1 A t that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus

In quel tempo Erode, il tetrarca, udí della fama di Gesú,

2 a nd said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.”

e disse ai suoi servi: «Costui è Giovanni Battista; egli è risuscitato dai morti e perciò le potenze soprannaturali operano in lui».

3 F or Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife.

Erode infatti, aveva arrestato Giovanni, lo aveva incatenato e messo in prigione, a causa di Erodiade, moglie di suo fratello Filippo.

4 B ecause John had said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”

Perché Giovanni gli diceva: «Non ti è lecito di convivere con lei!».

5 A nd although he wanted to put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

E, pur volendo farlo morire, egli temeva il popolo, che lo riteneva un profeta.

6 B ut when Herod’s birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod.

Ora, mentre si celebrava il compleanno di Erode, la figlia di Erodiade danzò in sua presenza e piacque a Erode,

7 T herefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.

tanto che egli le promise con giuramento di darle tutto ciò che gli avesse chiesto.

8 S o she, having been prompted by her mother, said, “Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter.”

Ed ella, istigata da sua madre, disse: «Dammi qui, su un piatto, la testa di Giovanni Battista».

9 A nd the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he commanded it to be given to her.

Il re ne fu contristato, ma a causa del giuramento e per riguardo degli invitati che erano con lui a tavola, comandò che le fosse data.

10 S o he sent and had John beheaded in prison.

Cosí mandò a far decapitare Giovanni Battista in prigione;

11 A nd his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.

e la sua testa fu portata su un piatto e data alla fanciulla; ed ella la portò a sua madre.

12 T hen his disciples came and took away the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus. Feeding the Five Thousand

Poi vennero i suoi discepoli, presero il corpo e lo seppellirono; in seguito essi andarono a riferire l'accaduto a Gesú.

13 W hen Jesus heard it, He departed from there by boat to a deserted place by Himself. But when the multitudes heard it, they followed Him on foot from the cities.

Quando Gesú ebbe udito ciò, partí di là su una barca e si ritirò in disparte, in un luogo deserto. E le folle, saputolo, lo seguirono a piedi dalle città.

14 A nd when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.

E Gesú, smontato dalla barca, vide una grande folla e ne ebbe compassione, e ne guarí gli infermi.

15 W hen it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food.”

Poi, facendosi sera, i suoi discepoli gli si accostarono, e gli dissero: «Questo luogo è deserto, ed è già tardi; licenzia dunque le folle affinché vadano per i villaggi a comprarsi da mangiare».

16 B ut Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

Ma Gesú disse loro: «Non è necessario che se ne vadano, date voi a loro da mangiare».

17 A nd they said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.”

Ed essi gli dissero: «Noi non abbiamo qui altro che cinque pani e due pesci».

18 H e said, “Bring them here to Me.”

Ed egli disse: «Portatemeli qua».

19 T hen He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes.

Comandò quindi che le folle si sedessero sull'erba; poi prese i cinque pani e i due pesci e, alzati gli occhi al cielo, li benedisse; spezzò i pani e li diede ai discepoli e i discepoli, alle folle.

20 S o they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained.

E tutti mangiarono e furono saziati poi i discepoli raccolsero i pezzi avanzati in dodici ceste piene.

21 N ow those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Jesus Walks on the Sea

Ora, coloro che avevano mangiato erano circa cinquemila uomini, senza contare le donne e i bambini.

22 I mmediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away.

Subito dopo Gesú costrinse i suoi discepoli a salire sulla barca e a precederlo all'altra riva, mentre egli licenziava le folle.

23 A nd when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there.

Dopo averle congedate, salí sul monte in disparte per pregare. E, fattosi sera, era là tutto solo.

24 B ut the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.

La barca intanto si trovava al largo, in mezzo al mare, ed era sbattuta dalle onde perché il vento era contrario.

25 N ow in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.

Alla quarta vigilia, della notte, Gesú andò verso di loro, camminando sul mare.

26 A nd when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear.

I discepoli, vedendolo camminare sul mare, si turbarono e dissero: «è un fantasma!». E si misero a gridare dalla paura;

27 B ut immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”

ma subito Gesú parlò loro, dicendo: «Rassicuratevi; sono io, non temete!».

28 A nd Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”

E Pietro, rispondendogli disse: «Signore, se sei tu, comandami di venire da te sulle acque».

29 S o He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.

Egli disse: «Vieni!» E Pietro, sceso dalla barca, camminò sulle acque, per venire da Gesú.

30 B ut when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”

Ma, vedendo il vento forte, ebbe paura e, cominciando ad affondare, gridò dicendo: «Signore, salvami!».

31 A nd immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

E subito Gesú stese la mano, lo prese e gli disse: «O uomo di poca fede, perché hai dubitato?».

32 A nd when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.

Poi, quando salirono in barca, il vento si acquetò.

33 T hen those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.” Many Touch Him and Are Made Well

Allora quelli che erano nella barca vennero e l'adorarono, dicendo: «Veramente tu sei il Figlio di Dio!».

34 W hen they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.

Poi, essendo passati all'altra riva, vennero nella regione di Gennesaret.

35 A nd when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent out into all that surrounding region, brought to Him all who were sick,

E gli uomini di quel luogo, avendolo riconosciuto, diffusero la notizia per tutta la regione circostante; e gli presentarono tutti i malati;

36 a nd begged Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched it were made perfectly well.

e lo pregarono che potessero toccare almeno il lembo della sua veste, e tutti quelli che lo toccarono furono perfettamente guariti.
