1 A gain the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
The Word of the Lord came to me, saying,
2 S on of man, cause Jerusalem to know, understand, and realize her abominations are disgusting, detestable, and shamefully vile.
“Son of man, make known to Jerusalem her hated sins.
3 A nd say, Thus says the Lord God to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth are thoroughly Canaanitish; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.
Tell them, ‘This is what the Lord God says to Jerusalem: “Your beginning and your birth are from the land of the Canaanite. Your father was an Amorite and your mother was a Hittite.
4 A nd as for your birth, on the day you were born your navel cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to cleanse you, nor rubbed with salt or swaddled with bands at all.
On the day you were born the cord between you and your mother was not cut. You were not washed with water to make you clean. You were not rubbed with salt or even covered with cloth.
5 N o eye pitied you to do any of these things for you, to have compassion on you; but you were cast out in the open field, for your person was abhorrent and loathsome on the day that you were born.
No one looked with pity on you or did any of these things for you out of loving-kindness. Instead you were thrown out into the open field, for you were hated on the day you were born.
6 A nd when I passed by you and saw you rolling about in your blood, I said to you in your blood, Live! Yes, I said to you still in your natal blood, Live!
“When I passed by you and saw you rolling about in your blood, I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’ Yes, I said to you while you were in your blood, ‘Live!’
7 I caused you to multiply as the bud which grows in the field, and you increased and became tall and you came to full maidenhood and beauty; your breasts were formed and your hair had grown, yet you were naked and bare.
I made you become many, like plants of the field. Then you grew up and became tall. You grew into a beautiful woman. You had breasts and your hair had grown. Yet you were not covered and your body could be seen.
8 N ow I passed by you again and looked upon you; behold, you were maturing and at the time for love, and I spread My skirt over you and covered your nakedness. Yes, I plighted My troth to you and entered into a covenant with you, says the Lord, and you became Mine.
Then I passed by you and saw that you were old enough for love. So I spread my clothing over you and covered your body. I gave you my promise and made an agreement with you so that you became Mine,” says the Lord God.
9 T hen I washed you with water; yes, I thoroughly washed away your blood from you and I anointed you with oil.
“Then I washed you with water, washed the blood from you, and poured oil on you.
10 I clothed you also with embroidered cloth and shod you with leather; and I girded you about with fine linen and covered you with silk.
I dressed you with beautiful cloth, and put leather shoes on your feet. I dressed you with fine linen and covered you with silk.
11 I decked you also with ornaments and I put bracelets on your wrists and a chain on your neck.
I put on you objects of beauty. I put beautiful objects on your arms and around your neck.
12 A nd I put a ring on your nostril and earrings in your ears and a beautiful crown upon your head!
I put rings in your nose and in your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head.
13 T hus you were decked with gold and silver, and your raiment was of fine linen and silk and embroidered cloth; you ate fine flour and honey and oil. And you were exceedingly beautiful and you prospered into royal estate.
So you were dressed with gold and silver. Your clothing was of fine linen, silk, and beautiful cloth. You ate fine flour, honey, and oil. So you were very beautiful, and you became a queen.
14 A nd your renown went forth among the nations for your beauty, for it was perfect through My majesty and splendor which I had put upon you, says the Lord God.
Your name became known among the nations because of your beauty. For it was perfect because of My shining-greatness which I had given to you,” says the Lord God.
15 B ut you trusted in and relied on your own beauty and were unfaithful to God and played the harlot because of your renown, and you poured out your fornications upon anyone who passed by and your beauty was his.
“But you trusted in your beauty. Because your name was well-known, you acted like a woman who sells the use of her body. And you did sex sins with anyone who passed by.
16 A nd you took some of your garments and made for yourself gaily decorated high places or shrines and played the harlot on them—things which should not come and that which should not take place.
You took some of your clothes of many colors and made for yourself places of worship. There you acted like a woman who sells the use of her body. Such things should never happen or come to pass.
