1 N ow it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, that this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying:

În al patrulea an al lui Iehoiachim, fiul lui Iosia, regele lui Iuda, a venit următorul cuvânt din partea Domnului la Ieremia:

2 “ Take a scroll of a book and write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel, against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah even to this day.

„Ia un sul şi scrie pe el toate cuvintele pe care ţi le-am spus cu privire la Israel, la Iuda şi la toate celelalte neamuri, din ziua când am început să-ţi vorbesc, din perioada lui Iosia şi până în ziua de azi.

3 I t may be that the house of Judah will hear all the adversities which I purpose to bring upon them, that everyone may turn from his evil way, that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.”

Poate când Casa lui Iuda va auzi toate nenorocirile pe care Eu plănuiesc să le aduc asupra lor, se vor întoarce fiecare de la căile lor rele şi le voi ierta astfel nelegiuirea şi păcatul.“

4 T hen Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah; and Baruch wrote on a scroll of a book, at the instruction of Jeremiah, all the words of the Lord which He had spoken to him.

Ieremia l-a chemat pe Baruc, fiul lui Neria, şi acesta a început să scrie într-un sul, după cum îi dicta Ieremia, toate cuvintele pe care Domnul i le spusese lui Ieremia.

5 A nd Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, “I am confined, I cannot go into the house of the Lord.

Apoi Ieremia i-a dat lui Baruc următoarea poruncă: „Eu sunt împiedicat să pot să intru în Casa Domnului.

6 Y ou go, therefore, and read from the scroll which you have written at my instruction, the words of the Lord, in the hearing of the people in the Lord ’s house on the day of fasting. And you shall also read them in the hearing of all Judah who come from their cities.

De aceea, du-te tu în Casa Domnului, în ziua postului, şi citeşte în auzul poporului cuvintele Domnului, pe care le-ai scris pe sul întocmai cum ţi le-am dictat. Citeşte-le şi în auzul tuturor celor din Iuda care vin din cetăţile lor.

7 I t may be that they will present their supplication before the Lord, and everyone will turn from his evil way. For great is the anger and the fury that the Lord has pronounced against this people.”

Poate vor înălţa o rugăciune înaintea Domnului şi se vor întoarce fiecare de la căile lor rele, căci mare este mânia şi furia pe care le-a rostit Domnul împotriva acestui popor.“

8 A nd Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading from the book the words of the Lord in the Lord ’s house.

Baruc, fiul lui Neria, a făcut tot ce i-a poruncit profetul Ieremia; el a citit din sul cuvintele Domnului, în Casa Domnului.

9 N ow it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before the Lord to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem.

În al cincilea an al domniei lui Iehoiachim, fiul lui Iosia, regele lui Iuda, în luna a noua, tot poporul Ierusalimului şi tot poporul care venise din cetăţile lui Iuda la Ierusalim a fost chemat la un post înaintea Domnului.

10 T hen Baruch read from the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the Lord, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the upper court at the entry of the New Gate of the Lord ’s house, in the hearing of all the people. The Scroll Read in the Palace

Atunci, din Casa Domnului, din odaia scribului Ghemaria, fiul lui Şafan, care era în curtea de sus, la intrarea Porţii Noi a Casei Domnului, Baruc a citit din sul cuvintele lui Ieremia în auzul întregului popor.

11 W hen Michaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, heard all the words of the Lord from the book,

Când Mica, fiul lui Ghemaria, fiul lui Şafan, a auzit toate cuvintele Domnului scrise pe sul,

12 h e then went down to the king’s house, into the scribe’s chamber; and there all the princes were sitting—Elishama the scribe, Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, Elnathan the son of Achbor, Gemariah the son of Shaphan, Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the princes.

s-a dus la palatul regelui, în odaia scribului. Toţi conducătorii erau acolo: scribul Elişama, Delaia, fiul lui Şemaia, Elnatan, fiul lui Acbor, Ghemaria, fiul lui Şafan, Zedechia, fiul lui Hanania, şi toţi ceilalţi conducători.

13 T hen Michaiah declared to them all the words that he had heard when Baruch read the book in the hearing of the people.

Mica i-a înştiinţat de toate cuvintele pe care le-a auzit, tot ce citise Baruc din sul în auzul poporului.

14 T herefore all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, “Take in your hand the scroll from which you have read in the hearing of the people, and come.” So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and came to them.

Atunci toţi conducătorii l-au trimis pe Iehudi, fiul lui Netania, fiul lui Şelemia, fiul lui Cuşi, la Baruc ca să-i spună: – Ia sulul din care ai citit înaintea poporului şi vino! Baruc, fiul lui Neria, a luat sulul în mâini şi s-a dus la ei.

15 A nd they said to him, “Sit down now, and read it in our hearing.” So Baruch read it in their hearing.

Ei i-au zis: – Aşază-te, te rugăm, şi citeşte-ne şi nouă. Baruc le-a citit şi lor.

16 N ow it happened, when they had heard all the words, that they looked in fear from one to another, and said to Baruch, “We will surely tell the king of all these words.”

Când au auzit ei toate cuvintele, s-au uitat unii la alţii cu groază şi i-au zis lui Baruc: – Trebuie să-l înştiinţăm pe rege în legătură cu aceste cuvinte!

