1 “ O you children of Benjamin, Gather yourselves to flee from the midst of Jerusalem! Blow the trumpet in Tekoa, And set up a signal-fire in Beth Haccerem; For disaster appears out of the north, And great destruction.

«Figli di Beniamino, cercate un rifugio lontano da Gerusalemme; suonate la tromba in Tecoa; innalzate un segnale su Bet-Cherem, perché dal settentrione avanza una calamità, una grande rovina.

2 I have likened the daughter of Zion To a lovely and delicate woman.

La bella, la voluttuosa figlia di Sion, io la distruggo!

3 T he shepherds with their flocks shall come to her. They shall pitch their tents against her all around. Each one shall pasture in his own place.”

Verso di lei vengono dei pastori con le loro greggi; essi piantano le loro tende intorno a lei; ognuno d’essi bruca dal suo lato.

4 “ Prepare war against her; Arise, and let us go up at noon. Woe to us, for the day goes away, For the shadows of the evening are lengthening.

Preparate l’attacco contro di lei; alzatevi, saliamo in pieno mezzogiorno! Guai a noi, perché il giorno declina e le ombre della sera si allungano!

5 A rise, and let us go by night, And let us destroy her palaces.”

Alzatevi, saliamo di notte e distruggiamo i suoi palazzi!»

6 F or thus has the Lord of hosts said: “Cut down trees, And build a mound against Jerusalem. This is the city to be punished. She is full of oppression in her midst.

Infatti così parla il Signore degli eserciti: «Abbattete i suoi alberi ed elevate un bastione contro Gerusalemme; quella è la città che deve essere punita: dappertutto, in mezzo a lei, non c’è che oppressione.

7 A s a fountain wells up with water, So she wells up with her wickedness. Violence and plundering are heard in her. Before Me continually are grief and wounds.

Come un pozzo fa scaturire le sue acque, così essa fa scaturire la sua malvagità; in lei non si sente parlare che di violenza e di rovina; davanti a me stanno continuamente sofferenze e piaghe.

8 B e instructed, O Jerusalem, Lest My soul depart from you; Lest I make you desolate, A land not inhabited.”

Correggiti, Gerusalemme, affinché io non mi allontani da te e non faccia di te un deserto, una terra disabitata!»

9 T hus says the Lord of hosts: “They shall thoroughly glean as a vine the remnant of Israel; As a grape-gatherer, put your hand back into the branches.”

Così parla il Signore degli eserciti: «Il resto d’Israele sarà completamente racimolato come una vigna; ripassa con la mano, come fa il vendemmiatore sui tralci.

10 T o whom shall I speak and give warning, That they may hear? Indeed their ear is uncircumcised, And they cannot give heed. Behold, the word of the Lord is a reproach to them; They have no delight in it.

A chi parlerò, chi prenderò come testimone perché mi ascolti? Ecco, il loro orecchio è incirconciso, essi sono incapaci di prestare attenzione; ecco, la parola del Signore è diventata per loro un obbrobrio, non vi trovano più nessun piacere.

11 T herefore I am full of the fury of the Lord. I am weary of holding it in. “I will pour it out on the children outside, And on the assembly of young men together; For even the husband shall be taken with the wife, The aged with him who is full of days.

Ma io sono pieno del furore del Signore; sono stanco di contenermi. Rivèrsalo sui bambini per la strada e sui giovani riuniti assieme; poiché il marito e la moglie, il vecchio e l’uomo carico d’anni saranno presi tutti insieme.

12 A nd their houses shall be turned over to others, Fields and wives together; For I will stretch out My hand Against the inhabitants of the land,” says the Lord.

Le loro case saranno passate ad altri, così pure i loro campi e le loro mogli, poiché io stenderò la mia mano sugli abitanti del paese», dice il Signore.

13 “ Because from the least of them even to the greatest of them, Everyone is given to covetousness; And from the prophet even to the priest, Everyone deals falsely.

«Infatti, dal più piccolo al più grande, sono tutti quanti avidi di guadagno; dal profeta al sacerdote, tutti praticano la menzogna.

14 T hey have also healed the hurt of My people slightly, Saying, ‘Peace, peace!’ When there is no peace.

Essi curano alla leggera la piaga del mio popolo; dicono: “Pace, pace”, mentre pace non c’è.

