1 N ow the children of Israel after their number, the heads of fathers’ households and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and their officers who served the king, in any matter of the divisions which came in and went out month by month throughout all the months of the year—of every division were twenty-four thousand.
These were the sons of Israel, the heads of fathers’ houses. They were the leaders of thousands and of hundreds. These were the captains who worked for the king in anything to do with the armies which came in and went out every month of the year. There were 24, 000 men in each army.
2 O ver the first division for the first month was Jashobeam the son of Zabdiel: and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
Jashobeam the son of Zabdiel was the leader of the first army for the first month. There were 24, 000 in his army.
3 H e was of the children of Perez, the chief of all the captains of the army for the first month.
He was a son of Perez, and head of all the captains of the army for the first month.
4 O ver the division of the second month was Dodai the Ahohite, and his division; and Mikloth the ruler: and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
Dodai the Ahohite was the leader of the army for the second month. Mikloth was the head captain. There were 24, 000 in his army.
5 T he third captain of the army for the third month was Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada the priest, chief: and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
The third leader of the army for the third month was Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada the religious leader. There were 24, 000 in his army.
6 T his is that Benaiah who was the mighty man of the thirty, and over the thirty: and of his division was Ammizabad his son.
This is the Benaiah who was the strong man of the thirty, and leader of the thirty. Ammizabad his son was captain of his army.
7 T he fourth captain for the fourth month was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him: and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
The fourth leader for the fourth month was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him. There were 24, 000 in his army.
8 T he fifth captain for this fifth month was Shamhuth the Izrahite: and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

9 T he sixth captain for the sixth month was Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite: and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

10 T he seventh captain for the seventh month was Helez the Pelonite, of the children of Ephraim: and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

11 T he eighth captain for the eighth month was Sibbecai the Hushathite, of the Zerahites: and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

12 T he ninth captain for the ninth month was Abiezer the Anathothite, of the Benjamites: and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

13 T he tenth captain for the tenth month was Maharai the Netophathite, of the Zerahites: and in his division were Twenty-four thousand.

14 T he eleventh captain for the eleventh month was Benaiah the Pirathonite, of the children of Ephraim: and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

15 T he twelfth captain for the twelfth month was Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel: and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

16 F urthermore over the tribes of Israel: of the Reubenites was Eliezer the son of Zichri the ruler; of the Simeonites, Shephatiah the son of Maacah;

17 o f Levi, Hashabiah the son of Kemuel; of Aaron, Zadok;
Hashabiah the son of Kemuel led the sons of Levi; Zadok led the sons of Aaron.
18 o f Judah, Elihu, one of the brothers of David; of Issachar, Omri the son of Michael;
Elihu, one of David’s brothers, led the sons of Judah; Omri the son of Michael led the sons of Issachar;
19 o f Zebulun, Ishmaiah the son of Obadiah; of Naphtali, Jeremoth the son of Azriel;
Ishmaiah the son of Obadiah led the sons of Zebulun; Jeremoth the son of Azriel led the sons of Naphtali;
20 o f the children of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Azaziah; of the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joel the son of Pedaiah;
Hoshea the son of Azaziah led the sons of Ephraim; Joel the son of Pedaiah led the half-family group of Manasseh;
21 o f the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo the son of Zechariah; of Benjamin, Jaasiel the son of Abner;
Iddo the son of Zechariah led the half-family group of Manasseh in Gilead; Jaasiel the son of Abner led the sons of Benjamin;
22 o f Dan, Azarel the son of Jeroham. These were the captains of the tribes of Israel.
And Azarel the son of Jeroham led the sons of Dan. These were the leaders of the families of Israel.
23 B ut David didn’t take the number of them from twenty years old and under, because Yahweh had said he would increase Israel like the stars of the sky.
But David did not number those younger than twenty years old because the Lord had promised to make Israel many, as the stars of heaven.
24 J oab the son of Zeruiah began to take a census, but didn’t finish; and wrath came on Israel for this. The number wasn’t put into the account in the chronicles of king David.
Joab the son of Zeruiah had begun to number them, but did not finish. Anger came upon Israel because of this. So the number was not put into the book of the chronicles of King David.
25 O ver the king’s treasures was Azmaveth the son of Adiel: and over the treasures in the fields, in the cities, and in the villages, and in the towers, was Jonathan the son of Uzziah;
Azmaveth the son of Adiel was over the king’s store-houses. Jonathan the son of Uzziah was over the store-houses in the country, in the cities, in the towns, and in the towers.
26 O ver those who did the work of the field for tillage of the ground was Ezri the son of Chelub;
Ezri the son of Chelub was over those who worked in the fields, plowing and planting.
27 a nd over the vineyards was Shimei the Ramathite; and over the increase of the vineyards for the wine cellars was Zabdi the Shiphmite;
Shimei the Ramathite was over the grape-fields. Zabdi the Shiphmite was over the fruit of the grape-fields for the wine.
28 a nd over the olive trees and the sycamore trees that were in the lowland was Baal Hanan the Gederite; and over the cellars of oil was Joash;
Baalhanan the Gederite was over the olive and sycamore trees in the plains. Joash was captain of the stores of oil.
29 a nd over the herds that fed in Sharon was Shitrai the Sharonite; and over the herds that were in the valleys was Shaphat the son of Adlai;
Shitrai the Sharonite was over the cattle which were eating in the fields of Sharon. Shaphat the son of Adlai was over the cattle in the valleys.
30 a nd over the camels was Obil the Ishmaelite; and over the donkeys was Jehdeiah the Meronothite; and over the flocks was Jaziz the Hagrite.
Obil the Ishmaelite was over the camels. Jehdeiah the Meronothite was over the donkeys.
31 A ll these were the rulers of the property which was king David’s.
And Jaziz the Hagrite was over the flocks. All these were over all that belonged to King David.
32 A lso Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a man of understanding, and a scribe; and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni was with the king’s sons.
Jonathan, the brother of David’s father, used much wisdom talking with people. And he was a writer. Jehiel the son of Hachmoni taught the king’s sons.
33 A hithophel was the king’s counselor: and Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend.
Ahithophel talked about problems with the king. Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend.
34 A fter Ahithophel was Jehoiada the son of Benaiah, and Abiathar. Joab was the captain of the king’s army.
Jehoiada the son of Benaiah, and Abaiathar, talked with the king after Ahithophel. And Joab was the captain of the king’s army.
