1 A fter these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill Him.

Dopo queste cose, Gesù se ne andava per la Galilea, non volendo fare altrettanto in Giudea perché i Giudei cercavano di ucciderlo.

2 N ow the Jews’ Feast of Tabernacles was at hand.

Or la festa dei Giudei, detta delle Capanne, era vicina.

3 H is brothers therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing.

Perciò i suoi fratelli gli dissero: «Parti di qua e va’ in Giudea, affinché anche i tuoi discepoli vedano le opere che tu fai.

4 F or no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.”

Poiché nessuno agisce in segreto quando cerca di essere riconosciuto pubblicamente. Se tu fai queste cose, manifèstati al mondo».

5 F or even His brothers did not believe in Him.

Poiché neppure i suoi fratelli credevano in lui.

6 T hen Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.

Gesù quindi disse loro: «Il mio tempo non è ancora venuto; il vostro tempo, invece, è sempre pronto.

7 T he world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil.

Il mondo non può odiare voi; ma odia me, perché io testimonio di lui che le sue opere sono malvagie.

8 Y ou go up to this feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, for My time has not yet fully come.”

Salite voi alla festa; io non salgo a questa festa, perché il mio tempo non è ancora compiuto».

9 W hen He had said these things to them, He remained in Galilee. The Heavenly Scholar

Dette queste cose, rimase in Galilea. Gesù alla festa delle Capanne

10 B ut when His brothers had gone up, then He also went up to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.

Ma quando i suoi fratelli furono saliti alla festa, allora vi salì anche lui; non palesemente, ma come di nascosto.

11 T hen the Jews sought Him at the feast, and said, “Where is He?”

I Giudei dunque lo cercavano durante la festa e dicevano: «Dov’è quel tale?»

12 A nd there was much complaining among the people concerning Him. Some said, “He is good”; others said, “No, on the contrary, He deceives the people.”

Vi era tra la folla un gran mormorio riguardo a lui. Alcuni dicevano: «È un uomo per bene!», altri dicevano: «No, anzi, svia la gente!»

13 H owever, no one spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jews.

Nessuno però parlava di lui apertamente, per paura dei Giudei.

14 N ow about the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and taught.

Verso la metà della festa, Gesù salì al tempio e si mise a insegnare.

15 A nd the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?”

Perciò i Giudei si meravigliavano e dicevano: «Come mai conosce le Scritture senza aver fatto studi?»

16 J esus answered them and said, “My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me.

Gesù quindi rispose loro: «La mia dottrina non è mia, ma di colui che mi ha mandato.

17 I f anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority.

Se uno vuole fare la volontà di lui, conoscerà se questa dottrina è da Dio o se io parlo di mio.

18 H e who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him.

Chi parla di suo cerca la propria gloria; ma chi cerca la gloria di colui che l’ha mandato, è veritiero e non vi è ingiustizia in lui.

19 D id not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill Me?”

Mosè non vi ha forse dato la legge? Eppure nessuno di voi mette in pratica la legge! Perché cercate di uccidermi?»

20 T he people answered and said, “You have a demon. Who is seeking to kill You?”

La gente rispose: «Tu hai un demonio! Chi cerca di ucciderti?»

21 J esus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel.

Gesù rispose loro: «Un’opera sola ho fatto, e tutti ve ne meravigliate.

22 M oses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.

Mosè vi ha dato la circoncisione (non che venga da Mosè, ma viene dai padri); e voi circoncidete l’uomo in giorno di sabato.

23 I f a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?

Se un uomo riceve la circoncisione di sabato affinché la legge di Mosè non sia violata, vi adirate voi contro di me perché in giorno di sabato ho guarito un uomo tutto intero?

24 D o not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.” Could This Be the Christ?

Non giudicate secondo l’apparenza, ma giudicate secondo giustizia».

25 N ow some of them from Jerusalem said, “Is this not He whom they seek to kill?

Perciò alcuni di Gerusalemme dicevano: «Non è questi colui che cercano di uccidere?

26 B ut look! He speaks boldly, and they say nothing to Him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is truly the Christ?

Eppure, ecco, egli parla liberamente e non gli dicono nulla. Che i capi abbiano riconosciuto per davvero che egli è il Cristo?

