1 T herefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John

Jesus knew the proud religious law-keepers had heard He was making and baptizing more followers than John.

2 ( though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples),

Jesus did not baptize anyone Himself but His followers did.

3 H e left Judea and departed again to Galilee.

Then Jesus went from the country of Judea to the country of Galilee.

4 B ut He needed to go through Samaria.

He had to go through the country of Samaria.

5 S o He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

So He came to a town in Samaria called Sycar. It was near the piece of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

6 N ow Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.

Jacob’s well was there. Jesus was tired from traveling so He sat down just as He was by the well. It was about noon.

7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”

A woman of Samaria came to get water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”

8 F or His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

His followers had gone to the town to buy food.

9 T hen the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

The woman of Samaria said to Him, “You are a Jew. I am of Samaria. Why do You ask me for a drink when the Jews have nothing to do with the people of Samaria?”

10 J esus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

Jesus said to her, “You do not know what God has to give. You do not know Who said to you, ‘Give Me a drink.’ If you knew, you would have asked Him. He would have given you living water.”

11 T he woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water?

The woman said to Him, “Sir, the well is deep. You have nothing to get water with. Where will You get the living water?

12 A re You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?”

Are You greater than our early father Jacob? He gave us the well. He and his children and his cattle drank from it.” Jesus Tells of the Living Water

13 J esus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again,

Jesus said to her, “Whoever drinks this water will be thirsty again.

14 b ut whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

Whoever drinks the water that I will give him will never be thirsty. The water that I will give him will become in him a well of life that lasts forever.”

15 T he woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”

The woman said, “Sir, give me this water so I will never be thirsty. Then I will not have to come all this way for water.” The True Kind of Worship

16 J esus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”

Jesus said to her, “Go call your husband and come back.”

17 T he woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’

The woman said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said, “You told the truth when you said, ‘I have no husband.’

18 f or you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”

You have had five husbands. The one you have now is not your husband. You told the truth.”

19 T he woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.

The woman said to Him, “Sir, I think You are a person Who speaks for God.

20 O ur fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”

Our early fathers worshiped on this mountain. You Jews say Jerusalem is the place where men should worship.”

21 J esus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father.

Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me. The time is coming when you will not worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem.

22 Y ou worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews.

You people do not know what you worship. We Jews know what we worship. It is through the Jews that men are saved from the punishment of their sins.

23 B ut the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.

The time is coming, yes, it is here now, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father wants that kind of worshipers.

24 G od is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

God is Spirit. Those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.” Jesus Is the One the Jews Are Looking For

25 T he woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.”

The woman said to Him, “I know the Jews are looking for One Who is coming. He is called the Christ. When He comes, He will tell us everything.”

26 J esus said to her, “I who speak to you am He. ” The Whitened Harvest

Jesus said to her, “I am the Christ, the One talking with you!”

27 A nd at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why are You talking with her?”

Right then the followers came back and were surprised and wondered about finding Him talking with a woman. But no one said, “What do You want?” or, “Why are You talking with her?”

28 T he woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men,

The woman left her water jar and went into the town. She said to the men,

29 Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”

“Come and see a Man Who told me everything I ever did! Can this be the Christ?”

30 T hen they went out of the city and came to Him.

They went out of town and came to Him. Jesus Tells Them of a New Kind of Food

31 I n the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”

During this time His followers were saying to Him, “Teacher, eat something.”

32 B ut He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.”

He said, “I have food to eat that you do not know of.”

33 T herefore the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?”

The followers said to each other, “Has someone taken food to Him?”

34 J esus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.

Jesus said, “My food is to do what God wants Me to do and to finish His work.

35 D o you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!

Do you not say, ‘It is four months yet until the time to gather grain’? Listen! I say to you, open your eyes and look at the fields. They are white now and waiting for the grain to be gathered in.

36 A nd he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.

The one who gathers gets his pay. He gathers fruit that lasts forever. The one who plants and the one who gathers will have joy together.

37 F or in this the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’

These words are true, ‘One man plants and another man gathers.’

38 I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.” The Savior of the World

I sent you to gather where you have not planted. Others have planted and you have come along to gather in their fruit.” The People of Samaria Believe in Jesus

39 A nd many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.”

Many people in that town of Samaria believed in Jesus because of what the woman said about Him. She said, “He told me everything I ever did.”

40 S o when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days.

So the people of Samaria came to Him. They asked Him to stay with them. Jesus stayed there two days.

41 A nd many more believed because of His own word.

Many more people believed because of what He said.

42 T hen they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.” Welcome at Galilee

They said to the woman, “Now we believe! It is no longer because of what you said about Jesus but we have heard Him ourselves. We know, for sure, that He is the Christ, the One Who saves men of this world from the punishment of their sins.” Jesus Goes to Galilee

43 N ow after the two days He departed from there and went to Galilee.

Two days later He went from there and came to the country of Galilee.

44 F or Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.

Jesus Himself said that no one who speaks for God is respected in his own country.

45 S o when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all the things He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they also had gone to the feast. A Nobleman’s Son Healed

When He came to Galilee, the people there were glad. They had seen all the things He did in Jerusalem. It was at the time of the special religious gathering to remember how the Jews left Egypt. They had been there also. Jesus Heals the Dying Boy in Capernaum

46 S o Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum.

Jesus came again to the town of Cana of Galilee where He had made water into wine. A man who worked with the king had a son who was sick in the city of Capernaum.

47 W hen he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and implored Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.

This man went to Jesus. He had heard that Jesus had come from the country of Judea to Galilee. The man asked Jesus if He would go to Capernaum and heal his son who was dying.

48 T hen Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.”

Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you see special things and powerful works done, you will not believe.”

49 T he nobleman said to Him, “Sir, come down before my child dies!”

The man said to Him, “Sir, come with me before my son dies.”

50 J esus said to him, “Go your way; your son lives.” So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way.

Jesus said to him, “Go your way. Your son will live.” The man put his trust in what Jesus said and left.

51 A nd as he was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, “Your son lives!”

As he was on his way home, his servants met him. They said to him, “Your son is living!”

52 T hen he inquired of them the hour when he got better. And they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”

He asked them what time his boy began to get well. They said to him, “Yesterday at one o’clock the sickness left.”

53 S o the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and his whole household.

The father knew it was the time Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” He and everyone in his house put their trust in Jesus.

54 T his again is the second sign Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.

This was the second powerful work that Jesus did after He came from the country of Judea to the country of Galilee.
