1 T his is the list of the Israelites, the heads of fathers’ houses, the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and their officers who served the king in all matters of the divisions that came and went, month by month throughout the year, each division numbering 24, 000.
These were the sons of Israel, the heads of fathers’ houses. They were the leaders of thousands and of hundreds. These were the captains who worked for the king in anything to do with the armies which came in and went out every month of the year. There were 24, 000 men in each army.
2 O ver the first division for the first month was Jashobeam son of Zabdiel. In his division were 24, 000.
Jashobeam the son of Zabdiel was the leader of the first army for the first month. There were 24, 000 in his army.
3 H e was descended from Perez and was chief of all the commanders of the army for the first month.
He was a son of Perez, and head of all the captains of the army for the first month.
4 O ver the division for the second month was Dodai the Ahohite; and of his division Mikloth was the chief officer. In his division were 24, 000.
Dodai the Ahohite was the leader of the army for the second month. Mikloth was the head captain. There were 24, 000 in his army.
5 T he third commander of the army for the third month was Benaiah son of Jehoiada the priest, as chief. In his division were 24, 000.
The third leader of the army for the third month was Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada the religious leader. There were 24, 000 in his army.
6 T his is the Benaiah who was a mighty man of the Thirty and over the Thirty; and in his division was Ammizabad his son.
This is the Benaiah who was the strong man of the thirty, and leader of the thirty. Ammizabad his son was captain of his army.
7 T he fourth, for the fourth month, Asahel brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him. In his division were 24, 000.
The fourth leader for the fourth month was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him. There were 24, 000 in his army.
8 T he fifth, for the fifth month, Shamhuth the Izrahite. In his division were 24, 000.
The fifth leader for the fifth month was Shamhuth the Izrahite. There were 24, 000 in his army.
9 T he sixth, for the sixth month, Ira son of Ikkesh the Tekoite. In his division were 24, 000.
The sixth for the sixth month was Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite. There were 24, 000 in his army.
10 T he seventh, for the seventh month, Helez the Pelonite, of the Ephraimites. In his division were 24, 000.

11 T he eighth, for the eighth month, Sibbecai the Hushathite, of the Zarahites. In his division were 24, 000.

12 T he ninth, for the ninth month, Abiezer of Anathoth, a Benjamite. In his division were 24, 000.

13 T he tenth, for the tenth month, Maharai from Netophah, of the Zerahites. In his division were 24, 000.

14 T he eleventh, for the eleventh month, Benaiah the Pirathonite, of the sons of Ephraim. In his division were 24, 000.

15 T he twelfth, for the twelfth month, Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel. In his division were 24, 000.

17 O f Levi: Hashabiah son of Kemuel; of Aaron: Zadok;

18 O f Judah: Elihu, one of David’s brothers; of Issachar: Omri son of Michael;

19 O f Zebulun: Ishmaiah son of Obadiah; of Naphtali: Jerimoth son of Azriel;

20 O f the Ephraimites: Hoshea son of Azaziah; of the half-tribe of Manasseh: Joel son of Pedaiah;

21 O f the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead: Iddo son of Zechariah; of Benjamin: Jaasiel son of Abner;
Iddo the son of Zechariah led the half-family group of Manasseh in Gilead; Jaasiel the son of Abner led the sons of Benjamin;
22 O f Dan: Azarel son of Jeroham. These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel.
And Azarel the son of Jeroham led the sons of Dan. These were the leaders of the families of Israel.
23 B ut David did not number those under twenty years of age, for the Lord had promised to make Israel as the stars of the heavens.
But David did not number those younger than twenty years old because the Lord had promised to make Israel many, as the stars of heaven.
24 J oab son of Zeruiah began a census but did not finish, because the census brought wrath upon Israel, and the number was not recorded in the chronicles of King David.
Joab the son of Zeruiah had begun to number them, but did not finish. Anger came upon Israel because of this. So the number was not put into the book of the chronicles of King David.
25 O ver the king’s treasuries was Azmaveth son of Adiel; and over the treasuries in the country, cities, villages, and towers or forts was Jonathan son of Uzziah;
Azmaveth the son of Adiel was over the king’s store-houses. Jonathan the son of Uzziah was over the store-houses in the country, in the cities, in the towns, and in the towers.
26 O ver those who did the work of the field of tilling the soil was Ezri son of Chelub;
Ezri the son of Chelub was over those who worked in the fields, plowing and planting.
27 O ver the vineyards was Shimei the Ramathite; over the produce of the vineyards for the wine cellars, Zabdi the Shiphmite;
Shimei the Ramathite was over the grape-fields. Zabdi the Shiphmite was over the fruit of the grape-fields for the wine.
28 O ver the olive and sycamore trees in the low plains, Baal-hanan the Gederite; over the stores of oil, Joash;
Baalhanan the Gederite was over the olive and sycamore trees in the plains. Joash was captain of the stores of oil.
29 O ver the herds pasturing in Sharon, Shitrai the Sharonite; over the herds in the valleys, Shaphat son of Adlai;
Shitrai the Sharonite was over the cattle which were eating in the fields of Sharon. Shaphat the son of Adlai was over the cattle in the valleys.
30 O ver the camels, Obil the Ishmaelite; over the she-donkeys, Jehdeiah the Meronothite;
Obil the Ishmaelite was over the camels. Jehdeiah the Meronothite was over the donkeys.
31 A nd over the flocks, Jaziz the Hagrite. All these were stewards of King David’s property.
And Jaziz the Hagrite was over the flocks. All these were over all that belonged to King David.
32 A lso Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a wise man and a scribe; he and Jehiel son of Hachmoni attended the king’s sons.
Jonathan, the brother of David’s father, used much wisdom talking with people. And he was a writer. Jehiel the son of Hachmoni taught the king’s sons.
33 A hithophel was the king’s counselor; Hushai the Archite was the king’s companion and friend.
Ahithophel talked about problems with the king. Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend.
34 A hithophel was succeeded by Jehoiada son of Benaiah and by Abiathar. Joab was the commander of the king’s army.
Jehoiada the son of Benaiah, and Abaiathar, talked with the king after Ahithophel. And Joab was the captain of the king’s army.