17 Y ou did also take your fair jewels and beautiful vessels of My gold and My silver which I had given you and made for yourself images of men, and you played the harlot with them;
You also took your objects of beauty made of My gold and silver, which I had given you. And you used them to make things that looked like men, that you might play with them as a woman who sells the use of her body.
18 A nd you took your embroidered garments and covered them and set My oil and My incense before them.
Then you took your beautiful cloth and covered them, and set My oil and My special perfume in front of them.
19 M y bread also which I gave you—fine flour and oil and honey with which I fed you—you have even set it before the idols for a sweet odor. Thus it was, says the Lord God.
You also set in front of them My bread which I gave you, the fine flour, oil and honey I gave you to eat. You gave it all to them as a special perfume. So it was,” says the Lord God.
20 M oreover, you have taken your sons and your daughters whom you have borne to Me, and you have sacrificed them to be destroyed. Were your harlotries too little,
“You even took your sons and daughters whom you had given birth for Me, and gave them to the false gods to be destroyed. Were your sex sins too little?
21 T hat you have slain My children and delivered them up, in setting them apart and causing them to pass through the fire for ?
You killed My children and gave them as burnt gifts to false gods.
22 A nd in all your abominations and idolatrous whoredoms you have not remembered the days of your youth when you were naked and bare, rolling about in your natal blood.
And in all your hated acts and sex sins you did not remember the days when you were young. You did not remember when you were without clothing or covering, and when you rolled about in your blood.
23 A nd after all your wickedness—Woe, woe to you! says the Lord God—
“It is bad for you!” says the Lord God. “After all your sinful acts,
24 Y ou have built also for yourself a vaulted chamber (brothel) and have made a high place in every street.
you built a place of worship for yourself, and a high place in every street.
25 A t every crossway you built your high place and have made your beauty an abomination; and you have made your body available to every passerby and multiplied your harlotry.
You built yourself a high place at the beginning of every street and made your beauty a hated thing. You gave yourself to anyone who passed by, to make your sex sins many.
26 Y ou have also played the harlot with the Egyptians, your neighbors, whose worship is thoroughly sensuous, and you have multiplied your harlotry to provoke Me to anger.
You also gave the use of your body to the Egyptians, your neighbors who have much desire for sex sins. And you sinned many times to make Me angry.
27 B ehold therefore, I have stretched out My hand against you, diminished your ordinary allowance of food, and delivered you over to the will of those who hate and despise you, the daughters of the Philistines, who turned away in shame from your despicable policy and lewd behavior!
So I have raised My hand to punish you and have made your share smaller. I have given you over to the desire of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed of your sinful actions.
28 Y ou played the harlot also with the Assyrians because you were unsatiable; yes, you played the harlot with them, and yet you were not satisfied.
You also gave the use of your body to the Assyrians because you had not had enough. Yes, you even gave the use of your body to them and still thought you had not had enough.
29 M oreover, you multiplied your harlotry with the land of trade, with Chaldea, and yet even with this you were not satisfied.
You did many sex sins with Babylon, the land of those who trade. Yet even this was not enough for you.
30 H ow weak and spent with longing and lust is your heart and mind, says the Lord God, seeing you do all these things, the work of a bold, domineering harlot,
“How sinful your heart is,” says the Lord God, “that you do all these things, the actions of a sinful woman, and show no shame.
31 I n that you build your vaulted place (brothel) at the head of every street and make your high place at every crossing. But you were not like a harlot because you scorned pay.
You built your places of worship at the beginning of every street and made your high place at every crossing. But you were not like a woman who sells the use of her body, because you did not want pay.
32 R ather, you were as an adulterous wife who receives strangers instead of her husband!
You are like a wife who is not faithful and has strangers instead of her husband!
33 M en give gifts to all harlots, but you give your gifts to all your lovers and hire them, bribing, that they may come to you on every side for your harlotries (your idolatrous unfaithfulnesses to God).