27 H owever, we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.”

Eppure, costui sappiamo di dov’è; ma quando il Cristo verrà, nessuno saprà di dove egli sia».

28 T hen Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, saying, “You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know.

Gesù, dunque, insegnando nel tempio, esclamò: «Voi certamente mi conoscete e sapete di dove sono; però non sono venuto da me, ma colui che mi ha mandato è veritiero, e voi non lo conoscete.

29 B ut I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.”

Io lo conosco, perché vengo da lui, ed è lui che mi ha mandato».

30 T herefore they sought to take Him; but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.

Cercavano perciò di arrestarlo, ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso, perché l’ora sua non era ancora venuta.

31 A nd many of the people believed in Him, and said, “When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done?” Jesus and the Religious Leaders

Ma molti della folla credettero in lui, e dicevano: «Quando il Cristo sarà venuto, farà più segni di quanti ne abbia fatto questi?»

32 T he Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take Him.

I farisei udirono la gente mormorare queste cose di lui; e i capi dei sacerdoti e i farisei mandarono delle guardie per arrestarlo.

33 T hen Jesus said to them, “I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I go to Him who sent Me.

Perciò Gesù disse: «Io sono ancora con voi per poco tempo, poi me ne vado a colui che mi ha mandato.

34 Y ou will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come.”

Voi mi cercherete e non mi troverete; e dove io sarò, voi non potete venire».

35 T hen the Jews said among themselves, “Where does He intend to go that we shall not find Him? Does He intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?

Perciò i Giudei dissero tra di loro: «Dove andrà dunque ché noi non lo troveremo? Andrà forse da quelli che sono dispersi tra i Greci, a insegnare ai Greci?

36 W hat is this thing that He said, ‘You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come’ ?” The Promise of the Holy Spirit

Che significano queste sue parole: “Voi mi cercherete e non mi troverete” e: “Dove io sarò, voi non potete venire”?» Fiumi d’acqua viva

37 O n the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.

Nell’ultimo giorno, il giorno più solenne della festa, Gesù stando in piedi esclamò: «Se qualcuno ha sete, venga a me e beva.

38 H e who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

Chi crede in me, come ha detto la Scrittura, fiumi d’acqua viva sgorgheranno dal suo seno».

39 B ut this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. Who Is He?

Disse questo dello Spirito, che dovevano ricevere quelli che avevano creduto in lui; lo Spirito, infatti, non era ancora stato dato, perché Gesù non era ancora glorificato. Quel che la gente dice di Gesù

40 T herefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is the Prophet.”

Una parte dunque della gente, udite quelle parole, diceva: «Questi è davvero il profeta».

41 O thers said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee?

Altri dicevano: «Questi è il Cristo». Altri, invece, dicevano: «Ma è forse dalla Galilea che viene il Cristo?

42 H as not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?”

La Scrittura non dice forse che il Cristo viene dalla discendenza di Davide e da Betlemme, il villaggio dove stava Davide? »

43 S o there was a division among the people because of Him.

Vi fu dunque dissenso, tra la gente, a causa sua;

44 N ow some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him. Rejected by the Authorities

e alcuni di loro lo volevano arrestare, ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso.

45 T hen the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why have you not brought Him?”

Le guardie dunque tornarono dai capi dei sacerdoti e dai farisei, i quali dissero loro: «Perché non lo avete portato?»

46 T he officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this Man!”

Le guardie risposero: «Mai un uomo ha parlato così! »

47 T hen the Pharisees answered them, “Are you also deceived?

Perciò i farisei replicarono loro: «Siete stati sedotti anche voi?

48 H ave any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him?

Ha qualcuno dei capi o dei farisei creduto in lui?

49 B ut this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”

Ma questo popolino, che non conosce la legge, è maledetto!»

50 N icodemus (he who came to Jesus by night, being one of them) said to them,

Nicodemo (uno di loro, quello che prima era andato da lui ) disse loro:

51 “ Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?”

«La nostra legge giudica forse un uomo prima che sia stato udito e che si sappia quello che ha fatto?»

52 T hey answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.” An Adulteress Faces the Light of the World

Essi gli risposero: «Sei anche tu di Galilea? Esamina, e vedrai che dalla Galilea non sorge profeta ».

53 A nd everyone went to his own house.
