1 “ Ephraim feeds on the wind, And pursues the east wind; He daily increases lies and desolation. Also they make a covenant with the Assyrians, And oil is carried to Egypt.

Efraim si pasce di vento e va dietro al vento orientale. Ogni giorno moltiplica le menzogne e le violenze; fa alleanza con l’Assiria e porta olio in Egitto.

2 “ The Lord also brings a charge against Judah, And will punish Jacob according to his ways; According to his deeds He will recompense him.

Il Signore è anche in lite con Giuda, e punirà Giacobbe per la sua condotta, gli renderà secondo le sue opere.

3 H e took his brother by the heel in the womb, And in his strength he struggled with God.

«Nel grembo materno egli prese il fratello per il calcagno e, nel suo vigore, lottò con Dio.

4 Y es, he struggled with the Angel and prevailed; He wept, and sought favor from Him. He found Him in Bethel, And there He spoke to us—

lLottò con l’Angelo e restò vincitore; egli pianse e lo supplicò. A Betel lo trovò, là egli parlò con noi.

5 T hat is, the Lord God of hosts. The Lord is His memorable name.

Il Signore è Dio degli eserciti; il suo nome è il Signore.

6 S o you, by the help of your God, return; Observe mercy and justice, And wait on your God continually.

Tu, dunque, torna al tuo Dio, pratica la misericordia e la giustizia, e spera sempre nel tuo Dio.

7 “ A cunning Canaanite! Deceitful scales are in his hand; He loves to oppress.

«Efraim è un Cananeo che tiene in mano bilance false; egli ama ingannare.

8 A nd Ephraim said, ‘Surely I have become rich, I have found wealth for myself; In all my labors They shall find in me no iniquity that is sin.’

Efraim dice: “È vero, io mi sono arricchito, mi sono acquistato dei beni; però in tutti i frutti delle mie fatiche non si troverà nessuna mia iniquità, niente di peccaminoso”.

9 “ But I am the Lord your God, Ever since the land of Egypt; I will again make you dwell in tents, As in the days of the appointed feast.

Ma io sono il Signore, il tuo Dio, fin dal paese d’Egitto; io ti farò ancora abitare in tende, come nei giorni di solennità.

10 I have also spoken by the prophets, And have multiplied visions; I have given symbols through the witness of the prophets.”

Ho parlato ai profeti, ho moltiplicato le visioni, e per mezzo dei profeti ho proposto parabole.

11 T hough Gilead has idols— Surely they are vanity— Though they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal, Indeed their altars shall be heaps in the furrows of the field.

Se Galaad è vanità, sarà ridotto in nulla. A Ghilgal sacrificano buoi; così i loro altari saranno come mucchi di pietre nei solchi dei campi.

12 J acob fled to the country of Syria; Israel served for a spouse, And for a wife he tended sheep.

Giacobbe fuggì nella pianura di Aram, Israele servì per una moglie; per una moglie si fece guardiano di greggi.

13 B y a prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt, And by a prophet he was preserved.

Mediante un profeta il Signore condusse Israele fuori d’Egitto; Israele fu custodito da un profeta.

14 E phraim provoked Him to anger most bitterly; Therefore his Lord will leave the guilt of his bloodshed upon him, And return his reproach upon him.

Efraim ha provocato amaramente il suo Signore; perciò questi gli farà ricadere addosso il sangue che ha versato e farà ricadere su di lui le sue abominazioni.
