1 A lso war die Lade des HERRN sieben Monate im Lande der Philister.

The special box of the Lord had been in the country of the Philistines seven months.

2 U nd die Philister riefen ihre Priester und Weissager und sprachen: Was sollen wir mit der Lade des HERRN machen? Lehrt uns, womit sollen wir sie an ihren Ort senden?

The Philistines called for the religious leaders and those who were wise in secret ways, saying, “What should we do with the special box of the Lord? Tell us how we should send it to its place.”

3 S ie sprachen: Wollt ihr die Lade des Gottes Israels senden, so sendet sie nicht leer, sondern sollt ihm vergelten ein Schuldopfer; so werdet ihr gesund werden und wird euch kund werden, warum seine Hand nicht von euch läßt.

And they said, “If you send away the special box of the God of Israel, do not send it empty. But be sure to return to Him a sin gift. Then you will be healed, and it will be known to you why His hand does not turn away from you.”

4 S ie aber sprachen: Welches ist das Schuldopfer, das wir ihm geben sollen? Sie antworteten: Fünf goldene Beulen und fünf goldene Mäuse nach der Zahl der fünf Fürsten der Philister; denn es ist einerlei Plage gewesen über euch alle und über eure Fürsten.

Then they said, “What should we return to Him for a sin gift?” And they said, “Five sores made of gold and five gold mice, as many as there are Philistine leaders. For the same trouble was upon all of you and on your leaders.

5 S o müßt ihr nun machen Bilder eurer Beulen und eurer Mäuse, die euer Land verderbt haben, daß ihr dem Gott Israels die Ehre gebt; vielleicht wird seine Hand leichter werden über euch und über euren Gott und über euer Land.

So make objects to look like your sores and your mice that destroyed the land, and you will give honor to the God of Israel. It may be that He will be easier on you, your gods, and your land.

6 W arum verstockt ihr euer Herz, wie die Ägypter und Pharao ihr Herz verstockten? Ist's nicht also: da er seine Macht an ihnen bewies, ließen sie sie fahren, daß sie hingingen?

Why do you make your hearts hard as the Egyptians and Pharaoh made their hearts hard? Do not forget how the God of Israel made it hard for them. And did they not let the people go?

7 S o nehmet nun und machet einen neuen Wagen und zwei junge, säugende Kühe, auf die noch nie ein Joch gekommen ist, und spannt sie an den Wagen und laßt ihre Kälber hinter ihnen daheim bleiben.

So now take and make ready a new wagon and two milk cows that have never pulled a load. Tie the cows to the wagon and take their calves away from them.

8 U nd nehmet die Lade des HERRN und legt sie auf den Wagen; und die goldenen Kleinode, die ihr ihm zum Schuldopfer gebet, tut in ein Kästlein neben ihre Seite. Und sendet sie hin und laßt sie gehen.

Take the special box of the Lord and put it on the wagon. Put the objects of gold which you return to Him as a sin gift in a box by its side. Then send it away, and let it be gone.

9 U nd sehet zu: geht sie hin auf dem Weg ihrer Grenze gen Beth-Semes, so hat er uns all das große Übel getan; wo nicht, so werden wir wissen, daß sein Hand uns nicht gerührt hat, sondern es ist uns ungefähr widerfahren.

And watch. If it goes on the way to its own land, to Bethshemesh, then He has done this very bad thing to us. But if not, then we will know that it was not His hand that destroyed us. It will have just happened for no reason.”

10 D ie Leute taten also und nahmen zwei junge, säugende Kühe und spannten sie an den Wagen und behielten ihre Kälber daheim

The men did so. They took two milk cows and tied them to the wagon, and shut up their calves at home.

11 u nd legten die Lade des HERR auf den Wagen und das Kästlein mit den goldenen Mäusen und mit den Bildern ihrer Beulen.

They put the special box of the Lord on the wagon, and the box with the gold mice and the objects made to look like their sores.

12 U nd die Kühe gingen geradewegs auf Beth-Semes zu auf einer Straße und gingen und blökten und wichen nicht weder zur Rechten noch zur Linken; und die Fürsten der Philister gingen ihnen nach bis an die Grenze von Beth-Semes.

And the cows went straight toward Bethshemesh. They went along the straight road, making a sound as they went. They did not turn aside to the right or to the left. And the leaders of the Philistines followed them to the outside of Bethshemesh.

13 D ie Beth-Semiter aber schnitten eben in der Weizenernte im Grund, und hoben ihre Augen auf und sahen die Lade und freuten sich, sie zu sehen.

Now the people of Bethshemesh were gathering their grain in the valley. They looked up and saw the special box of the Lord, and were glad to see it.

14 D er Wagen aber kam auf den Acker Josuas, des Beth-Semiters, und stand daselbst still. Und war ein großer Stein daselbst. Und sie spalteten das Holz vom Wagen und opferten die Kühe dem HERRN zum Brandopfer.

The wagon came into the field of Joshua the Bethshemite and stopped there by a big stone. They cut the wood of the wagon into pieces and gave the cows as a burnt gift to the Lord.

15 D ie Leviten aber hoben die Lade des HERRN herab und das Kästlein, das obendran war, darin die goldenen Kleinode waren, und setzten sie auf den großen Stein. Aber die Leute zu Beth-Semes opferten dem HERRN desselben Tages Brandopfer und andere Opfer.

The Levites took down the special box of the Lord and the box that was with it that had the objects of gold, and put them on the big stone. The men of Bethshemesh gave burnt gifts in worship that day to the Lord.

16 D a aber die fünf Fürsten der Philister zugesehen hatten, zogen sie wiederum gen Ekron desselben Tages.

When the five leaders of the Philistines saw it, they returned that day to Ekron.

17 D ies sind aber die goldenen Beulen, die die Philister dem HERRN zum Schuldopfer gaben: Sadod eine, Gaza eine, Askalon eine, Gath eine und Ekron eine;

These are the sores made of gold which the Philistines returned for a sin gift to the Lord. There was one each for Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron.

18 u nd die goldenen Mäuse nach der Zahl aller Städte der Philister unter den fünf Fürsten, der gemauerten Städte und der Dörfer. Und Zeuge ist der große Stein, darauf sie die Lade des HERRN ließen, bis auf diesen Tag auf dem Acker Josuas, des Beth-Semiters.

And the gold mice were as many as the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five leaders, both cities with walls and country towns. The big stone where they set the special box of the Lord is there in the field of Joshua the Bethshemite to this day.

19 U nd etliche zu Beth-Semes wurden geschlagen, darum daß sie die Lade des HERRN angesehen hatten. Und er schlug des Volks siebzig Mann (fünfzigtausendund siebzig). Da trug das Volk Leid, daß der HERR so eine große Schlacht im Volk getan hatte.

The Lord killed some of the men of Bethshemesh because they had looked into the special box of the Lord. He killed 70 (50, 070) men. And the people were filled with sorrow because the Lord had killed so many of them. The Special Box at Kiriath-jearim

20 U nd die Leute zu Beth-Semes sprachen: Wer kann stehen vor dem HERRN, solchem heiligen Gott? Und zu wem soll er von uns ziehen?

The men of Bethshemesh said, “Who is able to stand before the Lord, this holy God? To whom can we send Him?”

21 U nd sie sandten Boten zu den Bürgern Kirjath-Jearims und ließen ihnen sagen: Die Philister haben uns die Lade des HERRN wiedergebracht; kommt herab und holt sie zu euch hinauf.

So they sent men to the people living in Kiriath-jearim, saying, “The Philistines have returned the special box of the Lord. Come down and get it.”
