1 A t that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus

In quel tempo Erode il tetrarca udì la fama di Gesù

2 a nd said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.”

e disse ai suoi servitori: «Costui è Giovanni il battista! Egli è risuscitato dai morti; perciò agiscono in lui le potenze miracolose».

3 F or Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife.

Poiché Erode aveva arrestato Giovanni, lo aveva incatenato e messo in prigione a motivo di Erodiade, moglie di Filippo suo fratello;

4 B ecause John had said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”

Giovanni infatti gli diceva: «Non ti è lecito averla».

5 A nd although he wanted to put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

E benché desiderasse farlo morire, temeva la folla, perché lo considerava un profeta.

6 B ut when Herod’s birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod.

Giunto il compleanno di Erode, la figlia di Erodiade ballò nel convito e piacque a Erode;

7 T herefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.

ed egli promise con giuramento di darle tutto quello che avrebbe richiesto.

8 S o she, having been prompted by her mother, said, “Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter.”

Ella, spintavi da sua madre, disse: «Dammi qui, su un piatto, la testa di Giovanni il battista».

9 A nd the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he commanded it to be given to her.

Il re, sebbene rattristato, a motivo dei giuramenti e degli invitati comandò che le fosse data,

10 S o he sent and had John beheaded in prison.

e mandò a decapitare Giovanni in prigione.

11 A nd his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.

La sua testa fu portata su un piatto e data alla fanciulla, che la portò a sua madre.

12 T hen his disciples came and took away the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus. Feeding the Five Thousand

E i suoi discepoli andarono a prenderne il corpo e lo seppellirono; poi vennero a informare Gesù. Moltiplicazione dei pani per cinquemila uomini

13 W hen Jesus heard it, He departed from there by boat to a deserted place by Himself. But when the multitudes heard it, they followed Him on foot from the cities.

Udito ciò, Gesù si ritirò di là in barca verso un luogo deserto, in disparte; le folle, saputolo, lo seguirono a piedi dalle città.

14 A nd when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.

smontato dalla barca, vide una gran folla; ne ebbe compassione e ne guarì gli ammalati.

15 W hen it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food.”

Facendosi sera, i discepoli si avvicinarono a lui e gli dissero: «Il luogo è deserto e l’ora è già passata; congeda la folla, affinché possa andare nei villaggi a comprarsi da mangiare».

16 B ut Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

Ma {Gesù} disse loro: «Non hanno bisogno di andarsene; date loro voi da mangiare!»

17 A nd they said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.”

Essi gli risposero: «Non abbiamo qui altro che cinque pani e due pesci».

18 H e said, “Bring them here to Me.”

Egli disse: «Portatemeli qua».

19 T hen He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes.

Dopo aver ordinato alla folla di accomodarsi sull’erba, prese i cinque pani e i due pesci e, alzati gli occhi verso il cielo, pronunciò la benedizione; poi, spezzati i pani, li diede ai discepoli e i discepoli alla folla.

20 S o they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained.

Tutti mangiarono e furono sazi; e si raccolsero, dei pezzi avanzati, dodici ceste piene.

21 N ow those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Jesus Walks on the Sea

E quelli che avevano mangiato erano circa cinquemila uomini, oltre alle donne e ai bambini. Gesù cammina sul mare; guarigioni a Gennesaret

22 I mmediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away.

Subito dopo, obbligò i discepoli a salire sulla barca e a precederlo sull’altra riva, mentre egli avrebbe congedato la folla.

23 A nd when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there.

Dopo aver congedato la folla, salì sul monte in disparte a pregare. E, venuta la sera, rimase là da solo.

24 B ut the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.

Frattanto la barca, già di molti stadi lontana da terra, era sbattuta dalle onde perché il vento era contrario.

25 N ow in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.

Ma alla quarta vigilia della notte andò verso di loro, camminando sul mare.

26 A nd when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear.

E i discepoli, vedendolo camminare sul mare, si turbarono e dissero: «È un fantasma!» E dalla paura gridarono.

27 B ut immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”

Ma subito {Gesù} parlò loro e disse: «Coraggio, sono io; non abbiate paura!»

28 A nd Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”

Pietro gli rispose: «Signore, se sei tu, comandami di venire da te sull’acqua».

29 S o He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.

Egli disse: «Vieni!» E Pietro, sceso dalla barca, camminò sull’acqua e andò verso Gesù.

30 B ut when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”

Ma vedendo il vento {forte} ebbe paura e, cominciando ad affondare, gridò: «Signore, salvami!»

31 A nd immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

Subito Gesù, stesa la mano, lo afferrò e gli disse: «Uomo di poca fede, perché hai dubitato?»

32 A nd when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.

E, quando furono saliti sulla barca, il vento si calmò.

33 T hen those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.” Many Touch Him and Are Made Well

Allora quelli che erano nella barca lo adorarono, dicendo: «Veramente tu sei Figlio di Dio!»

34 W hen they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.

Passati all’altra riva, vennero nel paese di Gennesaret.

35 A nd when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent out into all that surrounding region, brought to Him all who were sick,

E la gente di quel luogo, riconosciuto Gesù, diffuse la notizia per tutta la regione circostante, e gli presentarono tutti i malati

36 a nd begged Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched it were made perfectly well.

e lo pregavano che lasciasse loro toccare almeno il lembo della sua veste; e tutti quelli che lo toccarono furono guariti.
