1 T hen the heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites came to Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the fathers’ houses of the Israelite tribes.

Then the family heads of the Levites came to Eleazar the religious leader, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the family groups of Israel.

2 T hey said to them at Shiloh in Canaan, The Lord commanded through Moses that we should be given cities to dwell in, with their pasturelands (suburbs) for our cattle.

They said to them at Shiloh in Canaan, “The Lord said through Moses to give us cities to live in, as well as fields around them for our cattle.”

3 S o the Israelites gave to the Levites out of their own inheritance, at the command of the Lord, these cities and their suburbs.

So the sons of Israel gave these cities and fields of their land to the Levites, as the Lord had said.

4 T he lot came out for the families of the Kohathites. So those Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest received by lot from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin thirteen cities.

The name drawn first was for the families of the Kohathites. The Levites who were children of Aaron the religious leader received thirteen cities from the families of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin.

5 A nd the rest of the Kohathites received by lot from the families of the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and the half-tribe of Manasseh ten cities.

The rest of the sons of Kohath by drawing names received ten cities from the families of Ephraim and Dan and the half-family group of Manasseh.

6 T he Gershonites received by lot from the families of the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan thirteen cities.

The sons of Gershon by drawing names received thirteen cities from the families of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali and the half-family group of Manasseh in Bashan.

7 T he Merarites received according to their families from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun twelve cities.

The sons of Merari received twelve cities from the families of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun.

8 T he Israelites gave by lot to the Levites these cities with their pasturelands (suburbs), as the Lord commanded through Moses.

The sons of Israel by drawing names gave these cities with their fields to the Levites, as the Lord had said through Moses.

9 T hey gave from the tribes of Judah and Simeon the cities here mentioned by name,

They gave from the families of Judah and Simeon the cities given here by name.

10 W hich went to the families of the descendants of Aaron, of the Kohathite branch of the Levites, for the lot fell to them first.

They were for the sons of Aaron, one of the families of the Kohathites, of the sons of Levi. For their name was drawn first.

11 T hey gave them Kiriath-arba, Arba being the father of Anak, which city is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with its pasturelands round about it.

They gave them Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) with the fields around it in the hill country of Judah. (Arba was the father of Anak.)

12 B ut the city’s fields and villages they gave to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his own.

But the city’s fields and towns had been given to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as his own.

13 T hus to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron, the city of refuge for the slayer, with its pasturelands (suburbs), and together with their suburbs, Libnah,

So to the sons of Aaron the religious leader they gave Hebron and Libnah with their fields. Hebron was the city where one who killed a man could go to be safe.

14 J attir, Eshtemoa,

And they gave them Jattir with its fields, Eshtemoa with its fields,

15 H olon, Debir,

Holon with its fields, Debir with its fields,

16 A in, Juttah, and Beth-shemesh; nine cities, each with its suburbs, out of those two tribes.

Ain with its fields, Juttah with its fields, and Bethshemesh with its fields. There were nine cities from these two family groups.

17 O ut of the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon, Geba,

From the family of Benjamin were given Gibeon with its fields, Geba with its fields,

18 A nathoth, and Almon; four cities, each with its suburbs.

Anathoth with its fields, and Almon with its fields, four cities.

19 T he cities of the sons of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen, with their suburbs.

For the sons of Aaron, the religious leaders, there were thirteen cities in all, with their fields.

20 T he rest of the Kohathites belonging to the Levitical families were allotted cities out of the tribe of Ephraim.

Then cities from the family of Ephraim were given to the rest of the families of the people of Kohath, the Levites.

21 T o them were given, each with its pasturelands (suburbs), Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, as the city of refuge for the slayer, and Gezer,

They gave them Shechem with its fields in the hill country of Ephraim. A man who killed another person could run to Shechem to be safe. And they gave them Gezer with its fields,

22 A nd Kibzaim, and Beth-horon; four cities, each with its pasturelands (suburbs).

Kibzaim with its fields, and Beth-horon with its fields, four cities.

23 A nd out of the tribe of Dan, each with its pasturelands (suburbs), Eltekeh, Gibbethon,

From the family of Dan were given Eletke with its fields, Gibbethon with its fields,

24 A ijalon, and Gath-rimmon; four cities, each with its pasturelands (suburbs).

Aijalon with its fields, and Gath-rimmon with its fields, four cities.

