1 F ilistenii s'au luptat cu Israel, şi bărbaţii lui Israel au luat -o la fugă dinaintea Filistenilor, şi au căzut ucişi pe muntele Ghilboa.

Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel. And the men of Israel ran from the Philistines and were killed and fell on Mount Gilboa.

2 F ilistenii au urmărit pe Saul şi pe fiii lui, şi au ucis pe Ionatan, Abinadab şi Malchişua, fiii lui Saul.

The Philistines came after Saul and his sons. They killed Saul’s sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malchishua.

3 S aul a fost prins în toiul luptei; arcaşii l-au ajuns şi l-au rănit greu.

The battle went against Saul. The men who used the bow hit him with arrows and hurt him very much.

4 S aul a zis atunci celui ce -i ducea armele:,, Scoate-ţi sabia, şi străpunge-mă, ca nu cumva aceşti netăiaţi împrejur să vină să mă străpungă şi să-şi bată joc de mine.`` Cel ce -i ducea armele n'a voit, căci îi era teamă. Şi Saul şi -a luat sabia, şi s'a aruncat în ea.

Then Saul said to the one who carried his battle-clothes, “Take your sword and cut through me with it. Or these men who have not gone through our religious act will come and kill me with the sword and make fun of me.” But the one who carried his battle-clothes would not do it, for he was filled with fear. So Saul took his sword and fell on it.

5 C el ce ducea armele lui Saul, văzîndu -l mort, s'a aruncat şi el în sabia lui, şi a murit împreună cu el.

When the one who carried his battle-clothes saw that Saul was dead, he fell on his sword also, and died with him.

6 A stfel au perit în acelaş timp şi în aceeaş zi, Saul şi cei trei fii ei lui, cel ce -i purta armele, şi toţi oamenii lui.

So Saul, his three sons, the one who carried his battle-clothes, and all his men, died that day together.

7 C ei din Israel, cari erau dincolo de vale şi dincolo de Iordan, văzînd că oamenii lui Israel fugeau şi să Saul şi fiii lui muriseră, şi-au părăsit cetăţile şi au luat -o şi ei la fugă. Şi Filistenii au venit şi s'au aşezat în ele.

The men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, on the other side of the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel had run away and that Saul and his sons were dead. So they left the cities and ran away. Then the Philistines came and lived in them.

8 A doua zi, Filistenii au venit să desbrace pe cei morţi, şi au găsit pe Saul şi pe cei trei fii ai lui căzuţi pe muntele Ghilboa.

When the Philistines came to rob the dead the next day, they found Saul and his three sons lying on Mount Gilboa.

9 A u tăiat capul lui Saul, şi i-au luat armele. Apoi au trimes să dea de veste prin toată ţara Filistenilor în casele idolilor lor şi în popor.

They cut off Saul’s head and took his sword and battle-clothes, and sent them through the land of the Philistines. They sent them to carry the good news to the house of their gods and to the people.

10 A u pus armele lui Saul în casa Astarteelor, şi i-au atîrnat trupul pe zidurile Bet-Şanului.

They put his sword and battle-clothes in the house of their god Ashtaroth. And they tied his body to the wall of Beth-shan.

11 C înd au auzit locuitorii Iabesului din Galaad ce au făcut Filistenii lui Saul,

When the people of Jabesh-gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,

12 t oţi vitejii s'au sculat, au mers toată noaptea şi au luat de pe zidurile Bet-Şanului trupul lui Saul şi trupurile fiilor lui. Apoi s'au întors la Iabes, unde le-au ars;

all the men with strength of heart went and walked all night. They took the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and came to Jabesh. There they burned them.

13 l e-au luat oasele, şi le-au îngropat subt stejarul din Iabes. Şi au postit şapte zile

They took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh. And they did not eat for seven days.
