1 O n that day they read from the Book of Moses in the hearing of the people, and in it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever come into the assembly of God,

«In quel tempo si lesse in presenza del popolo il libro di Mosè, e vi si trovò scritto che l’Ammonita e il Moabita non debbono mai entrare nell’assemblea di Dio,

2 b ecause they had not met the children of Israel with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them. However, our God turned the curse into a blessing.

perché non erano venuti incontro ai figli d’Israele con pane e acqua e perché avevano comprato a loro danno Balaam, affinché li maledicesse; ma il nostro Dio convertì la maledizione in benedizione.

3 S o it was, when they had heard the Law, that they separated all the mixed multitude from Israel. The Reforms of Nehemiah

Quando il popolo udì la legge, separò da Israele tutti gli stranieri.

4 N ow before this, Eliashib the priest, having authority over the storerooms of the house of our God, was allied with Tobiah.

Prima di questo, il sacerdote Eliasib, responsabile delle camere del tempio del nostro Dio e parente di Tobia,

5 A nd he had prepared for him a large room, where previously they had stored the grain offerings, the frankincense, the articles, the tithes of grain, the new wine and oil, which were commanded to be given to the Levites and singers and gatekeepers, and the offerings for the priests.

aveva messo a disposizione di quest’ultimo una camera grande là dove, prima di allora si riponevano le offerte, l’incenso, gli utensili, la decima del grano, del vino e dell’olio, tutto ciò che spettava per legge ai Leviti, ai cantori, ai portinai, e la parte che se ne prelevava per i sacerdoti.

6 B ut during all this I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I had returned to the king. Then after certain days I obtained leave from the king,

Ma quando si faceva tutto questo, io non ero a Gerusalemme; perché l’anno trentaduesimo di Artaserse, re di Babilonia, ero tornato presso il re; e dopo qualche tempo, avendo ottenuto un congedo dal re,

7 a nd I came to Jerusalem and discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing a room for him in the courts of the house of God.

tornai a Gerusalemme, e mi accorsi del male che Eliasib aveva fatto per amore di Tobia, mettendo a sua disposizione una camera nei cortili della casa di Dio.

8 A nd it grieved me bitterly; therefore I threw all the household goods of Tobiah out of the room.

La cosa mi dispiacque molto, e feci gettare fuori dalla camera tutte le masserizie appartenenti a Tobia.

9 T hen I commanded them to cleanse the rooms; and I brought back into them the articles of the house of God, with the grain offering and the frankincense.

Poi ordinai che si purificassero quelle camere, e vi feci ricollocare gli utensili della casa di Dio, le offerte e l’incenso.

10 I also realized that the portions for the Levites had not been given them; for each of the Levites and the singers who did the work had gone back to his field.

«Seppi pure che le porzioni dovute ai Leviti non erano state date, e che i Leviti e i cantori, incaricati del servizio, se ne erano fuggiti, ciascuno alla sua terra.

11 S o I contended with the rulers, and said, “Why is the house of God forsaken?” And I gathered them together and set them in their place.

Io ammonii i magistrati e dissi loro: “Perché la casa di Dio è stata abbandonata?” Poi radunai i Leviti e i cantori e li ristabilii nei loro uffici.

12 T hen all Judah brought the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil to the storehouse.

Allora tutto Giuda portò nei magazzini le decime del frumento, del vino e dell’olio.

13 A nd I appointed as treasurers over the storehouse Shelemiah the priest and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah; and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were considered faithful, and their task was to distribute to their brethren.

Affidai la sorveglianza dei magazzini al sacerdote Selemia, allo scriba Sadoc e a Pedaia, uno dei Leviti; ai quali aggiunsi Anan figlio di Zaccur, figlio di Mattania, perché erano considerati uomini fedeli. Il loro compito era di fare le ripartizioni fra i loro fratelli.

14 R emember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its services!

Ricòrdati per questo di me, o Dio mio, e non cancellare quello che ho compiuto fedelmente per la casa del mio Dio e per il suo servizio!

15 I n those days I saw people in Judah treading wine presses on the Sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys with wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned them about the day on which they were selling provisions.

«In quei giorni osservai in Giuda alcune persone intente a pigiare l’uva in giorno di sabato, altre a portare, caricandolo sugli asini, grano e anche vino, uva, fichi e ogni sorta di cose, che facevano giungere a Gerusalemme in giorno di sabato. Io li rimproverai a motivo del giorno in cui vendevano le loro derrate.