Men give gifts to all women who sell the use of their body. But you give your gifts to all your lovers. You pay them to come to you from everywhere for your sex sins.
34 A nd you are different from other women in your harlotries, in that nobody follows you to lure you into harlotry and in that you give hire when no hire is given you; and so you are different.
You are different from other women in your sex sins. You go after men; they do not come to you. You pay men instead of them giving pay to you. Yes, you are different.” God Judges Jerusalem
35 T herefore, O harlot, hear the word of the Lord!
So, sinful woman, hear the Word of the Lord.
36 T hus says the Lord God: Because your brass and your filthiness were emptied out and your nakedness uncovered through your harlotries with your lovers, and because of all the idols of your abominations, and the blood of your children that you gave to them,
The Lord God says, “Your shame was poured out and your clothing was taken off because of your sex sins with your lovers and with all your hated false gods. And you killed your children and gave them to false gods. Because of these things,
37 T herefore behold, I will gather all your lovers with whom you have taken pleasure, and all those whom you have loved with all those whom you have hated; I will even gather them against you on every side and will uncover your nakedness to them, that they may see all your nakedness.
I will gather all your lovers who pleased you. I will gather all those whom you loved and all those whom you hated. I will gather them against you from every side, and take off your covering so that they may see all your shame.
38 A nd I the Lord will judge you as women who break wedlock and shed blood are judged, and I will bring upon you the blood of wrath and jealousy.
I will punish you as I punish women who are not faithful in marriage, or women who kill. I will do it in My anger and jealousy.
39 A nd I will also give you into the hand of those, and they shall throw down your vaulted place (brothel) and shall demolish your high places; they shall strip you of your clothes and shall take your splendid jewels and leave you naked and bare.
And I will give you over to your lovers. They will tear down your places of worship and destroy your high places. They will take all of your clothes and your beautiful objects, and will leave you without any covering.
40 T hey shall also bring up a company against you, and they shall stone you with stones and hew down and thrust you through with their swords.
They will bring up a group of people against you, and they will kill you with stones and cut you to pieces with their swords.
41 A nd they shall burn your houses with fire and execute judgments upon you before the eyes of many women spectators. And I will cause you to cease playing the harlot, and you also shall give hire no more.
They will burn your houses with fire and punish you as many women watch. Then I will stop you from acting like a woman who sells the use of her body, and you will no longer pay your lovers.
42 S o will I make My wrath toward you to rest and My jealousy shall depart from you, and I will be quiet and will be no more angry.
Then I will take away My anger from you, and My jealousy will leave you. I will be at peace, and will not be angry any more.
43 B ecause you have not remembered the days of your youth but have enraged Me with all these things, therefore behold, I also will bring your deeds down on your own head, says the Lord God. Did you not commit this lewdness above and in addition to all your other abominations?
You have not remembered the days when you were young, but have made Me angry with all these things. So I will punish you for what you have done,” says the Lord God. “Did you not add these sex sins to all your other hated sins? More Sinful Than Samaria and Sodom
44 B ehold, everyone who uses proverbs will use this proverb against you: As is the mother, so is her daughter.
“Every one who uses sayings will use this saying about you: ‘Like mother, like daughter.’
45 Y ou are your mother’s daughter who loathed her husband and her children, and you are the sister of your sisters who loathed their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.
You are the daughter of your mother, who hated her husband and her children. You are also a sister of your sisters who hated their husbands and children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father was an Amorite.
46 A nd your elder sister is Samaria, she and her daughters who dwelt in the north and at your left hand; and your younger sister who dwelt in the south and at your right hand is Sodom and her daughters.
Your older sister is Samaria, who lives north of you with her daughters. And your younger sister is Sodom, who lives south of you with her daughters.
47 Y et you were not satisfied to walk after their ways or to do after their abominations, but very soon you were more corrupt in all your ways than they were.
Yet you have walked in their ways and done their hated acts. As if that were too little, you acted worse in all your ways than they.
