1 T hen Joshua rose early in the morning; and they set out from Acacia Grove and came to the Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they crossed over.

Dis-de-dimineaţă Iosua s-a sculat şi împreună cu tot poporul Israel au ieşit din Şitim şi au pornit spre Iordan. Ei au rămas acolo peste noapte, înainte de a traversa râul.

2 S o it was, after three days, that the officers went through the camp;

După trei zile dregătorii poporului au străbătut tabăra

3 a nd they commanded the people, saying, “When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests, the Levites, bearing it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it.

şi au poruncit poporului: „Când veţi vedea Chivotul Legământului cu Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, dus de preoţii leviţi, să porniţi din locul în care sunteţi şi să-l urmaţi.

4 Y et there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure. Do not come near it, that you may know the way by which you must go, for you have not passed this way before.”

Dar între voi şi el să păstraţi o distanţă de două mii de coţi. Să nu vă apropiaţi de el! Prin el voi veţi cunoaşte drumul pe care trebuie să mergeţi, căci nu aţi mai trecut niciodată pe drumul acesta.“

5 A nd Joshua said to the people, “Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.”

Iosua a zis poporului: „Sfinţiţi-vă, pentru că mâine Domnul va face lucrări minunate în mijlocul vostru!“

6 T hen Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, “Take up the ark of the covenant and cross over before the people.” So they took up the ark of the covenant and went before the people.

Iosua le-a spus apoi preoţilor: „Luaţi Chivotul Legământului şi treceţi înaintea poporului!“ Ei l-au luat şi au pornit în faţa poporului.

7 A nd the Lord said to Joshua, “This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.

Domnul i-a zis lui Iosua: „În această zi voi începe să te înalţ în ochii întregului Israel, ca să ştie astfel că Eu sunt cu tine tot aşa cum am fost şi cu Moise.

8 Y ou shall command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, saying, ‘When you have come to the edge of the water of the Jordan, you shall stand in the Jordan.’”

Porunceşte-le preoţilor care duc Chivotul Legământului şi spune-le: «Când veţi ajunge la marginea apelor Iordanului, să vă opriţi în Iordan!»“

9 S o Joshua said to the children of Israel, “Come here, and hear the words of the Lord your God.”

Iosua le-a spus israeliţilor: „Apropiaţi-vă ca să ascultaţi cuvintele Domnului, Dumnezeul vostru!

10 A nd Joshua said, “By this you shall know that the living God is among you, and that He will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Hivites and the Perizzites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Jebusites:

Prin aceasta veţi cunoaşte că Dumnezeul cel Viu este în mijlocul vostru şi că va nimici dinaintea voastră pe caananiţi, hitiţi, hiviţi, periziţi, ghirgasiţi, amoriţi şi iebusiţi.

11 B ehold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is crossing over before you into the Jordan.

Iată, Chivotul Legământului cu Stăpânul întregului pământ traversează Iordanul înaintea voastră.

12 N ow therefore, take for yourselves twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one man from every tribe.

Alegeţi acum doisprezece bărbaţi israeliţi, câte un bărbat din fiecare seminţie.

13 A nd it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off, the waters that come down from upstream, and they shall stand as a heap.”

Când picioarele preoţilor care duc Chivotul Domnului, Stăpânul întregului pământ, vor intra în apele Iordanului, apele care coboară din amonte se vor despica şi se vor opri grămadă.“

14 S o it was, when the people set out from their camp to cross over the Jordan, with the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people,

Poporul a ieşit din corturi ca să treacă Iordanul, iar preoţii care duceau Chivotul Legământului erau înaintea poporului.

15 a nd as those who bore the ark came to the Jordan, and the feet of the priests who bore the ark dipped in the edge of the water (for the Jordan overflows all its banks during the whole time of harvest),

Când preoţii ce duceau Chivotul au ajuns la Iordan, iar picioarele lor au atins marginea apelor Iordanului (căci Iordanul inundă ambele maluri pe toată perioada secerişului),

16 t hat the waters which came down from upstream stood still, and rose in a heap very far away at Adam, the city that is beside Zaretan. So the waters that went down into the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, failed, and were cut off; and the people crossed over opposite Jericho.

apele care curgeau din amonte s-au oprit adunându-se grămadă pe o mare distanţă, până la Adam, cetatea din vecinătatea Ţortanului, iar cele care coborau în aval spre Marea Arabei (Marea Sărată ), s-au scurs de tot. Şi astfel poporul a traversat ajungând în faţa Ierihonului.

17 T hen the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan; and all Israel crossed over on dry ground, until all the people had crossed completely over the Jordan.

Preoţii care duceau Chivotul Legământului cu Domnul s-au oprit pe uscat, în mijlocul Iordanului, timp în care tot Israelul îl traversa, până când întregul popor a traversat Iordanul.
