Psalm 88 ~ Psalm 88

picture

1 O Lord, the God of my salvation, I have cried to You for help by day; at night I am in Your presence.

O Lord, the God Who saves me, I have cried out before You day and night.

2 L et my prayer come before You and really enter into Your presence; incline Your ear to my cry!

Let my prayer come to You. Listen to my cry.

3 F or I am full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol (the place of the dead).

For my soul is filled with troubles. And my life comes near the grave.

4 I am counted among those who go down into the pit (the grave); I am like a man who has no help or strength,

I am added among those who go down into the deep hole. I am like a man without strength.

5 C ast away among the dead, like the slain that lie in a grave, whom You remember no more, and they are cut off from Your hand.

I am left among the dead, like those who have been killed and lie in the grave, whom You remember no more. They are cut off from Your help.

6 Y ou have laid me in the depths of the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps.

You have put me in the deepest hole, in a dark and deep place.

7 Y our wrath lies hard upon me, and You have afflicted me with all Your waves. Selah!

Your anger has rested upon me. And You have troubled me with all Your waves.

8 Y ou have put my friends far from me; You have made me an abomination to them. I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.

You have taken my good friends far from me. You have made me hated by them. I am shut in and cannot go out.

9 M y eye grows dim because of sorrow and affliction. Lord, I have called daily on You; I have spread forth my hands to You.

My eyes have become weak because of trouble. I have called to You every day, O Lord. I have spread out my hands to You.

10 W ill You show wonders to the dead? Shall the departed arise and praise You? Selah!

Will You show Your great works to the dead? Will the dead rise and praise You?

11 S hall Your steadfast love be declared in the grave? Or Your faithfulness in Abaddon (Sheol, as a place of ruin and destruction)?

Will Your loving-kindness be told about in the grave, and how faithful You are in the place that destroys?

12 S hall Your wonders be known in the dark? And Your righteousness in the place of forgetfulness ?

Will Your great works be known in the darkness, and Your right and good works in the land where all is forgotten?

13 B ut to You I cry, O Lord; and in the morning shall my prayer come to meet You.

But I have cried to You for help, O Lord. My prayer comes to You in the morning.

14 L ord, why do You cast me off? Why do You hide Your face from me?

O Lord, why do You turn away from me? Why do You hide Your face from me?

15 I was afflicted and close to death from my youth up; while I suffer Your terrors I am distracted.

I have been troubled and near death since I was young. I have suffered Your punishment. And I cannot win.

16 Y our fierce wrath has swept over me; Your terrors have destroyed me.

Your burning anger has passed over me. The punishment You have sent destroys me.

17 T hey surround me like a flood all day long; together they have closed in upon me.

They gather around me like water all day long. Together they close in upon me.

18 L over and friend have You put far from me; my familiar friends are darkness and the grave.

You have taken my friend and loved one far from me. Friends that were near to me are in darkness.
