1 “ Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; Sit on the ground without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans! For you shall no more be called Tender and delicate.

«Scendi e siedi sulla polvere, vergine figlia di Babilonia! Siediti in terra, senza trono, figlia dei Caldei! Infatti non sarai più chiamata la delicata, la voluttuosa.

2 T ake the millstones and grind meal. Remove your veil, Take off the skirt, Uncover the thigh, Pass through the rivers.

Metti mano alla mola e macina farina; lèvati il velo, àlzati lo strascico, scopriti la gamba e passa i fiumi!

3 Y our nakedness shall be uncovered, Yes, your shame will be seen; I will take vengeance, And I will not arbitrate with a man.”

Si scopra la tua nudità, si veda la tua vergogna; io farò vendetta e non risparmierò anima viva.

4 A s for our Redeemer, the Lord of hosts is His name, The Holy One of Israel.

Il nostro Redentore si chiama Signore degli eserciti, il Santo d’Israele.

5 “ Sit in silence, and go into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans; For you shall no longer be called The Lady of Kingdoms.

Siediti in silenzio e va’ nelle tenebre, figlia dei Caldei, poiché non sarai più chiamata la signora dei regni.

6 I was angry with My people; I have profaned My inheritance, And given them into your hand. You showed them no mercy; On the elderly you laid your yoke very heavily.

Io mi adirai contro il mio popolo, profanai la mia eredità e li diedi in mano tua; tu non avesti per essi alcuna pietà; facesti gravare duramente il tuo giogo sul vecchio,

7 A nd you said, ‘I shall be a lady forever,’ So that you did not take these things to heart, Nor remember the latter end of them.

e dicesti: “Io sarò signora per sempre”. Non prendesti a cuore e non immaginasti la fine di tutto questo.

8 “ Therefore hear this now, you who are given to pleasures, Who dwell securely, Who say in your heart, ‘I am, and there is no one else besides me; I shall not sit as a widow, Nor shall I know the loss of children’;

Ora ascolta questo, o voluttuosa, che abiti al sicuro e dici in cuor tuo: “Io, e nessun altro all’infuori di me; io non rimarrò mai vedova e non conoscerò privazione di figli”;

9 B ut these two things shall come to you In a moment, in one day: The loss of children, and widowhood. They shall come upon you in their fullness Because of the multitude of your sorceries, For the great abundance of your enchantments.

ma queste due cose ti avverranno in un attimo, in uno stesso giorno: privazione di figli e vedovanza; ti piomberanno addosso tutte assieme, nonostante la moltitudine dei tuoi sortilegi e la grande abbondanza dei tuoi incantesimi.

10 “ For you have trusted in your wickedness; You have said, ‘No one sees me’; Your wisdom and your knowledge have warped you; And you have said in your heart, ‘I am, and there is no one else besides me.’

Tu ti fidavi della tua malizia e dicevi: “Nessuno mi vede”; la tua saggezza e la tua scienza ti hanno sviata e tu dicevi in cuor tuo: “Io, e nessun altro fuori di me”.

11 T herefore evil shall come upon you; You shall not know from where it arises. And trouble shall fall upon you; You will not be able to put it off. And desolation shall come upon you suddenly, Which you shall not know.

Ma verrà sopra di te un male che non saprai come scongiurare; ti piomberà addosso una calamità che non potrai allontanare con alcuna espiazione; ti cadrà improvvisamente addosso una rovina che non potrai prevedere.

12 “ Stand now with your enchantments And the multitude of your sorceries, In which you have labored from your youth— Perhaps you will be able to profit, Perhaps you will prevail.

Sta’ pure con i tuoi incantesimi e con i tuoi numerosi sortilegi, nei quali ti sei affaticata fin dalla tua giovinezza! Forse potrai trarne profitto, forse riuscirai a incutere terrore.

13 Y ou are wearied in the multitude of your counsels; Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, And the monthly prognosticators Stand up and save you From what shall come upon you.

Tu sei stanca di tutte le tue consultazioni; si alzino dunque quelli che misurano il cielo, che osservano le stelle, che fanno pronostici a ogni novilunio; ti salvino essi dalle cose che ti piomberanno addosso!

14 B ehold, they shall be as stubble, The fire shall burn them; They shall not deliver themselves From the power of the flame; It shall not be a coal to be warmed by, Nor a fire to sit before!

Ecco, essi sono come stoppia; il fuoco li consuma; non salveranno la loro vita dalla violenza della fiamma; non ne rimarrà brace a cui scaldarsi, né fuoco davanti al quale sedersi.

15 T hus shall they be to you With whom you have labored, Your merchants from your youth; They shall wander each one to his quarter. No one shall save you.

Così sarà la sorte di quelli intorno a cui ti sei affaticata. Quelli che hanno trafficato con te fin dalla tua giovinezza andranno senza meta ognuno per conto suo e non ci sarà nessuno che ti salvi.
