1 C opiii lui Israel au pornit, şi au tăbărît în şesurile Moabului, dincolo de Iordan, în faţa Ierihonului.

Then the people of Israel traveled on and set up their tents in the plains of Moab on the other side of the Jordan beside Jericho.

2 B alac, fiul lui Ţipor, a văzut tot ce făcuse Israel Amoriţilor.

Now Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.

3 Ş i Moab a rămas foarte îngrozit în faţa unui popor atît de mare la număr; l -a apucat groaza în faţa copiilor lui Israel.

So Moab was filled with much fear because of the people, for they were many. Moab was very afraid of the people of Israel.

4 M oab a zis bătrînilor lui Madian:,, Mulţimea aceasta are să înghită tot ce este în jurul nostru, cum paşte boul verdeaţa de pe cîmp.`` Balac, fiul lui Ţipor, era pe atunci împărat al Moabului.

And Moab said to the leaders of Midian, “Now these people will take away everything around us like the bull eats up the grass of the field.” Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.

5 E l a trimis soli la Balaam, fiul lui Beor, la Petor pe Rîu (Eufrat), în ţara fiilor poporului său, ca să -l cheme, şi să -i spună:,, Iată, un popor a ieşit din Egipt; acopere faţa pămîntului, şi s'a aşezat în faţa mea.

So he sent men to Balaam the son of Beor, at Pethor, which is near the River in the land of the children of his people. They said to him, “See, a people came out of Egypt. See, they cover the land, and they are living beside me.

6 V ino, te rog, să-mi blastămi pe poporul acesta, căci este mai puternic decît mine; poate că aşa, îl voi putea bate şi -l voi izgoni din ţară, căci ştiu că pe cine binecuvintezi tu este binecuvîntat, şi pe cine blastămi tu este blăstămat.``

Now come, I beg you. Curse this people for me, because they are too strong for me. Then I may be able to win the battle against them and send them out of the land. For I know that good will come to the one you pray for, and trouble will come to the one you curse.”

7 B ătrînii lui Moab şi bătrînii lui Madian au plecat, avînd cu ei daruri pentru ghicitor. Au ajuns la Balaam, şi i-au spus cuvintele lui Balac.

So the leaders of Moab and the leaders of Midian left with the pay in their hand for the one who tells what will happen in the future. When they came to Balaam, they told him Balak’s words.

8 B alaam le -a zis:,, Rămîneţi aici peste noapte, şi vă voi da răspuns, după cum îmi va spune Domnul.`` Şi căpeteniile Moabului au rămas la Balaam.

Balaam said to them, “Stay here tonight. I will bring word to you as the Lord may speak to me.” So the leaders of Moab stayed with Balaam.

9 D umnezeu a venit la Balaam, şi a zis:,, Cine sînt oamenii aceştia pe cari -i ai la tine?``

Then God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?”

10 B alaam a răspuns lui Dumnezeu:,, Balac, fiul lui Ţipor, împăratul Moabului, i -a trimes să-mi spună:

Balaam said to God, “Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent word to me, saying,

11 I ată, un popor a ieşit din Egipt, şi acopere faţa pămîntului; vino dar, şi blastămă -l; poate că aşa îl voi putea bate, şi -l voi izgoni.``

‘See, the people who came out of Egypt cover the land. Now come, curse them for me. Then I may be able to fight against them and send them away.’”

12 D umnezeu a zis lui Balaam:,, Să nu te duci cu ei; şi nici să nu blastămi poporul acela, căci este binecuvîntat.``

God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them. Do not curse the people, for I have decided that good would come to them.”

13 B alaam s'a sculat dimineaţa, şi a zis căpeteniilor lui Balac:,, Duceţi-vă înapoi în ţara voastră, căci Domnul nu vrea să mă lase să merg cu voi.``

So Balaam got up in the morning and said to Balak’s leaders, “Return to your land. For the Lord will not let me go with you.”

