2 A ch mein Auserwählter, ach du Sohn meines Leibes, ach mein gewünschter Sohn,

What, my son? What, son who came from within me? What, son of my promises?

3 l aß nicht den Weibern deine Kraft und gehe die Wege nicht, darin sich die Könige verderben!

Do not give your strength to women, or your ways to that which destroys kings.

4 O , nicht den Königen, Lamuel, nicht den Königen ziemt es, Wein zu trinken, noch den Fürsten starkes Getränk!

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to desire strong drink.

5 S ie möchten trinken und der Rechte vergessen und verändern die Sache aller elenden Leute.

Or they might drink and forget the law, and go against the rights of all who are suffering.

6 G ebt starkes Getränk denen, die am Umkommen sind, und den Wein den betrübten Seelen,

Give strong drink to him who is about to die, and wine to him whose life is full of trouble.

7 d aß sie trinken und ihres Elends vergessen und ihres Unglücks nicht mehr gedenken.

Let him drink and forget how poor he is, and remember his trouble no more.

8 T ue deinen Mund auf für die Stummen und für die Sache aller, die verlassen sind.

Open your mouth for those who cannot speak, and for the rights of those who are left without help.

9 T ue deinen Mund auf und richte recht und räche den Elenden und Armen.

Open your mouth. Be right and fair in what you decide. Stand up for the rights of those who are suffering and in need.

10 W em ein tugendsam Weib beschert ist, die ist viel edler denn die köstlichsten Perlen.

Who can find a good wife? For she is worth far more than rubies that make one rich.

11 I hres Mannes Herz darf sich auf sie verlassen, und Nahrung wird ihm nicht mangeln.

The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will never stop getting good things.

12 S ie tut ihm Liebes und kein Leides ihr Leben lang.

She does him good and not bad all the days of her life.

13 S ie geht mit Wolle und Flachs um und arbeitet gern mit ihren Händen.

She looks for wool and flax, and works with willing hands.

14 S ie ist wie ein Kaufmannsschiff, das seine Nahrung von ferne bringt.

She is like ships that trade. She brings her food from far away.

15 S ie steht vor Tages auf und gibt Speise ihrem Hause und Essen ihren Dirnen.

She rises while it is still night and makes food for all those in her house. She gives work for the young women to do.

16 S ie denkt nach einem Acker und kauft ihn und pflanzt einen Weinberg von den Früchten ihrer Hände.

She gives careful thought to a field and buys it. She plants grape-vines from what she has earned.

17 S ie gürtet ihre Lenden mit Kraft und stärkt ihre Arme.

She makes herself ready with strength, and makes her arms strong.

18 S ie merkt, wie ihr Handel Frommen bringt; ihre Leuchte verlischt des Nachts nicht.

She sees that what she has earned is good. Her lamp does not go out at night.

19 S ie streckt ihre Hand nach dem Rocken, und ihre Finger fassen die Spindel.

She puts her hands to the wheel to make cloth.

20 S ie breitet ihre Hände aus zu dem Armen und reicht ihre Hand dem Dürftigen.

She opens her hand to the poor, and holds out her hands to those in need.

21 S ie fürchtet für ihr Haus nicht den Schnee; denn ihr ganzes Haus hat zwiefache Kleider.

She is not afraid of the snow for those in her house, for all of them are dressed in red.

22 S ie macht sich selbst Decken; feine Leinwand und Purpur ist ihr Kleid.

She makes coverings for herself. Her clothes are linen cloth and purple.

23 I hr Mann ist bekannt in den Toren, wenn er sitzt bei den Ältesten des Landes.

Her husband is known in the gates, when he sits among the leaders of the land.

24 S ie macht einen Rock und verkauft ihn; einen Gürtel gibt sie dem Krämer.

She makes linen clothes and sells them. She brings belts to those who trade.

25 K raft und Schöne sind ihr Gewand, und sie lacht des kommenden Tages.

Her clothes are strength and honor. She is full of joy about the future.

26 S ie tut ihren Mund auf mit Weisheit, und auf ihrer Zunge ist holdselige Lehre.

She opens her mouth with wisdom. The teaching of kindness is on her tongue.

27 S ie schaut, wie es in ihrem Hause zugeht, und ißt ihr Brot nicht mit Faulheit.

She looks well to the ways of those in her house, and does not eat the bread of doing nothing.

28 I hre Söhne stehen auf und preisen sie selig; ihr Mann lobt sie:

Her children rise up and honor her. Her husband does also, and he praises her, saying:

29 " Viele Töchter halten sich tugendsam; du aber übertriffst sie alle."

“Many daughters have done well, but you have done better than all of them.”

30 L ieblich und schön sein ist nichts; ein Weib, das den HERRN fürchtet, soll man loben.

Pleasing ways lie and beauty comes to nothing, but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised.

31 S ie wird gerühmt werden von den Früchten ihrer Hände, und ihre Werke werden sie loben in den Toren.

Give her the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.