48 A s I live, says the Lord God, Sodom your sister has not done, she nor her daughters, as you have done, you and your daughters.
As I live,” says the Lord God, “your sister Sodom and her daughters have not done as you and your daughters have done.
49 B ehold, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: pride, overabundance of food, prosperous ease, and idleness were hers and her daughters’; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters had pride, much food, and too much rest, but she did not help those who were poor and in need.
50 A nd they were haughty and committed abominable offenses before Me; therefore I removed them when I saw it and I saw fit.
They were proud and did hated sins in front of Me. So I took them away when I saw it.
51 N either has Samaria committed half of your sins, but you have multiplied your abominations more than they and have seemed to justify your sisters in all their wickedness by all the abominable things which you have done—you even make them appear righteous in comparison with you.
Samaria has not done half of your sins. You have done more sins than they. So you have made your sisters look right and good by all the hated sins which you have done.
52 T ake upon you and bear your own shame and disgrace, you also who called in question and judged your sisters, for you have virtually absolved them by your sins in which you behaved more abominably than they; they are more right than you. Yes, be ashamed and confounded and bear your shame and disgrace, you also, for you have seemed to justify your sisters and make them appear righteous.
Take your shame upon you, for you have made Me show favor to them in their punishment. Because of your sins in which you acted worse than they, they are more in the right than you. So then be ashamed and take your shame upon you, for you have made your sisters look right and good.
53 I will restore them again from their captivity, restore the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters and the fortunes of Samaria and her daughters, and I will restore your own fortunes in the midst of them,
“I will return them to their land, both Sodom and her daughters, and Samaria and her daughters. With them I will return you to your land.
54 T hat you, amid your shame and disgrace, may be compelled to recognize your wickedness and be thoroughly ashamed and confounded at all you have done, becoming consolation and comfort to
This is so you will take your shame upon you, and feel ashamed for all that you have done in becoming a comfort to them.
55 A nd your sisters, Sodom and her daughters shall return to their former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former estate; then you and your daughters shall return to your former estate.
Your sisters, Sodom with her daughters and Samaria with her daughters, will return to the land they had before. And you with your daughters will return to your land also.
56 F or was your sister Sodom not mentioned by you as a byword in the day of your pride,
You did not speak against your sister Sodom in the days of your pride,
57 B efore your own wickedness was uncovered? Now you have become like her, an object of reproach and a byword for the daughters of Syria and of Edom and for all who are round about them and for the daughters of the Philistines—those round about who despise you.
before your sinful acts were seen. Now you have become like her, an object of shame for the daughters of Edom and all her neighbors, and for the daughters of the Philistines. All those around you who hate you now look on you with shame.
58 Y ou bear the penalty of your lewdness and your abominations, says the Lord.
The penalty of your sex sins and other hated sins has come upon you,” says the Lord.
59 Y es, thus says the Lord God: I will even deal with you as you have done, who have despised the oath in breaking the covenant;
For the Lord God says, “I will do with you as you have done, because you have hated your promise by breaking the agreement. An Agreement That Lasts Forever
60 N evertheless, I will remember My covenant with you in the days of your youth and I will establish with you an everlasting covenant.
“But I will remember My agreement which I made with you when you were young. And I will make an agreement with you that lasts forever.
61 T hen you will remember your ways and be ashamed and confounded when you shall receive your sisters, both your elder and your younger; I will give them to you as daughters, but not on account of your covenant.
Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed when you receive your sisters, both your older one and younger one. I will give them to you as daughters, but not because of your agreement with Me.
62 A nd I will establish My covenant with you, and you shall know (understand and realize) that I am the Lord,
So I will make My agreement with you, and you will know that I am the Lord.
63 T hat you may remember and be ashamed and confounded and never open your mouth again because of your shame, when I have forgiven you all that you have done, says the Lord God.
Then you will remember and be ashamed. You will never open your mouth again because of your shame, when I have forgiven you for all that you have done,” says the Lord God.