14 Ş i mai marii Moabului s'au sculat, s'au întors la Balac, şi i-au spus:,, Balaam n'a vrut să vină cu noi.``

So the leaders of Moab got up and went to Balak, and said, “Balaam would not come with us.”

15 B alac a trimes din nou mai multe căpetenii mai cu vază decît cele dinainte.

Balak sent leaders again, more than were sent before, and men who were more important.

16 A u ajuns la Balaam, şi i-au zis:,, Aşa vorbeşte Balac, fiul lui Ţipor:, Nu mai pune piedici, şi vino la mine;

They came to Balaam and said to him, “Balak the son of Zippor says, ‘I beg you, let nothing keep you from coming to me.

17 c ăci îţi voi da multă cinste, şi voi face tot ce-mi vei spune; numai vino, te rog, şi blastămă-mi poporul acesta!``

I will give you much honor. I will do whatever you tell me. I beg you to come and curse these people for me.’”

18 B alaam, a răspuns şi a zis slujitorilor lui Balac:,, Să-mi dea Balac chiar şi casa lui plină de argint şi de aur, şi tot n'aş putea să fac niciun lucru, fie mic fie mare, împotriva poruncii Domnului, Dumnezeului meu.

Balaam answered and said to Balak’s men, “Balak could give me his house full of silver and gold. But I could not do anything, small or big, against the Word of the Lord my God.

19 T otuş vă rog, rămîneţi aici la noapte, şi voi vedea ce-mi va mai spune Domnul.``

Now I ask you to stay here tonight. I will find out what else the Lord will say to me.”

20 D umnezeu a venit la Balaam în timpul nopţii, şi i -a zis:,, Fiindcă oamenii aceştia au venit să te cheme, scoală-te, şi du-te cu ei; dar să faci numai ce-ţi voi spune.``

God came to Balaam at night and said to him, “If the men have come to call you, get up and go with them. But do only what I tell you.” Balaam’s Donkey and the Angel

21 B alaam s'a sculat dimineaţa, a pus şaua pe măgăriţă, şi a plecat cu căpeteniile lui Moab.

So Balaam got up in the morning and got his donkey ready, and went with the leaders of Moab.

22 D umnezeu S'a aprins de mînie, pentrucă plecase. Şi Îngerul Domnului S'a aşezat în drum, ca să i se împotrivească. Balaam era călare pe măgăriţa lui, şi cei doi slujitori ai lui erau cu el.

But God was angry because he was going. The angel of the Lord stood in the way against him. Balaam was sitting on his donkey, and his two servants were with him.

23 M ăgăriţa a văzut pe Îngerul Domnului stînd în drum, cu sabia scoasă din teacă în mînă, s'a abătut din drum, şi a luat -o pe cîmp. Balaam şi -a bătut măgăriţa ca s'o aducă la drum.

When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way with his sword in his hand, the donkey turned off the road and went into the field. But Balaam hit the donkey to turn her on the road again.

24 Î ngerul Domnului S'a aşezat într'o cărare dintre vii, şi de fiecare parte a cărării era cîte un zid.

Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path in the grape-field, with a wall on each side.

25 M ăgăriţa a văzut pe Îngerul Domnului; s'a strîns spre zid, şi a strîns piciorul lui Balaam de zid. Balaam a bătut -o din nou.

The donkey saw the angel of the Lord. So she pushed herself against the wall and crushed Balaam’s foot against it, so he hit her again.

26 Î ngerul Domnului a trecut mai departe, şi S'a aşezat într'un loc unde nu era chip să te întorci nici la dreapta nici la stînga.

Then the angel of the Lord went farther. He stood in a narrow place where there was no way to turn to the right or the left.

27 M ăgăriţa a văzut pe Îngerul Domnului, şi s'a culcat subt Balaam. Balaam s'a aprins de mînie, şi a bătut măgăriţa cu un băţ.

When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, she lay down under Balaam. So Balaam was angry and hit the donkey with his stick.

