1 N ow it happened one day that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come, let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison that is on the other side.” But he did not tell his father.

Într-una din zile, Ionatan, fiul lui Saul, i-a zis tânărului care-i ducea armele: „Vino să pătrundem până la garnizoana filistenilor, care se află de cealaltă parte!“ Tatălui său însă nu i-a spus nimic.

2 A nd Saul was sitting in the outskirts of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron. The people who were with him were about six hundred men.

În acest timp, Saul se afla la marginea cetăţii Ghiva, sub rodiul din Migron, iar cei care se aflau cu el erau în număr de aproape şase sute de bărbaţi.

3 A hijah the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the Lord ’s priest in Shiloh, was wearing an ephod. But the people did not know that Jonathan had gone.

Se afla acolo şi Ahia, care purta un efod. El era fiul lui Ahitub şi fratele lui I-Cabod, fiul lui Fineas, nepotul lui Eli, preotul Domnului de la Şilo. Nimeni nu ştia însă că Ionatan plecase.

4 B etween the passes, by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp rock on one side and a sharp rock on the other side. And the name of one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.

De fiecare parte a trecătorii prin care voia Ionatan să treacă ca să ajungă la garnizoana filistenilor se afla câte un colţ de stâncă. Numele unuia era Boţeţ, iar al celuilalt era Seneh.

5 T he front of one faced northward opposite Michmash, and the other southward opposite Gibeah.

Unul dintre ele se afla în partea de nord, spre Micmaş, iar celălalt în partea de sud, spre Gheva.

6 T hen Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the Lord will work for us. For nothing restrains the Lord from saving by many or by few.”

Ionatan i-a zis tânărului care-i ducea armele: – Vino să pătrundem până la garnizoana acestor necircumcişi! Poate că Domnul va lucra pentru noi, căci nimic nu-L împiedică pe Domnul să izbăvească fie prin mulţi, fie prin puţini.

7 S o his armorbearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart. Go then; here I am with you, according to your heart.”

– Fă tot ceea ce ai în gând, i-a răspuns cel ce-i ducea armele. Iată că sunt cu tine în ceea ce ai de gând să faci.

8 T hen Jonathan said, “Very well, let us cross over to these men, and we will show ourselves to them.

– Ne vom îndrepta spre bărbaţii aceia şi ne vom arăta lor, a spus Ionatan.

9 I f they say thus to us, ‘Wait until we come to you,’ then we will stand still in our place and not go up to them.

Dacă ne vor zice să aşteptăm să se apropie ei de noi, atunci vom rămâne acolo unde suntem şi nu vom urca spre ei.

10 B ut if they say thus, ‘Come up to us,’ then we will go up. For the Lord has delivered them into our hand, and this will be a sign to us.”

Dar dacă ne vor zice să urcăm la ei, atunci vom urca, căci acesta este pentru noi semnul că Domnul îi dă în mâinile noastre.

11 S o both of them showed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines. And the Philistines said, “Look, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hidden.”

Aşadar, s-au arătat amândoi garnizoanei filistene, iar filistenii au zis: „Priviţi! Evreii ies din vizuinile în care s-au ascuns!“

12 T hen the men of the garrison called to Jonathan and his armorbearer, and said, “Come up to us, and we will show you something.” Jonathan said to his armorbearer, “Come up after me, for the Lord has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”

Bărbaţii din garnizoană au strigat către Ionatan şi către cel ce-i ducea armele, spunându-le: „Veniţi sus la noi şi vă vom arăta noi!“ Atunci Ionatan i-a spus celui ce-i ducea armele: „Urcă-te după mine pentru că Domnul i-a dat în mâna lui Israel.“

13 A nd Jonathan climbed up on his hands and knees with his armorbearer after him; and they fell before Jonathan. And as he came after him, his armorbearer killed them.

Ionatan s-a căţărat, folosindu-se de mâini şi de picioare, iar cel ce-i ducea armele îl urma. Filistenii cădeau înaintea lui Ionatan, iar cel ce-i ducea armele venea în urma lui şi-i omora.

