1 H aving said these things, Jesus went out with His disciples beyond (across) the winter torrent of the Kidron. There was a garden there, which He and His disciples entered.
When Jesus had said these things, He went with His followers across the small river Kidron. He and His followers went to a garden there.
2 A nd Judas, who was betraying Him and delivering Him up, also knew the place, because Jesus had often retired there with His disciples.
Judas, who was handing Him over to the leaders, knew the place also. Jesus and His followers had met there many times.
3 S o Judas, obtaining and taking charge of the band of soldiers and some guards (attendants) of the high priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
Judas led some soldiers and some men who had been sent by the head religious leaders of the Jews and the proud religious law-keepers to the garden. They carried lamps and sticks that were burning and swords.
4 T hen Jesus, knowing all that was about to befall Him, went out to them and said, Whom are you seeking?
Jesus knew what was going to happen to Him. He went out and asked them, “Who are you looking for?”
5 T hey answered Him, Jesus the Nazarene. Jesus said to them, I am He. Judas, who was betraying Him, was also standing with them.
The soldiers answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said, “I am Jesus.” Judas, who was handing Him over, was with them also.
6 W hen Jesus said to them, I am He, they went backwards (drew back, lurched backward) and fell to the ground.
When He said to them, “I am Jesus,” they stepped back and fell to the ground.
7 T hen again He asked them, Whom are you seeking? And they said, Jesus the Nazarene.
He asked them again, “Who are you looking for?” They said again, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
8 J esus answered, I told you that I am He. So, if you want Me, let these men go their way.
He said, “I have told you that I am Jesus. If you are looking for Me, let these men go their way.”
9 T hus what He had said was fulfilled and verified, Of those whom You have given Me, I have not lost even one.
He said this so the words He spoke might happen, “I have not lost one of those You gave Me.”
10 T hen Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
Simon Peter had a sword. He took it and hit a servant who was owned by the head religious leader and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
11 T herefore, Jesus said to Peter, Put the sword into the sheath! The cup which My Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?
Then Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back where it belongs. Am I not to go through what My Father has given Me to go through?” Jesus Stands in Front of Annas
12 S o the troops and their captain and the guards (attendants) of the Jews seized Jesus and bound Him,
Then the soldiers and their captain and the men sent by the Jewish religious leaders took Jesus and tied Him.
13 A nd they brought Him first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year.
They took Him to Annas first. He was the father-in-law of Caiaphas. Caiaphas was the head religious leader that year.
14 I t was Caiaphas who had counseled the Jews that it was expedient and for their welfare that one man should die for (instead of, in behalf of) the people.
Caiaphas had talked to the Jews. He told them it would be a good thing if one man should die for the people. Peter Lies about Jesus
15 N ow Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. And that disciple was known to the high priest, and so he entered along with Jesus into the court of the palace of the high priest;
Simon Peter and another follower came behind Jesus. This other follower was known to the head religious leader. He went with Jesus to the head religious leader’s house.
16 B ut Peter was standing outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the maid who kept the door and brought Peter inside.
Peter stood outside at the gate. The other follower, who was known by the head religious leader, went out and talked to the servant-girl who watched the gate. Then he took Peter inside.
17 T hen the maid who was in charge at the door said to Peter, You are not also one of the disciples of this Man, are you? He said, I am not!
The servant-girl who watched the door said to Peter, “Are you not a follower of this Man?” He said, “I am not!”
18 N ow the servants and the guards (the attendants) had made a fire of coals, for it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. And Peter was with them, standing and warming himself.
The servants who were owned by someone and the soldiers had made a fire because it was cold. They were getting warm by the fire. Peter was standing with them getting warm. Jesus Stands in Front of Caiaphas
19 T hen the high priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and about His teaching.
The head religious leader of the Jews asked Jesus about His followers. He asked Jesus about His teaching.
20 J esus answered him, I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in a synagogue and in the temple, where the Jews congregate (assemble); and I have spoken nothing secretly.
Jesus said, “I have spoken very plain words to the world. I have always taught in the Jewish place of worship and in the house of God. It is where the Jews go all the time. My words have not been said in secret.