28 D omnul a deschis gura măgăriţei, şi ea a zis lui Balaam:,, Ce ţi-am făcut, de m'ai bătut de trei ori?``

And the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you? Why have you hit me these three times?”

29 B alaam a răspuns măgăriţei:,, Pentrucă ţi-ai bătut joc de mine; dacă aş avea o sabie în mînă, te-aş ucide pe loc.``

Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have made a fool of me! If there had been a sword in my hand, I would have killed you by now!”

30 M ăgăriţa a zis lui Balaam:,, Nu sînt eu oare măgăriţa ta, pe care ai călărit în tot timpul pînă în ziua de azi? Am eu oare obicei să-ţi fac aşa?`` Şi el a răspuns:,, Nu.``

The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey on which you have traveled all your life to this day? Have I ever done this to you before?” And Balaam said, “No.”

31 D omnul a deschis ochii lui Balaam, şi Balaam a văzut pe Îngerul Domnului stînd în drum, cu sabia scoasă în mînă. Şi s'a plecat, şi s'a aruncat cu faţa la pămînt.

Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way with his sword in his hand. And he bowed to the ground.

32 Î ngerul Domnului i -a zis:,, Pentru ce ţi-ai bătut măgăriţa de trei ori? Iată, Eu am ieşit ca să-ţi stau împotrivă, căci drumul pe care mergi, este un drum care duce la perzare, înaintea Mea.

The angel of the Lord said to him, “Why have you hit your donkey these three times? See, I have come out against you, because your way was against me.

33 M ăgăriţa M'a văzut, şi s'a abătut de trei ori dinaintea Mea; dacă nu s'ar fi abătut dinaintea Mea, pe tine te-aş fi omorît, iar pe ea aş fi lăsat -o vie.``

But the donkey saw me and turned from me these three times. If she had not turned from me, for sure I would have killed you, and let her live.”

34 B alaam a zis Îngerului Domnului:,, Am păcătuit, căci nu ştiam că te-ai aşezat înaintea mea în drum; şi acum, dacă nu găseşti că e bine ce fac eu, mă voi întoarce.``

Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, “I have sinned. For I did not know that you were standing in the way against me. But now, if it does not please you, I will turn back.”

35 Î ngerul Domnului a zis lui Balaam:,, Du-te cu oamenii aceştia; dar să spui numai cuvintele pe cari ţi le voi spune Eu.`` Şi Balaam a plecat înainte cu căpeteniile lui Balac.

The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men. But speak only what I tell you.” So Balaam went with the leaders of Balak.

36 B alac a auzit că vine Balaam, şi i -a ieşit înainte pînă la cetatea Moabului, care este la hotarul Arnonului, la hotarul cel mai depărtat.

Balak heard that Balaam was coming. He went out to meet him at the city of Moab, on the Arnon, at the far side of the country.

37 B alac a zis lui Balaam:,, N'am trimes eu oare la tine să te cheme? Pentru ce n'ai venit la mine? Cum, nu pot eu oare să-ţi dau cinste?``

Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not send men to tell you to come? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able to honor you?”

38 B alaam a răspuns lui Balac:,, Iată că am venit la tine; acum, îmi va fi oare îngăduit să spun ceva? Voi spune cuvintele pe cari mi le va pune Dumnezeu în gură.``

Balaam said to Balak, “See, I have come to you! Am I able to speak anything at all? The Word that God puts in my mouth is what I must speak.”

39 B alaam a mers cu Balac, şi au ajuns la Chiriat-Huţot.

Then Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriathhuzoth.

40 B alac a jertfit boi şi oi, şi a trimes din ei lui Balaam şi căpeteniilor cari erau cu el.

Balak killed bulls and sheep on the altar in worship, and sent some to Balaam and the leaders who were with him.

41 D imineaţa, Balac a luat pe Balaam, şi l -a suit pe Bamot-Baal, de unde Balaam putea să vadă o parte din popor.

The next morning Balak took Balaam and brought him up to the high places of Baal. From there he saw part of the people of Israel.
