1 “ Now these are the judgments which you shall set before them:

«Queste sono le leggi che tu esporrai davanti a loro:

2 I f you buy a Hebrew servant, he shall serve six years; and in the seventh he shall go out free and pay nothing.

Se compri uno schiavo ebreo, egli ti servirà per sei anni, ma il settimo se ne andrà libero, senza pagare nulla.

3 I f he comes in by himself, he shall go out by himself; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him.

Se è venuto solo, se ne andrà solo; se aveva moglie, la moglie se ne andrà con lui.

4 I f his master has given him a wife, and she has borne him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master’s, and he shall go out by himself.

Se il suo padrone gli dà moglie e questa gli partorisce figli e figlie, la moglie e i figli di lei saranno del padrone, ed egli se andrà solo.

5 B ut if the servant plainly says, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,’

Ma se lo schiavo fa questa dichiarazione: “Io amo il mio padrone, mia moglie e i miei figli; io non voglio andarmene libero”;

6 t hen his master shall bring him to the judges. He shall also bring him to the door, or to the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall serve him forever.

allora il suo padrone lo farà comparire davanti a Dio, lo farà accostare alla porta o allo stipite; poi il suo padrone gli forerà l’orecchio con una lesina ed egli lo servirà per sempre.

7 “ And if a man sells his daughter to be a female slave, she shall not go out as the male slaves do.

Se uno vende la propria figlia come schiava, questa non se ne andrà come se ne vanno gli schiavi.

8 I f she does not please her master, who has betrothed her to himself, then he shall let her be redeemed. He shall have no right to sell her to a foreign people, since he has dealt deceitfully with her.

Se lei non piace al suo padrone, che si era proposto di prenderla in moglie, deve permettere che sia riscattata; ma non avrà il diritto di venderla a gente straniera, dopo esserle stato infedele.

9 A nd if he has betrothed her to his son, he shall deal with her according to the custom of daughters.

Se la dà in sposa a suo figlio, dovrà trattarla secondo il diritto delle figlie.

10 I f he takes another wife, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, and her marriage rights.

Se prende un’altra moglie, non toglierà alla prima né il vitto, né il vestire, né la coabitazione.

11 A nd if he does not do these three for her, then she shall go out free, without paying money. The Law Concerning Violence

Se non le fa queste tre cose, lei se ne andrà senza pagare nessun prezzo. Danni alle persone e relative sanzioni

12 “ He who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death.

«Chi colpisce un uomo a morte, dev’essere messo a morte.

13 H owever, if he did not lie in wait, but God delivered him into his hand, then I will appoint for you a place where he may flee.

Se non gli ha teso agguato, ma lo uccide involontariamente, io stabilirò un luogo dove egli si possa rifugiare.

14 “ But if a man acts with premeditation against his neighbor, to kill him by treachery, you shall take him from My altar, that he may die.

Se qualcuno insidia e uccide il suo prossimo con premeditazione, tu lo strapperai anche dal mio altare, per farlo morire.

15 “ And he who strikes his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.

«Chi percuote suo padre o sua madre deve essere messo a morte.

16 “ He who kidnaps a man and sells him, or if he is found in his hand, shall surely be put to death.

Chi rapisce un uomo – sia che poi lo abbia venduto sia che lo tenga ancora prigioniero – dev’essere messo a morte.

17 “ And he who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.

Chi maledice suo padre o sua madre dev’essere messo a morte.

18 “ If men contend with each other, and one strikes the other with a stone or with his fist, and he does not die but is confined to his bed,

«Se degli uomini litigano e uno percuote l’altro con una pietra o con il pugno, e questo non muore, ma deve mettersi a letto,

19 i f he rises again and walks about outside with his staff, then he who struck him shall be acquitted. He shall only pay for the loss of his time, and shall provide for him to be thoroughly healed.

se poi si alza e può camminare fuori appoggiato al suo bastone, colui che lo percosse sarà assolto; soltanto, lo indennizzerà del tempo che ha perduto e lo farà curare fino a guarigione compiuta.

