1 T he Lord also spoke to Joshua, saying,

Poi il Signore disse a Giosuè: «Parla ai figli d’Israele e di’ loro:

2 “ Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Appoint for yourselves cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you through Moses,

“Stabilite le città di rifugio, delle quali vi parlai per mezzo di Mosè,

3 t hat the slayer who kills a person accidentally or unintentionally may flee there; and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.

affinché l’omicida che avrà ucciso qualcuno senza averne l’intenzione, possa mettersi al sicuro; esse vi serviranno di rifugio contro il vendicatore del sangue.

4 A nd when he flees to one of those cities, and stands at the entrance of the gate of the city, and declares his case in the hearing of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city as one of them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.

L’omicida fuggirà in una di quelle città; e, fermatosi all’ingresso della porta della città, esporrà il suo caso agli anziani di quella città; questi lo accoglieranno presso di loro dentro la città, gli daranno una dimora, ed egli si stabilirà fra loro.

5 T hen if the avenger of blood pursues him, they shall not deliver the slayer into his hand, because he struck his neighbor unintentionally, but did not hate him beforehand.

E se il vendicatore del sangue lo inseguirà, essi non gli daranno nelle mani l’omicida, poiché ha ucciso il prossimo senza averne l’intenzione, senza averlo odiato prima.

6 A nd he shall dwell in that city until he stands before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the one who is high priest in those days. Then the slayer may return and come to his own city and his own house, to the city from which he fled.’”

L’omicida rimarrà in quella città finché, alla morte del sommo sacerdote che sarà in funzione in quei giorni, comparirà in giudizio davanti alla comunità. Allora l’omicida potrà tornarsene e rientrare nella sua città e nella sua casa, nella città da cui era fuggito”».

7 S o they appointed Kedesh in Galilee, in the mountains of Naphtali, Shechem in the mountains of Ephraim, and Kirjath Arba (which is Hebron) in the mountains of Judah.

Essi dunque consacrarono Chedes in Galilea nella regione montuosa di Neftali, Sichem nella regione montuosa di Efraim e Chiriat-Arba, cioè Ebron, nella regione montuosa di Giuda.

8 A nd on the other side of the Jordan, by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness on the plain, from the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead, from the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan, from the tribe of Manasseh.

E di là dal Giordano, a oriente di Gerico, scelsero, nella tribù di Ruben: Beser, nel deserto, nell’altopiano; Ramot, in Galaad, nella tribù di Gad, e Golan, in Basan, nella tribù di Manasse.

9 T hese were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel and for the stranger who dwelt among them, that whoever killed a person accidentally might flee there, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood until he stood before the congregation.

Queste furono le città assegnate a tutti i figli d’Israele e allo straniero residente fra loro, affinché chiunque avesse ucciso qualcuno involontariamente potesse rifugiarvisi e non avesse a morire per mano del vendicatore del sangue, prima di essere comparso davanti alla comunità.
