1 T hen Joshua rose early in the morning; and they set out from Acacia Grove and came to the Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they crossed over.

Giosuè si levò al mattino presto; partirono quindi da Scittim e arrivarono al Giordano, lui e tutti i figli d'Israele, e là si fermarono prima di attraversare.

2 S o it was, after three days, that the officers went through the camp;

Al termine di tre giorni, gli ufficiali passarono per tutto l'accampamento,

3 a nd they commanded the people, saying, “When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests, the Levites, bearing it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it.

e diedero al popolo quest'ordine, dicendo: «Quando vedrete l'arca del patto dell'Eterno, il vostro DIO, portata dai sacerdoti levitici, partirete dal vostro luogo e la seguirete.

4 Y et there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure. Do not come near it, that you may know the way by which you must go, for you have not passed this way before.”

Ma tra voi e L'arca vi sarà una distanza di circa duemila cubiti. Non avvicinatevi ad essa, affinché possiate riconoscere la via per la quale dovete andare, perché prima d'ora non siete mai passati per questa via».

5 A nd Joshua said to the people, “Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.”

E Giosuè disse al popolo: «Santificatevi, perché domani l'Eterno farà meraviglie in mezzo a voi».

6 T hen Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, “Take up the ark of the covenant and cross over before the people.” So they took up the ark of the covenant and went before the people.

Poi Giosuè parlò ai sacerdoti, dicendo: «Prendete l'arca del patto e passate davanti al popolo». Così essi presero l'arca del patto e si incamminarono davanti al popolo.

7 A nd the Lord said to Joshua, “This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.

Allora l'Eterno disse a Giosuè: «Oggi comincerò a renderti grande agli occhi di tutto Israele, affinché riconoscano che come fui con Mosè, così sarò con te.

8 Y ou shall command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, saying, ‘When you have come to the edge of the water of the Jordan, you shall stand in the Jordan.’”

Tu perciò da' quest'ordine ai sacerdoti che portano l'arca del patto, dicendo: "Quando sarete giunti ai margini delle acque del Giordano, vi fermerete nel Giordano"».

9 S o Joshua said to the children of Israel, “Come here, and hear the words of the Lord your God.”

Giosuè allora disse ai figli d'Israele: «Avvicinatevi e ascoltate le parole dell'Eterno, il vostro DIO».

10 A nd Joshua said, “By this you shall know that the living God is among you, and that He will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Hivites and the Perizzites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Jebusites:

Poi Giosuè disse: «Da questo riconoscerete che il Dio vivente è in mezzo a voi e che certamente scaccerà davanti a voi i Cananei, gli Hittei, gi Hivvei, i Perezei, i Ghirgasei, gli Amorei e i Gebusei:

11 B ehold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is crossing over before you into the Jordan.

ecco, l'arca del patto del Signore di tutta la terra sta per passare davanti a voi nel Giordano.

12 N ow therefore, take for yourselves twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one man from every tribe.

Or dunque prendete dodici uomini tra le tribú d'Israele, uno per ogni tribú.

13 A nd it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off, the waters that come down from upstream, and they shall stand as a heap.”

E avverrà che, non appena le piante dei piedi dei sacerdoti che portano l'arca dell'Eterno, il Signore di tutta la terra, si poseranno nelle acque del Giordano, le acque del Giordano saranno divise, e le acque che scendono dall'alto si fermeranno in un mucchio».

14 S o it was, when the people set out from their camp to cross over the Jordan, with the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people,

Così, quando il popolo levò le tende per passare il Giordano, i sacerdoti che portavano l'arca del patto camminavano davanti al popolo.

15 a nd as those who bore the ark came to the Jordan, and the feet of the priests who bore the ark dipped in the edge of the water (for the Jordan overflows all its banks during the whole time of harvest),

Or appena quei che portavano l'arca giunsero al Giordano e i piedi dei sacerdoti che portavano l'arca si immersero ai margini delle acque (il Giordano è in piena fin sopra le sue sponde per tutto il tempo della messe),

16 t hat the waters which came down from upstream stood still, and rose in a heap very far away at Adam, the city that is beside Zaretan. So the waters that went down into the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, failed, and were cut off; and the people crossed over opposite Jericho.

le acque che scendevano dall'alto si fermarono e si elevarono in un mucchio, fino molto al di sopra di Adam, la città che si trova presso Tsartan; così le acque che scendevano verso il mare dell'Arabah, il Mar Salato, furono interamente separate da esse; e il popolo passò di fronte a Gerico.

17 T hen the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan; and all Israel crossed over on dry ground, until all the people had crossed completely over the Jordan.

I sacerdoti che portavano l'arca del patto dell'Eterno si fermarono all'asciutto in mezzo al Giordano, mentre tutto Israele passava all'asciutto, finché tutto il popolo ebbe finito di attraversare il Giordano.