14 T hat first slaughter which Jonathan and his armorbearer made was about twenty men within about half an acre of land.

În acest prim atac, Ionatan şi cel ce-i ducea armele au ucis aproape douăzeci de bărbaţi pe o întindere de o jumătate de iugăr de pământ.

15 A nd there was trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. The garrison and the raiders also trembled; and the earth quaked, so that it was a very great trembling.

Groaza a cuprins întreaga oştire: pe cei din tabără, pe cei din câmpie, pe cei din garnizoană şi pe cei care ieşiseră să pustiască, iar pământul se cutremura. Groaza aceasta a fost trimisă de Dumnezeu.

16 N ow the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and there was the multitude, melting away; and they went here and there.

Străjerii lui Saul, care se aflau în Ghiva lui Beniamin, s-au uitat şi au văzut oştirea împrăştiindu-se în toate părţile.

17 T hen Saul said to the people who were with him, “Now call the roll and see who has gone from us.” And when they had called the roll, surprisingly, Jonathan and his armorbearer were not there.

Atunci Saul le-a zis bărbaţilor care erau cu el: „Număraţi şi vedeţi cine a plecat din mijlocul nostru.“ Când au numărat, au văzut că Ionatan şi cel ce-i ducea armele lipseau.

18 A nd Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the ark of God here” (for at that time the ark of God was with the children of Israel).

Saul i-a zis lui Ahia: „Adu încoace Chivotul lui Dumnezeu!“ – pe atunci Chivotul lui Dumnezeu se afla la israeliţi.

19 N ow it happened, while Saul talked to the priest, that the noise which was in the camp of the Philistines continued to increase; so Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand.”

În timp ce Saul îi vorbea preotului, învălmăşeala din tabăra filistenilor a început să fie din ce în ce mai mare. Atunci Saul i-a zis preotului: „Retrage-ţi mâna!“

20 T hen Saul and all the people who were with him assembled, and they went to the battle; and indeed every man’s sword was against his neighbor, and there was very great confusion.

Apoi Saul şi oamenii lui s-au adunat şi au intrat în luptă unde au găsit o mare învălmăşeală deoarece filistenii se omorau între ei.

21 M oreover the Hebrews who were with the Philistines before that time, who went up with them into the camp from the surrounding country, they also joined the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.

Chiar şi aceia dintre evrei care fuseseră înainte cu filistenii şi se duseseră împreună cu aceştia în tabăra lor s-au întors şi s-au alăturat israeliţilor care erau cu Saul şi Ionatan.

22 L ikewise all the men of Israel who had hidden in the mountains of Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, they also followed hard after them in the battle.

De asemenea, când toţi bărbaţii care se ascunseseră în regiunea muntoasă a lui Efraim au auzit că filistenii au fugit, au intrat şi ei în luptă urmărindu-i.

23 S o the Lord saved Israel that day, and the battle shifted to Beth Aven. Saul’s Rash Oath

În acea zi, Domnul a izbăvit pe Israel, iar lupta s-a întins până dincolo de Bet-Aven. Viaţa lui Ionatan în primejdie

24 A nd the men of Israel were distressed that day, for Saul had placed the people under oath, saying, “Cursed is the man who eats any food until evening, before I have taken vengeance on my enemies.” So none of the people tasted food.

Bărbaţii lui Israel au fost sleiţi de puteri în acea zi, deoarece Saul pusese un jurământ asupra lor, spunând: „Blestemat să fie bărbatul care va mânca ceva până seara, înainte de a mă răzbuna pe duşmanii mei.“ Astfel, nici unul dintre ei n-a gustat mâncare.

25 N ow all the people of the land came to a forest; and there was honey on the ground.

Întreaga oştire a intrat într-o pădure unde, pe jos, se afla miere.

26 A nd when the people had come into the woods, there was the honey, dripping; but no one put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath.

Când au intrat în pădure, au văzut că mierea curgea din faguri, însă nimeni nu şi-a dus miere cu mâna la gură deoarece se temeau de blestem.

