1 L iebe Brüder, haltet nicht dafür, daß der Glaube an Jesum Christum, unsern HERRN der Herrlichkeit, Ansehung der Person leide.

My Christian brothers, our Lord Jesus Christ is the Lord of shining-greatness. Since your trust is in Him, do not look on one person as more important than another.

2 D enn so in eure Versammlung käme ein Mann mit einem goldenen Ringe und mit einem herrlichen Kleide, es käme aber auch ein Armer in einem unsauberen Kleide,

What if a man comes into your church wearing a gold ring and good clothes? And at the same time a poor man comes wearing old clothes.

3 u nd ihr sähet auf den, der das herrliche Kleid trägt, und sprächet zu ihm: Setze du dich her aufs beste! und sprächet zu dem Armen: Stehe du dort! oder setze dich her zu meinen Füßen!

What if you show respect to the man in good clothes and say, “Come and sit in this good place”? But if you say to the poor man, “Stand up over there,” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,”

4 i st's recht, daß ihr solchen Unterschied bei euch selbst macht und richtet nach argen Gedanken?

are you not thinking that one is more important than the other? This kind of thinking is sinful.

5 H öret zu, meine lieben Brüder! Hat nicht Gott erwählt die Armen auf dieser Welt, die am Glauben reich sind und Erben des Reichs, welches er verheißen hat denen, die ihn liebhaben?

Listen, my dear Christian brothers, God has chosen those who are poor in the things of this world to be rich in faith. The holy nation of heaven is theirs. That is what God promised to those who love Him.

6 I hr aber habt dem Armen Unehre getan. Sind nicht die Reichen die, die Gewalt an euch üben und ziehen euch vor Gericht?

You have not shown respect to the poor man. Is it not the rich men who make it hard for you and take you to court?

7 V erlästern sie nicht den guten Namen, nach dem ihr genannt seid?

They speak against the name of Christ. And it was Christ Who called you.

8 S o ihr das königliche Gesetz erfüllet nach der Schrift: "Liebe deinen Nächsten wie dich selbst," so tut ihr wohl;

You do well when you obey the Holy Writings which say, “You must love your neighbor as you love yourself.”

9 s o ihr aber die Person ansehet, tut ihr Sünde und werdet überführt vom Gesetz als Übertreter.

But if you look on one man as more important than another, you are sinning. And the Law says you are sinning. Keep the Whole Law

10 D enn so jemand das ganze Gesetz hält und sündigt an einem, der ist's ganz schuldig.

If you obey all the Laws but one, you are as guilty as the one who has broken them all.

11 D enn der da gesagt hat: "Du sollst nicht ehebrechen," der hat auch gesagt: "Du sollst nicht töten." So du nun nicht ehebrichst, tötest aber, bist du ein Übertreter des Gesetzes.

The One Who said, “You must not do any sex sins,” also said, “You must not kill another person.” If you do no sex sins but kill someone, you are guilty of breaking the Law.

12 A lso redet und also tut, als die da sollen durchs Gesetz der Freiheit gerichtet werden.

Keep on talking and acting as people who will be told they are guilty or not by the Law that makes men free.

13 E s wird aber ein unbarmherziges Gericht über den ergehen, der nicht Barmherzigkeit getan hat; und die Barmherzigkeit rühmt sich wider das Gericht.

Anyone who shows no loving-kindness will have no loving-kindness shown to him when he is told he is guilty. But if you show loving-kindness, God will show loving-kindness to you when you are told you are guilty. Faith Without Works Is Dead

14 W as hilfst, liebe Brüder, so jemand sagt, er habe den Glauben, und hat doch die Werke nicht? Kann auch der Glaube ihn selig machen?

My Christian brothers, what good does it do if you say you have faith but do not do things that prove you have faith? Can that kind of faith save you from the punishment of sin?

15 S o aber ein Bruder oder eine Schwester bloß wäre und Mangel hätte der täglichen Nahrung,

What if a Christian does not have clothes or food?

16 u nd jemand unter euch spräche zu ihnen: Gott berate euch, wärmet euch und sättiget euch! ihr gäbet ihnen aber nicht, was des Leibes Notdurft ist: was hülfe ihnen das?

And one of you says to him, “Goodbye, keep yourself warm and eat well.” But if you do not give him what he needs, how does that help him?

17 A lso auch der Glaube, wenn er nicht Werke hat, ist er tot an ihm selber.

A faith that does not do things is a dead faith.

18 A ber es möchte jemand sagen: Du hast den Glauben, und ich habe die Werke; zeige mir deinen Glauben ohne die Werke, so will ich dir meinen Glauben zeigen aus meinen Werken.

Someone may say, “You have faith, and I do things. Prove to me you have faith when you are doing nothing. I will prove to you I have faith by doing things.”

19 D u glaubst, daß ein einiger Gott ist? Du tust wohl daran; die Teufel glauben's auch und zittern.

You believe there is one God. That is good! But even the demons believe that, and because they do, they shake.

20 W illst du aber erkennen, du eitler Mensch, daß der Glaube ohne Werke tot sei?

You foolish man! Do I have to prove to you that faith without doing things is of no use?

21 I st nicht Abraham, unser Vater, durch die Werke gerecht geworden, da er seinen Sohn Isaak auf dem Altar opferte?

Was not our early father Abraham right with God by what he did? He obeyed God and put his son Isaac on the altar to die.

22 D a siehst du, daß der Glaube mitgewirkt hat an seinen Werken, und durch die Werke ist der Glaube vollkommen geworden;

You see his faith working by what he did and his faith was made perfect by what he did.

23 u nd ist die Schrift erfüllt, die da spricht: "Abraham hat Gott geglaubt, und das ist ihm zur Gerechtigkeit gerechnet," und er ward ein Freund Gottes geheißen.

It happened as the Holy Writings said it would happen. They say, “Abraham put his trust in God and he became right with God.” He was called the friend of God.

24 S o sehet ihr nun, daß der Mensch durch die Werke gerecht wird, nicht durch den Glauben allein.

A man becomes right with God by what he does and not by faith only.

25 D esgleichen die Hure Rahab, ist sie nicht durch die Werke gerecht geworden, da sie die Boten aufnahm und ließ sie einen andern Weg hinaus?

The same was true with Rahab, the woman who sold the use of her body. She became right with God by what she did in helping the men who had been sent to look through the country and sent them away by another road.

26 D enn gleichwie der Leib ohne Geist tot ist, also ist auch der Glaube ohne Werke tot.

The body is dead when there is no spirit in it. It is the same with faith. Faith is dead when nothing is done.