25 A nd out of the half-tribe of Manasseh, Taanach, and Gath-rimmon; two cities, each with its pasturelands (suburbs).

From the half-family group of Manasseh were given Taanach with its fields, and Gathrimmon with its fields, two cities.

26 A ll the cities for the families of the remaining Kohathites were ten, with their pasturelands (suburbs).

There were ten cities in all, with their fields, for the rest of the families of the Kohathites.

27 A nd to the Gershonites of the families of the Levites they gave out of the other half-tribe of Manasseh the city of Golan in Bashan, as the city of refuge for the slayer, and Be-eshterah; two cities, each with its pasturelands.

From the half-family group of Manasseh they gave Golan in Bashan and Be-eshterah and their fields to the sons of Gershon, one of the Levite families. A man who killed another person could run to Golan in Bashan to be safe. They were given two cities.

28 O ut of the tribe of Issachar, Kishion, Daberath,

From the family of Issachar were given Kishion with its fields, Daberath with its fields,

29 J armuth, and En-gannim; four cities, each with its suburbs.

Jarmuth with its fields, and Engannim with its fields, four cities.

30 O ut of the tribe of Asher, Mishal, Abdon,

From the family of Asher were given Mishal with its fields, Abdon with its fields,

31 H elkath, and Rehob; four cities, each with its pasturelands.

Helkath with its fields, and Rehob with its fields, four cities.

32 A nd out of the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee, city of refuge for the slayer, and Hammoth-dor, and Kartan; three cities, each with its suburbs.

From the family of Naphtali were given Kedesh in Galilee with its fields, Hammoth-dor with its fields, and Kartan with its fields, three cities. A man who killed another man could run to Kedesh to be safe.

33 A ll the cities of the Gershonite families were thirteen, with their pasturelands (suburbs).

The cities for the families of the Gershonites were thirteen in all, with their fields.

34 A nd to the families of the Merarites, the rest of the Levites, out of the tribe of Zebulun were given Jokneam, Kartah,

They gave cities to the families of the sons of Merari, the rest of the Levites, from the family of Zebulun. They gave them Jokneam with its fields, Kartah with its fields,

35 D imnah, and Nahalal; four cities, each with its pasturelands (suburbs).

Dimnah with its fields, and Nahalal with its fields, four cities.

36 A nd out of the tribe of Reuben, Bezer, Jahaz,

From the family of Reuben were given Bezer with its fields, Jahaz with its fields,

37 K edemoth, and Mephaath; four cities, each with its pasturelands (suburbs).

Kedemoth with its fields, and Mephaath with its fields, four cities.

38 A nd out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead, as the city of refuge for the slayer, and Mahanaim,

From the family of Gad was given Ramoth in Gilead with its fields. A man who killed another person could run to Ramoth in Gilead to be safe. And they gave them Mahanaim with its fields,

39 H eshbon, and Jazer; four cities in all, each with its pasturelands (suburbs).

Heshbon with its fields, and Jazer with its fields, four cities in all.

40 S o all the cities allotted to the Merarite families, that is, the remainder of the Levite families, were twelve cities.

There were twelve cities in all given to the families of the people of Merari, the rest of the families of the Levites.

41 T he cities of the Levites in the midst of the possession of the Israelites were forty-eight cities in all, with their pasturelands (suburbs).

The cities of the Levites among the land of the people of Israel were forty-eight cities in all, with their fields.

42 T hese cities all had their pasturelands (suburbs) around them.

Each one of these cities had its fields around it. So it was with all these cities.

43 A nd the Lord gave to Israel all the land which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they possessed it and dwelt in it.

The Lord gave Israel all the land He had promised to give to their fathers. They took it for their own, and lived in it.

44 T he Lord gave them rest round about, just as He had sworn to their fathers. Not one of all their enemies withstood them; the Lord delivered all their enemies into their hands.

The Lord gave them peace on every side, just as He had promised their fathers. Not one of all those who hated them could stand in front of them. The Lord gave all those who hated them into their hand.

45 T here failed no part of any good thing which the Lord had promised to the house of Israel; all came to pass.

Every good promise which the Lord had made to the people of Israel came true.