20 “ And if a man beats his male or female servant with a rod, so that he dies under his hand, he shall surely be punished.

Se uno bastona il suo schiavo o la sua schiava fino a farli morire sotto i colpi, il padrone deve essere punito;

21 N otwithstanding, if he remains alive a day or two, he shall not be punished; for he is his property.

ma se sopravvivono un giorno o due, non sarà punito, perché sono denaro suo.

22 “ If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no harm follows, he shall surely be punished accordingly as the woman’s husband imposes on him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.

Se durante una rissa qualcuno colpisce una donna incinta e questa partorisce senza che ne segua altro danno, colui che l’ha colpita sarà condannato all’ammenda che il marito della donna gli imporrà; e la pagherà come determineranno i giudici;

23 B ut if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life,

ma se ne segue danno, darai vita per vita,

24 e ye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

occhio per occhio, dente per dente, mano per mano, piede per piede,

25 b urn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

scottatura per scottatura, ferita per ferita, contusione per contusione.

26 “ If a man strikes the eye of his male or female servant, and destroys it, he shall let him go free for the sake of his eye.

Se uno colpisce l’occhio del suo schiavo o l’occhio della sua schiava e glielo fa perdere, li lascerà andare liberi in compenso dell’occhio perduto.

27 A nd if he knocks out the tooth of his male or female servant, he shall let him go free for the sake of his tooth. Animal Control Laws

Se fa cadere un dente al suo schiavo o un dente alla sua schiava, li lascerà andare liberi in compenso del dente perduto.

28 “ If an ox gores a man or a woman to death, then the ox shall surely be stoned, and its flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be acquitted.

Se un bue ferisce a morte, con le corna, un uomo o una donna, il bue dovrà essere lapidato, non se ne mangerà la carne e il padrone del bue sarà assolto.

29 B ut if the ox tended to thrust with its horn in times past, and it has been made known to his owner, and he has not kept it confined, so that it has killed a man or a woman, the ox shall be stoned and its owner also shall be put to death.

Però, se già da tempo il bue era solito attaccare e il padrone è stato avvertito, ma non lo ha tenuto rinchiuso e il bue ha ucciso un uomo o una donna, il bue sarà lapidato e il suo padrone pure sarà messo a morte.

30 I f there is imposed on him a sum of money, then he shall pay to redeem his life, whatever is imposed on him.

Se gli s’impone un risarcimento, egli dovrà pagare, come riscatto della propria vita, tutto quello che gli sarà imposto.

31 W hether it has gored a son or gored a daughter, according to this judgment it shall be done to him.

Se il bue attacca un figlio o una figlia, gli si applicherà questa medesima legge.

32 I f the ox gores a male or female servant, he shall give to their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned.

Se il bue attacca uno schiavo o una schiava, il padrone del bue pagherà al padrone dello schiavo trenta sicli d’argento e il bue sarà lapidato.

33 “ And if a man opens a pit, or if a man digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or a donkey falls in it,

Se uno toglie il coperchio a una cisterna, o se uno scava una cisterna e non le fa un coperchio, e poi un bue o un asino vi cade dentro,

34 t he owner of the pit shall make it good; he shall give money to their owner, but the dead animal shall be his.

il padrone della cisterna risarcirà il danno: pagherà in denaro il valore della bestia al padrone e la bestia morta sarà sua.

35 “ If one man’s ox hurts another’s, so that it dies, then they shall sell the live ox and divide the money from it; and the dead ox they shall also divide.

Se il bue di un uomo ferisce mortalmente il bue di un altro, si venderà il bue vivo e se ne dividerà il prezzo; anche il bue morto sarà diviso fra loro.

36 O r if it was known that the ox tended to thrust in time past, and its owner has not kept it confined, he shall surely pay ox for ox, and the dead animal shall be his own.

Se poi era noto che quel bue aveva l’abitudine di attaccare e il suo padrone non lo ha tenuto rinchiuso, questi dovrà pagare bue per bue, e la bestia morta sarà sua.