17 A nd they asked Baruch, saying, “Tell us now, how did you write all these words—at his instruction?”

Spune-ne cum ai scris toate aceste cuvinte? Ţi le-a dictat Ieremia? l-au întrebat ei.

18 S o Baruch answered them, “He proclaimed with his mouth all these words to me, and I wrote them with ink in the book.”

Baruc le-a răspuns: – Da, el mi-a dictat toate aceste cuvinte, iar eu le-am scris pe sulul acesta cu cerneală.

19 T hen the princes said to Baruch, “Go and hide, you and Jeremiah; and let no one know where you are.” The King Destroys Jeremiah’s Scroll

Atunci conducătorii i-au zis lui Baruc: – Tu şi Ieremia duceţi-vă şi ascundeţi-vă şi nu spuneţi nimănui unde sunteţi.

20 A nd they went to the king, into the court; but they stored the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and told all the words in the hearing of the king.

După ce au pus sulul în odaia scribului Elişama, s-au dus la rege, în curte şi l-au înştiinţat în legătură cu toate cuvintele din sul.

21 S o the king sent Jehudi to bring the scroll, and he took it from Elishama the scribe’s chamber. And Jehudi read it in the hearing of the king and in the hearing of all the princes who stood beside the king.

Regele l-a trimis pe Iehudi ca să aducă sulul. Iehudi s-a dus şi a adus sulul din odaia scribului Elişama şi l-a citit înaintea regelui şi înaintea tuturor conducătorilor care stăteau lângă rege.

22 N ow the king was sitting in the winter house in the ninth month, with a fire burning on the hearth before him.

Regele locuia în reşedinţa de iarnă, fiindcă era luna a noua, iar în faţa lui, în vatră, era aprins un foc.

23 A nd it happened, when Jehudi had read three or four columns, that the king cut it with the scribe’s knife and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.

După ce Iehudi citea trei sau patru coloane din sul, regele le tăia cu un cuţitaş de răzuit şi le arunca în focul din vatră, până ce întregul sul a ars în întregime.

24 Y et they were not afraid, nor did they tear their garments, the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words.

Regele şi toţi slujitorii lui au ascultat toate cuvintele acestea, dar nu s-au îngrozit şi nu şi-au sfâşiat hainele.

25 N evertheless Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah implored the king not to burn the scroll; but he would not listen to them.

Chiar dacă Elnatan, Delaia şi Ghemaria au stăruit pe lângă rege să nu ardă sulul, el nu i-a ascultat,

26 A nd the king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son, Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet, but the Lord hid them. Jeremiah Rewrites the Scroll

ci i-a poruncit lui Ierahmeel, fiul regelui, lui Seraia, fiul lui Azriel şi lui Şelemia, fiul lui Abdeel, să pună mâna pe scribul Baruc şi pe profetul Ieremia. Dar Domnul îi ascunsese.

27 N ow after the king had burned the scroll with the words which Baruch had written at the instruction of Jeremiah, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying:

După ce regele a ars sulul care conţinea cuvintele scrise de Baruc, aşa cum i le dictase Ieremia, Cuvântul Domnului a venit la Ieremia şi i-a zis:

28 “ Take yet another scroll, and write on it all the former words that were in the first scroll which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned.

„Ia un alt sul şi scrie pe el toate cuvintele care erau pe primul sul, pe care Iehoiachim, regele lui Iuda, l-a ars.

29 A nd you shall say to Jehoiakim king of Judah, ‘Thus says the Lord: “You have burned this scroll, saying, ‘Why have you written in it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and cause man and beast to cease from here?’”

Iar lui Iehoiachim, regele lui Iuda, să-i spui că aşa vorbeşte Domnul: «Ai ars sulul acela şi ai întrebat: ‘De ce ai scris pe el că împăratul Babilonului va veni, va distruge ţara aceasta şi va nimici din mijlocul ei oamenii şi animalele?’»

30 T herefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: “He shall have no one to sit on the throne of David, and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night.

De aceea, aşa vorbeşte Domnul despre Iehoiachim, regele lui Iuda: «Nimeni dintre ai lui nu va mai şedea pe tronul lui David. Hoitul lui va fi aruncat şi va fi lăsat ziua la căldură şi noaptea la frig.

31 I will punish him, his family, and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring on them, on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and on the men of Judah all the doom that I have pronounced against them; but they did not heed.”’”

Îl voi pedepsi atât pe el, cât şi pe urmaşii lui şi pe slujitorii lui, din cauza nelegiuirilor lor. Voi aduce peste ei, peste locuitorii Ierusalimului şi peste poporul din Iuda, toate nenorocirile pe care le-am rostit împotriva lor şi cărora ei nu le-au dat atenţie.»“

32 T hen Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote on it at the instruction of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And besides, there were added to them many similar words.

Ieremia a luat un alt sul şi i l-a dat scribului Baruc, fiul lui Neria. Baruc a scris pe sul, după cum i-a dictat Ieremia, toate cuvintele care fuseseră scrise pe sulul pe care Iehoiachim, regele lui Iuda, îl arsese în foc. Pe acest al doilea sul au mai fost adăugate multe alte asemenea cuvinte.
