1 T hen Zophar the Naamathite answered and said:

2 “ Therefore my anxious thoughts make me answer, Because of the turmoil within me.

3 I have heard the rebuke that reproaches me, And the spirit of my understanding causes me to answer.

Ho udito rimproveri che mi fanno oltraggio; ma lo spirito mio darà una risposta assennata.

4 “ Do you not know this of old, Since man was placed on earth,

Non lo sai tu che in ogni tempo, da che l’uomo è stato posto sulla terra,

5 T hat the triumphing of the wicked is short, And the joy of the hypocrite is but for a moment?

il trionfo dei malvagi è breve e la gioia degli empi non dura che un istante?

6 T hough his haughtiness mounts up to the heavens, And his head reaches to the clouds,

Anche se la sua altezza giungesse fino al cielo, il suo capo toccasse le nubi,

7 Y et he will perish forever like his own refuse; Those who have seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’

l’empio perirà per sempre come lo sterco suo; quelli che lo vedevano diranno: “Dov’è?”

8 H e will fly away like a dream, and not be found; Yes, he will be chased away like a vision of the night.

Se ne volerà via come un sogno, non si troverà più; si dileguerà come una visione notturna.

9 T he eye that saw him will see him no more, Nor will his place behold him anymore.

L’occhio che lo guardava cesserà di vederlo e la sua casa più non lo scorgerà.

10 H is children will seek the favor of the poor, And his hands will restore his wealth.

I suoi figli si raccomanderanno ai poveri, le sue mani restituiranno la sua ricchezza.

11 H is bones are full of his youthful vigor, But it will lie down with him in the dust.

Il vigore giovanile che gli riempiva le ossa sarà nella polvere con lui.

12 “ Though evil is sweet in his mouth, And he hides it under his tongue,

Il male è dolce alla sua bocca, se lo nasconde sotto la lingua,

13 T hough he spares it and does not forsake it, But still keeps it in his mouth,

lo conserva, non lo lascia andare giù, lo trattiene sotto al suo palato;

14 Y et his food in his stomach turns sour; It becomes cobra venom within him.

ma il cibo gli si trasforma nelle viscere, gli diventa in corpo veleno d’aspide.

15 H e swallows down riches And vomits them up again; God casts them out of his belly.

Ha trangugiato ricchezze e le vomiterà; Dio stesso gliele ricaccerà dal ventre.

16 H e will suck the poison of cobras; The viper’s tongue will slay him.

Ha succhiato veleno d’aspide, la lingua della vipera lo ucciderà.

17 H e will not see the streams, The rivers flowing with honey and cream.

Non godrà più la vista di acque perenni, né di rivi fluenti di miele e di latte.

18 H e will restore that for which he labored, And will not swallow it down; From the proceeds of business He will get no enjoyment.

Renderà i suoi frutti, e non li mangerà; saranno pari alla ricchezza dei suoi guadagni, e non ne godrà.

19 F or he has oppressed and forsaken the poor, He has violently seized a house which he did not build.

Perché ha oppresso e abbandonato il povero, si è impadronito di case che non aveva costruite;

20 “ Because he knows no quietness in his heart, He will not save anything he desires.

perché la sua ingordigia non conobbe limiti, egli non salverà nulla di ciò che ha tanto desiderato.

21 N othing is left for him to eat; Therefore his well-being will not last.

La sua voracità non risparmiava nulla, perciò il suo benessere non durerà.

22 I n his self-sufficiency he will be in distress; Every hand of misery will come against him.

Nel colmo dell’abbondanza, si troverà in miseria; la mano di chiunque ebbe a soffrire tormenti si alzerà contro di lui.

23 W hen he is about to fill his stomach, God will cast on him the fury of His wrath, And will rain it on him while he is eating.

Quando starà per riempirsi il ventre, Dio manderà contro di lui la sua ira ardente; gliela farà piovere addosso per servirgli da cibo.

24 H e will flee from the iron weapon; A bronze bow will pierce him through.

Se scampa alle armi di ferro, lo trafigge l’arco di bronzo.

25 I t is drawn, and comes out of the body; Yes, the glittering point comes out of his gall. Terrors come upon him;

Si strappa la freccia, essa gli esce dal corpo, la punta sfolgorante gli viene fuori dal fiele, lo assalgono i terrori della morte.

26 T otal darkness is reserved for his treasures. An unfanned fire will consume him; It shall go ill with him who is left in his tent.

Buio profondo è riservato ai suoi tesori; lo consumerà un fuoco non attizzato dall’uomo, che divorerà quel che resta nella sua tenda.

27 T he heavens will reveal his iniquity, And the earth will rise up against him.

Il cielo rivelerà la sua iniquità, la terra insorgerà contro di lui.

28 T he increase of his house will depart, And his goods will flow away in the day of His wrath.

Le rendite della sua casa se ne andranno, portate via nel giorno dell’ira di Dio.

29 T his is the portion from God for a wicked man, The heritage appointed to him by God.”

Tale la parte che Dio riserva all’empio, tale l’eredità che Dio gli destina».