16 M en of Tyre dwelt there also, who brought in fish and all kinds of goods, and sold them on the Sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.

C’erano anche persone di Tiro, stabilite a Gerusalemme, che portavano del pesce e ogni sorta di cose, e le vendevano ai figli di Giuda in giorno di sabato, e a Gerusalemme.

17 T hen I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, “What evil thing is this that you do, by which you profane the Sabbath day?

Allora rimproverai i notabili di Giuda e dissi loro: “Che significa questa cattiva azione che fate, profanando il giorno del sabato?

18 D id not your fathers do thus, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Yet you bring added wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”

I nostri padri non fecero proprio così? Il nostro Dio fece, per questo, piombare su di noi e su questa città tutti questi mali. E voi accrescete l’ira ardente contro Israele, profanando il sabato!”

19 S o it was, at the gates of Jerusalem, as it began to be dark before the Sabbath, that I commanded the gates to be shut, and charged that they must not be opened till after the Sabbath. Then I posted some of my servants at the gates, so that no burdens would be brought in on the Sabbath day.

Non appena le porte di Gerusalemme cominciarono a essere nell’ombra, prima del sabato, ordinai che queste fossero chiuse e che non si riaprissero fino a dopo il sabato; e collocai alcuni dei miei servi alle porte, affinché nessun carico entrasse in città durante il sabato.

20 N ow the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice.

Così i mercanti e i venditori di merci di ogni genere una o due volte passarono la notte fuori di Gerusalemme.

21 T hen I warned them, and said to them, “Why do you spend the night around the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you!” From that time on they came no more on the Sabbath.

Allora li rimproverai e dissi loro: “Perché passate la notte davanti alle mura? Se lo rifate, vi farò arrestare”. Da quel momento non vennero più di sabato.

22 A nd I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should go and guard the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of Your mercy!

Ordinai anche ai Leviti di purificarsi e venire a custodire le porte per santificare il giorno del sabato. Anche per questo ricòrdati di me, o mio Dio, e abbi pietà di me secondo la grandezza della tua misericordia!

23 I n those days I also saw Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab.

«In quei giorni vidi pure dei Giudei che avevano sposato donne di Asdod, di Ammon e di Moab.

24 A nd half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and could not speak the language of Judah, but spoke according to the language of one or the other people.

La metà dei loro figli parlava l’asdodeo, ma non sapeva parlare la lingua dei Giudei; conosceva soltanto la lingua di questo o quest’altro popolo.

25 S o I contended with them and cursed them, struck some of them and pulled out their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, “You shall not give your daughters as wives to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons or yourselves.

Li rimproverai, li maledissi, ne picchiai alcuni, strappai loro i capelli, e li feci giurare nel nome di Dio che non avrebbero dato le loro figlie ai figli di costoro, e che non avrebbero preso le figlie di quelli per i loro figli né per se stessi.

26 D id not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? Yet among many nations there was no king like him, who was beloved of his God; and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless pagan women caused even him to sin.

E dissi: “Salomone, re d’Israele, non peccò forse proprio in questo? Eppure, fra le molte nazioni, non ci fu re simile a lui; era amato dal suo Dio, e Dio lo aveva fatto re di tutto Israele; tuttavia le donne straniere fecero peccare anche lui.

27 S hould we then hear of your doing all this great evil, transgressing against our God by marrying pagan women?”

Allora dovremmo forse permettervi di commettere un male altrettanto grande, e così divenire infedeli al nostro Dio, prendendo mogli straniere?”

28 A nd one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was a son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite; therefore I drove him from me.

Uno dei figli di Ioiada, figlio di Eliasib, il sommo sacerdote, era genero di Samballat, il Coronita; e io lo cacciai via da me.

29 R emember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.

Ricòrdati di loro, o mio Dio, poiché hanno contaminato il sacerdozio e il patto dei sacerdoti e dei Leviti!

30 T hus I cleansed them of everything pagan. I also assigned duties to the priests and the Levites, each to his service,

Così purificai il popolo da ogni elemento straniero, e ristabilii i vari servizi dei sacerdoti e dei Leviti, assegnando a ciascuno il suo lavoro.

31 a nd to bringing the wood offering and the firstfruits at appointed times. Remember me, O my God, for good!

Diedi anche disposizioni circa l’offerta della legna ai tempi stabiliti e circa le primizie. Ricòrdati di me, mio Dio, per farmi del bene!».