15 W ere they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No! They were not at all ashamed; Nor did they know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; At the time I punish them, They shall be cast down,” says the Lord.

Saranno confusi perché commettono delle abominazioni. Non si vergognano affatto, non sanno che cosa sia arrossire, perciò cadranno fra quelli che cadono; quando io li visiterò saranno abbattuti», dice il Signore.

16 T hus says the Lord: “Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it. ’

Così dice il Signore: «Fermatevi sulle vie e guardate, domandate quali siano i sentieri antichi, dove sia la buona strada, e incamminatevi per essa; voi troverete riposo alle anime vostre! Ma quelli rispondono: “Non c’incammineremo per essa!”

17 A lso, I set watchmen over you, saying, ‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’ But they said, ‘We will not listen.’

Io ho messo delle sentinelle per voi: “State attenti al suono della tromba!” Ma quelli rispondono: “Non staremo attenti”.

18 T herefore hear, you nations, And know, O congregation, what is among them.

Perciò ascoltate, nazioni! Sappiate, comunità dei popoli, quello che avverrà loro.

19 H ear, O earth! Behold, I will certainly bring calamity on this people— The fruit of their thoughts, Because they have not heeded My words Nor My law, but rejected it.

Ascolta, terra! Ecco, io faccio venire su questo popolo una calamità, frutto dei loro pensieri; perché non sono stati attenti alle mie parole e hanno rigettato la mia legge.

20 F or what purpose to Me Comes frankincense from Sheba, And sweet cane from a far country? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable, Nor your sacrifices sweet to Me.”

Che m’importa dell’incenso che viene da Seba, della canna odorosa che viene dal paese lontano? I vostri olocausti non mi sono graditi, i vostri sacrifici non mi piacciono».

21 T herefore thus says the Lord: “Behold, I will lay stumbling blocks before this people, And the fathers and the sons together shall fall on them. The neighbor and his friend shall perish.”

Perciò così parla il Signore: «Ecco, io porrò davanti a questo popolo delle pietre d’intoppo, nelle quali inciamperanno assieme padri e figli, vicini e amici, e periranno».

22 T hus says the Lord: “Behold, a people comes from the north country, And a great nation will be raised from the farthest parts of the earth.

Così parla il Signore: «Ecco un popolo viene dal paese di settentrione, una grande nazione si muove dalle estremità della terra.

23 T hey will lay hold on bow and spear; They are cruel and have no mercy; Their voice roars like the sea; And they ride on horses, As men of war set in array against you, O daughter of Zion.”

Essi impugnano l’arco e la freccia; sono crudeli, non hanno pietà; la loro voce è come il muggito del mare; montano cavalli; sono pronti a combattere come un solo guerriero, contro di te, figlia di Sion».

24 W e have heard the report of it; Our hands grow feeble. Anguish has taken hold of us, Pain as of a woman in labor.

Noi ne abbiamo udito la fama e le nostre mani si sono infiacchite; l’angoscia ci coglie, un dolore come di partoriente.

25 D o not go out into the field, Nor walk by the way. Because of the sword of the enemy, Fear is on every side.

Non uscite nei campi, non camminate per le vie, perché la spada del nemico è là; tutto intorno è terrore.

26 O daughter of my people, Dress in sackcloth And roll about in ashes! Make mourning as for an only son, most bitter lamentation; For the plunderer will suddenly come upon us.

Figlia del mio popolo, vèstiti di sacco, ròtolati nella cenere, prendi il lutto come per un figlio unico, fa’ udire un amaro lamento, perché il devastatore ci piomba addosso improvviso.

27 “ I have set you as an assayer and a fortress among My people, That you may know and test their way.

«Io ti avevo messo fra il mio popolo come un saggiatore di metalli, perché tu conoscessi e saggiassi la loro via.

28 T hey are all stubborn rebels, walking as slanderers. They are bronze and iron, They are all corrupters;

Essi sono tutti ribelli incalliti, seminano calunnie; sono bronzo e ferro, tutti corrotti.

29 T he bellows blow fiercely, The lead is consumed by the fire; The smelter refines in vain, For the wicked are not drawn off.

Il mantice soffia con forza, il piombo è consumato dal fuoco; invano si cerca di raffinare, perché le scorie non si staccano.

30 P eople will call them rejected silver, Because the Lord has rejected them.”

Saranno chiamati: argento di rifiuto, perché il Signore li ha rigettati».
