1 N ow on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been removed from (lifted out of the groove across the entrance of) the tomb.

It was the first day of the week. Mary Magdalene came to the grave early in the morning while it was still dark. She saw that the stone had been pushed away from the grave.

2 S o she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him!

She ran to Simon Peter and the other follower whom Jesus loved. She said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the grave. We do not know where they have put Him.”

3 U pon this, Peter and the other disciple came out and they went toward the tomb.

Then Peter and the other follower went to the grave.

4 A nd they came running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and arrived at the tomb first.

They ran but the other follower ran faster than Peter and came to the grave first.

5 A nd stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not enter.

He got down and looked in and saw the linen cloths but did not go in.

6 T hen Simon Peter came up, following him, and went into the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there;

Then Simon Peter came and went into the grave. He saw the linen cloths lying there.

7 B ut the burial napkin (kerchief) which had been around Jesus’ head, was not lying with the other linen cloths, but was rolled up (wrapped round and round) in a place by itself.

The white cloth that had been around the head of Jesus was not lying with the other linen cloths. It was rolled up and lying apart by itself.

8 T hen the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, went in too; and he saw and was convinced and believed.

Then the other follower, who had come first, went in also. He saw and believed.

9 F or as yet they did not know (understand) the statement of Scripture that He must rise again from the dead.

They still did not understand what the Holy Writings meant when they said that He must rise again from the dead.

10 T hen the disciples went back again to their homes (lodging places).

Then the followers went back again to their homes.

11 B ut Mary remained standing outside the tomb sobbing. As she wept, she stooped down into the tomb.

Mary stood outside the grave crying. As she cried, she got down and looked inside the grave.

12 A nd she saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.

She saw two angels dressed in white clothes. They were sitting where the body of Jesus had lain. One angel was where His head had lain and one angel was where His feet had lain.

13 A nd they said to her, Woman, why are you sobbing? She told them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.

They said to her, “Woman, why are you crying?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord. I do not know where they have put Him.”

14 O n saying this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know (recognize) that it was Jesus.

After saying this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there. But she did not know that it was Jesus.

15 J esus said to her, Woman, why are you crying ? For Whom are you looking? Supposing that it was the gardener, she replied, Sir, if you carried Him away from here, tell me where you have put Him and I will take Him away.

He said to her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who are you looking for?” She thought He was the man who cared for the garden. She said to Him, “Sir, if you have taken Jesus from here, tell me where you have put Him. I will take Him away.”

16 J esus said to her, Mary! Turning around she said to Him in Hebrew, Rabboni!—which means Teacher or Master.

Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned around and said to Him, “Teacher!”

17 J esus said to her, Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to My brethren and tell them, I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.

Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to Me. I have not yet gone up to My Father. But go to My brothers. Tell them that I will go up to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God!”

18 A way came Mary Magdalene, bringing the disciples news (word) that she had seen the Lord and that He had said these things to her.

Mary Magdalene went and told the followers that she had seen the Lord. She told them the things He had said to her. Jesus Was Seen by His Followers—Thomas Was Not There

19 T hen on that same first day of the week, when it was evening, though the disciples were behind closed doors for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace to you!

It was evening of the first day of the week. The followers had gathered together with the doors locked because they were afraid of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said, “May you have peace.”

20 S o saying, He showed them His hands and His side. And when the disciples saw the Lord, they were filled with joy (delight, exultation, ecstasy, rapture).

When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. When the followers saw the Lord, they were filled with joy. Jesus Sends His Followers to Preach

21 T hen Jesus said to them again, Peace to you! as the Father has sent Me forth, so I am sending you.

Then Jesus said to them again, “May you have peace. As the Father has sent Me, I also am sending you.”

22 A nd having said this, He breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit!

When Jesus had said this, He breathed on them. He said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

23 ' > led and directed by Him] if you forgive the sins of anyone, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of anyone, they are retained.

If you say that people are free of sins, they are free of them. If you say that people are not free of sins, they still have them.” Thomas Does Not Believe Jesus Is Raised from the Dead

24 B ut Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came.

Thomas was not with them when Jesus came. He was one of the twelve followers and was called the Twin.

25 S o the other disciples kept telling him, We have seen the Lord! But he said to them, Unless I see in His hands the marks made by the nails and put my finger into the nail prints, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe.

The other followers told him, “We have seen the Lord!” He said to them, “I will not believe until I see the marks made by the nails in His hands. I will not believe until I put my finger into the marks of the nails. I will not believe until I put my hand into His side.” Jesus Was Seen Again by His Followers—Thomas Was There

26 E ight days later His disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, though they were behind closed doors, and stood among them and said, Peace to you!

Eight days later the followers were again inside a house. Thomas was with them. The doors were locked. Jesus came and stood among them. He said, “May you have peace!”

27 T hen He said to Thomas, Reach out your finger here, and see My hands; and put out your hand and place in My side. Do not be faithless and incredulous, but believe!

He said to Thomas, “Put your finger into My hands. Put your hand into My side. Do not doubt, believe!”

28 T homas answered Him, My Lord and my God!

Thomas said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 J esus said to him, Because you have seen Me, Thomas, do you now believe (trust, have faith)? Blessed and happy and to be envied are those who have never seen Me and yet have believed and adhered to and trusted and relied on Me.

Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you believe. Those are happy who have never seen Me and yet believe!”

30 T here are also many other signs and miracles which Jesus performed in the presence of the disciples which are not written in this book.

Jesus did many other powerful works in front of His followers. They are not written in this book.

31 B ut these are written (recorded) in order that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ (the Anointed One), the Son of God, and that through believing and cleaving to and trusting and relying upon Him you may have life through (in) His name '> through Who He is].

But these are written so you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. When you put your trust in Him, you will have life that lasts forever through His name.