21 W hy do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard what I said to them. See! They know what I said.
Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard what I said to them. They know what I said.”
22 B ut when He said this, one of the attendants who stood by struck Jesus, saying, Is that how You answer the high priest?
Then one of the soldiers standing there hit Jesus with his hand. He said, “Is that how You talk to the head religious leaders?”
23 J esus replied, If I have said anything wrong tell what was wrong with it. But if I spoke rightly and properly, why do you strike Me?
Jesus said, “If I said anything wrong, tell Me what was wrong. If I said what was right, why did you hit Me?”
24 T hen Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Then Annas sent Jesus to Caiaphas, the head religious leader. Jesus was still tied up.
25 B ut Simon Peter was standing and was warming himself. They said to him, You are not also one of His disciples, are you? He denied it and said, I am not!
Simon Peter was standing there and getting warm. They said to him, “Are you not one of His followers also?” He lied and said he did not know Jesus and answered, “I am not!”
26 O ne of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter cut off, said, Did I not see you in the garden with Him?
A servant who was owned by the head religious leader was there. He was of the family of the man whose ear Peter cut off. The man said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?”
27 A nd again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed.
Again Peter lied and said he did not know Jesus. At once a rooster crowed. Jesus Stands in Front of Pilate
28 T hen they brought Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium (judgment hall, governor’s palace). And it was early. They themselves did not enter the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled (become ceremonially unclean), but might be fit to eat the Passover.
They led Jesus from Caiaphas into the court room. It was early in the morning. They did not go inside because their Law said if they did they would become dirty with sin. Then they would not be able to eat the religious supper to remember how the Jews left Egypt.
29 S o Pilate went out to them and said, What accusation do you bring against this Man?
So Pilate came out to them. He asked, “What have you to say against the Man?”
30 T hey retorted, If He were not an evildoer (criminal), we would not have handed Him over to you.
The Jews said, “If He had not done wrong, we would not have brought Him to you.”
31 P ilate said to them, Take Him yourselves and judge and sentence and punish Him according to your law. The Jews answered, It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.
Then Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and give Him a trial by your Law.” The Jews said to him, “It is against our Law to put anyone to death.”
32 T his was to fulfill the word which Jesus had spoken to show (indicate, predict) by what manner of death He was to die.
This happened as Jesus said it would happen. He had told what kind of death He would die.
33 S o Pilate went back again into the judgment hall and called Jesus and asked Him, Are You the King of the Jews?
Then Pilate went back into the court room. He called for Jesus and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
34 J esus replied, Are you saying this of yourself, or have others told you about Me?
Jesus said, “Do you ask Me this yourself, or did others say this to you about Me?”
35 P ilate answered, Am I a Jew? Your people and nation and their chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?
Pilate said, “Do you think I am a Jew? Your own people and religious leaders have handed You over to me. What have You done?”
36 J esus answered, My kingdom (kingship, royal power) belongs not to this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My followers would have been fighting to keep Me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, My kingdom is not from here (this world);.
Jesus said, “My holy nation does not belong to this world. If My holy nation were of this world, My helpers would fight so I would not be handed over to the Jews. My holy nation is not of this world.”
37 P ilate said to Him, Then You are a King? Jesus answered, You say it! For I am a King. This is why I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the Truth. Everyone who is of the Truth hears and listens to My voice.
Pilate said to Him, “So You are a King?” Jesus said, “You are right when you say that I am a King. I was born for this reason. I came into the world for this reason. I came to speak about the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” Jesus or Barabbas Is to Go Free
38 P ilate said to Him, What is Truth? On saying this he went out to the Jews again and told them, I find no fault in Him.
Pilate said to Jesus, “What is truth?” After Pilate said this, he went out again to the Jews. He said, “I do not find Him guilty.
39 B ut it is your custom that I release one for you at the Passover. So shall I release for you the King of the Jews?
But every year a man who is in prison is allowed to go free at the special religious gathering to remember how the Jews left Egypt. Do you want the King of the Jews to go free?”
40 T hen they all shouted back again, Not Him, but Barabbas! Now Barabbas was a robber.
Then they spoke with loud voices, “Not this Man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
