1 T hen the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said:

Domnul i-a răspuns lui Iov din mijlocul furtunii:

2 “ Who is this who darkens counsel By words without knowledge?

„Cine este cel ce-Mi întunecă sfatul, prin cuvântări lipsite de cunoştinţă?

3 N ow prepare yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me.

Încinge-ţi mijlocul ca un bărbat, ca Eu să te întreb şi tu să Mă înveţi.

4 “ Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding.

Unde erai când am aşezat temeliile pământului? Spune, dacă ai pricepere!

5 W ho determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it?

Cine i-a hotărât măsurile? Ştii? Cine a întins sfoara de măsurat peste el?

6 T o what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone,

Pe ce îi sunt sprijinite temeliile şi cine i-a pus piatra din capul unghiului,

7 W hen the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

atunci când stelele dimineţii cântau împreună şi toţi fiii lui Dumnezeu strigau de bucurie?

8 “ Or who shut in the sea with doors, When it burst forth and issued from the womb;

Cine a închis marea cu porţi, când a ţâşnit din pântece,

9 W hen I made the clouds its garment, And thick darkness its swaddling band;

când i-am făcut îmbrăcăminte din nori şi am înfăşat-o în întuneric gros,

10 W hen I fixed My limit for it, And set bars and doors;

când i-am pus hotare, zăvoare şi porţi,

11 W hen I said, ‘This far you may come, but no farther, And here your proud waves must stop!’

când i-am zis: «Până aici să vii, să nu treci mai departe, aici să se oprească mândria valurilor tale!»?

12 “ Have you commanded the morning since your days began, And caused the dawn to know its place,

Ai poruncit tu vreodată dimineţii sau ai arătat zorilor locul lor,

13 T hat it might take hold of the ends of the earth, And the wicked be shaken out of it?

ca să prindă pământul de margini şi să-i scuture pe cei răi de pe el?

14 I t takes on form like clay under a seal, And stands out like a garment.

Pământul ia forma lutului sub o pecete; înfăţisarea lui este ca cea a unei haine.

15 F rom the wicked their light is withheld, And the upraised arm is broken.

Lumina este luată de la cei răi şi braţul lor cel ridicat este zdrobit.

16 “ Have you entered the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in search of the depths?

Ai fost tu la izvoarele mării sau te-ai plimbat tu prin adâncurile ei?

17 H ave the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the doors of the shadow of death?

Ţi-au fost arătate porţile morţii sau ai văzut tu porţile umbrei morţii ?

18 H ave you comprehended the breadth of the earth? Tell Me, if you know all this.

Pricepi tu cât de larg este pământul? Vorbeşte dacă ştii toate aceste lucruri.

19 “ Where is the way to the dwelling of light? And darkness, where is its place,

Unde este calea către locuinţa luminii şi unde este locuinţa întunericului?

20 T hat you may take it to its territory, That you may know the paths to its home?

Poţi să le duci tu la hotarul lor şi cunoşti tu căile către casa lor?

21 D o you know it, because you were born then, Or because the number of your days is great?

Cu siguranţă, ar trebui să ştii, căci doar erai deja născut! Şi numărul zilelor tale este mare!

22 “ Have you entered the treasury of snow, Or have you seen the treasury of hail,

Ai intrat tu în cămările zăpezii sau ai văzut tu cămările grindinei,

23 W hich I have reserved for the time of trouble, For the day of battle and war?

pe care Eu le-am păstrat pentru vreme de necaz, pentru ziua de luptă şi de război?

24 B y what way is light diffused, Or the east wind scattered over the earth?

Unde este calea către locul de unde iese fulgerul ? De unde este împrăştiat vântul de răsărit pe pământ?

25 “ Who has divided a channel for the overflowing water, Or a path for the thunderbolt,

Cine deschide o cale pentru ploaie şi o cărare pentru trăsnet,

26 T o cause it to rain on a land where there is no one, A wilderness in which there is no man;

ca să ude pământul nelocuit, deşertul în care nu trăieşte nimeni,

27 T o satisfy the desolate waste, And cause to spring forth the growth of tender grass?

ca să adape pământul pustiit şi să facă să încolţească iarba?

28 H as the rain a father? Or who has begotten the drops of dew?

Are ploaia tată? Sau cine dă naştere picăturilor de rouă?

29 F rom whose womb comes the ice? And the frost of heaven, who gives it birth?

Din care pântece iese gheaţa şi cine naşte bruma cerului

30 T he waters harden like stone, And the surface of the deep is frozen.

când apele se fac tari ca piatra şi când îngheaţă faţa adâncului?

31 “ Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, Or loose the belt of Orion?

Poţi tu lega lanţul Pleiadelor sau poţi să dezlegi frânghiile Orionului?

32 C an you bring out Mazzaroth in its season? Or can you guide the Great Bear with its cubs?

Poţi face să răsară constelaţiile la vremea lor sau poţi să călăuzeşti Ursul cu puii săi?

33 D o you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you set their dominion over the earth?

Cunoşti tu legile cerului? Poţi hotărî stăpânirea Lui asupra pământului?

34 “ Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, That an abundance of water may cover you?

Poţi să-ţi înalţi glasul până la nori şi să te acoperi cu un şuvoi de apă?

35 C an you send out lightnings, that they may go, And say to you, ‘Here we are! ’?

Poţi tu trimite fulgere ca astfel ele să plece? Îţi spun ele: «Iată-ne»!

36 W ho has put wisdom in the mind? Or who has given understanding to the heart?

Cine a pus înţelepciunea în locuri lăuntrice şi a dat pricepere minţii ?

37 W ho can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven,

Cine are înţelepciune să numere norii? Cine poate vărsa burdufurile cerurilor,

38 W hen the dust hardens in clumps, And the clods cling together?

pentru ca praful să se facă noroi şi bulgării de pământ să se lipească laolaltă?

39 “ Can you hunt the prey for the lion, Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

Poţi tu vâna prada pentru leoaică sau poţi să potoleşti pofta leilor tineri,

40 W hen they crouch in their dens, Or lurk in their lairs to lie in wait?

când stau ghemuiţi în viziunile lor sau când stau la pândă în culcuşul lor?

41 W ho provides food for the raven, When its young ones cry to God, And wander about for lack of food?

Cine pregăteşte corbului hrana, când puii lui strigă către Dumnezeu şi rătăcesc din lipsă de hrană?