27 B ut Jonathan had not heard his father charge the people with the oath; therefore he stretched out the end of the rod that was in his hand and dipped it in a honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his countenance brightened.

Ionatan însă nu auzise jurământul cu care legase tatăl său oştirea. De aceea el a întins capătul băţului care se afla în mâna lui şi l-a înmuiat în mierea din fagure. Şi-a dus miere cu mâna la gură şi ochii i s-au luminat.

28 T hen one of the people said, “Your father strictly charged the people with an oath, saying, ‘Cursed is the man who eats food this day.’” And the people were faint.

Atunci unul dintre bărbaţi i-a spus: – Tatăl tău a pus oştirea sub un jurământ sever, spunând: „Blestemat să fie bărbatul care va mânca ceva în această zi.“ De aceea este istovită oştirea.

29 B ut Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land. Look now, how my countenance has brightened because I tasted a little of this honey.

Atunci Ionatan a răspuns: – Tatăl meu a pus ţara în primejdie. Priviţi cum mi s-au luminat ochii pentru că am gustat puţin din mierea aceasta!

30 H ow much better if the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies which they found! For now would there not have been a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?”

Cât de bine ar fi fost dacă oamenii ar fi mâncat astăzi din prada pe care au luat-o de la duşmanii lor! N-ar fi fost înfrângerea filistenilor mai mare?

31 N ow they had driven back the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. So the people were very faint.

În acea zi, după ce i-au zdrobit pe filisteni de la Micmaş până la Aialon, oamenii erau foarte obosiţi.

32 A nd the people rushed on the spoil, and took sheep, oxen, and calves, and slaughtered them on the ground; and the people ate them with the blood.

S-au năpustit asupra prăzii, au luat oi, vite şi viţei, le-au tăiat pe pământ şi le-au mâncat carnea cu sânge cu tot.

33 T hen they told Saul, saying, “Look, the people are sinning against the Lord by eating with the blood!” So he said, “You have dealt treacherously; roll a large stone to me this day.”

Unii i-au spus însă lui Saul: – Poporul păcătuieşte împotriva Domnului, mâncând carnea cu sânge cu tot. – Aţi arătat necredincioşie, a spus Saul. Acum, rostogoliţi până aici o piatră mare.

34 T hen Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people, and say to them, ‘Bring me here every man’s ox and every man’s sheep, slaughter them here, and eat; and do not sin against the Lord by eating with the blood.’” So every one of the people brought his ox with him that night, and slaughtered it there.

Daţi de veste printre oameni să-şi aducă fiecare boul sau oaia, să le taie aici şi apoi să le mănânce, ca să nu mai păcătuiască împotriva Domnului, mâncând carne cu sânge. Astfel, în acea noapte, fiecare şi-a adus cu el boul şi l-a tăiat acolo.

35 T hen Saul built an altar to the Lord. This was the first altar that he built to the Lord.

Saul a zidit un altar Domnului; era prima dată când zidea un altar Domnului.

36 N ow Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and plunder them until the morning light; and let us not leave a man of them.” And they said, “Do whatever seems good to you.” Then the priest said, “Let us draw near to God here.”

Apoi a zis: – Haideţi să-i urmărim pe filisteni în timpul nopţii, să-i prădăm până în zori şi să nu lăsăm viu pe nici unul dintre ei. – Fă tot ceea ce crezi că este bine, i-au răspuns ei. Dar preotul a zis: – Să ne apropiem aici de Dumnezeu.

37 S o Saul asked counsel of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will You deliver them into the hand of Israel?” But He did not answer him that day.

Saul L-a întrebat pe Dumnezeu: – Să-i urmăresc pe filisteni? Îi vei da în mâinile lui Israel? Însă, în acea zi, El nu i-a răspuns.

38 A nd Saul said, “Come over here, all you chiefs of the people, and know and see what this sin was today.

Atunci Saul a zis: – Să vină aici toţi conducătorii oştirii ca să descoperim ce păcat a fost săvârşit astăzi.

39 F or as the Lord lives, who saves Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But not a man among all the people answered him.

Viu este Domnul, Care îl izbăveşte pe Israel, că şi dacă ar fi vorba despre fiul meu Ionatan, chiar şi el va trebui să moară. Însă nimeni din popor nu i-a răspuns.

40 T hen he said to all Israel, “You be on one side, and my son Jonathan and I will be on the other side.” And the people said to Saul, “Do what seems good to you.”

Saul a zis întregului Israel: – Voi veţi sta într-o parte, iar eu împreună cu fiul meu Ionatan vom sta în partea cealaltă. – Fă ceea ce crezi că este bine, i-a răspuns poporul.

41 T herefore Saul said to the Lord God of Israel, “Give a perfect lot. ” So Saul and Jonathan were taken, but the people escaped.

Saul s-a rugat Domnului, Dumnezeul lui Israel: – Arată-ne adevărul! Sorţul a căzut pe Ionatan şi Saul, iar ceilalţi bărbaţi au scăpat.

42 A nd Saul said, “Cast lots between my son Jonathan and me.” So Jonathan was taken.

Atunci Saul a zis: – Aruncaţi sorţul între mine şi fiul meu Ionatan. Şi sorţul a căzut pe Ionatan.

43 T hen Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done.” And Jonathan told him, and said, “I only tasted a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand. So now I must die!”

Saul i-a zis lui Ionatan: – Spune-mi ce ai făcut. – Am gustat puţină miere cu capătul băţului pe care-l aveam în mână, i-a răspuns Ionatan. Iată-mă, sunt gata să mor!

44 S aul answered, “God do so and more also; for you shall surely die, Jonathan.”

– Dumnezeu să se poarte cu toată asprimea faţă de mine dacă nu vei muri, Ionatane! a zis Saul.

45 B ut the people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has accomplished this great deliverance in Israel? Certainly not! As the Lord lives, not one hair of his head shall fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day.” So the people rescued Jonathan, and he did not die.

Dar poporul i-a zis lui Saul: – Chiar trebuie să moară Ionatan, cel care a adus această mare victorie pentru Israel? Nicidecum! Viu este Domnul că nici măcar un fir de păr nu va cădea la pământ din capul lui, deoarece cu ajutorul Domnului a adus el victoria în această zi. Bărbaţii l-au salvat astfel pe Ionatan şi n-a fost ucis.

46 T hen Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, and the Philistines went to their own place. Saul’s Continuing Wars

Saul a încetat să-i mai urmărească pe filisteni şi filistenii s-au retras în teritoriul lor. Realizările şi familia lui Saul

47 S o Saul established his sovereignty over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, against the people of Ammon, against Edom, against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he harassed them.

După ce Saul a început să domnească peste Israel, el a luptat împotriva tuturor duşmanilor săi din toate părţile: împotriva moabiţilor, împotriva amoniţilor, împotriva edomiţilor, împotriva regilor din Ţoba şi împotriva filistenilor; oriunde se ducea ieşea victorios.

48 A nd he gathered an army and attacked the Amalekites, and delivered Israel from the hands of those who plundered them.

El a luptat vitejeşte şi i-a învins pe amalekiţi, eliberând Israelul de jefuitorii săi.

49 T he sons of Saul were Jonathan, Jishui, and Malchishua. And the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal.

Fiii lui Saul erau Ionatan, Işvi şi Malchi-Şua. Fiica sa cea mare se numea Merab, cea mică se numea Mihal,

50 T he name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. And the name of the commander of his army was Abner the son of Ner, Saul’s uncle.

iar soţia lui se numea Ahinoam, fiica lui Ahimaaţ. Numele conducătorului oştirii lui era Abner, fiul lui Ner, unchiul lui Saul.

51 K ish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.

Chiş, tatăl lui Saul, şi Ner, tatăl lui Abner, erau fiii lui Abiel.

52 N ow there was fierce war with the Philistines all the days of Saul. And when Saul saw any strong man or any valiant man, he took him for himself.

Cât timp a trăit Saul a existat un război înverşunat cu filistenii şi ori de câte ori Saul vedea un bărbat puternic sau curajos îl lua cu el.
