1 T he king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.

4 A haughty look, a proud heart, And the plowing of the wicked are sin.

Gli occhi alteri e il cuore superbo, lucerna degli empi, sono peccato.

5 T he plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, But those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty.

I disegni dell’uomo diligente conducono sicuramente all’abbondanza, ma chi troppo si affretta non fa che cadere nella miseria.

6 G etting treasures by a lying tongue Is the fleeting fantasy of those who seek death.

I tesori acquistati con lingua bugiarda sono un soffio fugace di gente che cerca la morte.

7 T he violence of the wicked will destroy them, Because they refuse to do justice.

La violenza degli empi li porta via, perché rifiutano di praticare l’equità.

8 T he way of a guilty man is perverse; But as for the pure, his work is right.

La via del colpevole è tortuosa, ma l’innocente opera con rettitudine.

9 B etter to dwell in a corner of a housetop, Than in a house shared with a contentious woman.

Meglio abitare sul canto di un tetto, che in una gran casa con una moglie rissosa.

10 T he soul of the wicked desires evil; His neighbor finds no favor in his eyes.

L’empio desidera fare il male; il suo amico stesso non trova pietà ai suoi occhi.

11 W hen the scoffer is punished, the simple is made wise; But when the wise is instructed, he receives knowledge.

Quando il beffardo è punito, l’ingenuo diventa saggio; quando s’istruisce il saggio, egli acquista scienza.

12 T he righteous God wisely considers the house of the wicked, Overthrowing the wicked for their wickedness.

Il giusto tiene d’occhio la casa dell’empio e precipita gli empi nelle sciagure.

13 W hoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor Will also cry himself and not be heard.

Chi chiude l’orecchio al grido del povero griderà anch’egli, e non gli sarà risposto.

14 A gift in secret pacifies anger, And a bribe behind the back, strong wrath.

Un dono fatto in segreto placa la collera, e un regalo dato in privato, l’ira violenta.

15 I t is a joy for the just to do justice, But destruction will come to the workers of iniquity.

Far ciò che è retto è una gioia per il giusto, ma è una rovina per i malfattori.

16 A man who wanders from the way of understanding Will rest in the assembly of the dead.

L’uomo che smarrisce la via del buon senso riposerà nell’assemblea dei defunti.

17 H e who loves pleasure will be a poor man; He who loves wine and oil will not be rich.

Chi ama godere sarà bisognoso, chi ama il vino e l’olio non arricchirà.

18 T he wicked shall be a ransom for the righteous, And the unfaithful for the upright.

L’empio serve di riscatto al giusto; e il perfido, agli uomini retti.

19 B etter to dwell in the wilderness, Than with a contentious and angry woman.

Meglio abitare in un deserto, che con una donna rissosa e stizzosa.

20 T here is desirable treasure, And oil in the dwelling of the wise, But a foolish man squanders it.

In casa del saggio ci sono tesori preziosi e olio, ma l’uomo stolto dà fondo a tutto.

21 H e who follows righteousness and mercy Finds life, righteousness, and honor.

Chi ricerca la giustizia e la bontà troverà vita, giustizia e gloria.

22 A wise man scales the city of the mighty, And brings down the trusted stronghold.

Il saggio dà la scalata alla città dei forti e abbatte il baluardo in cui essa confidava.

23 W hoever guards his mouth and tongue Keeps his soul from troubles.

Chi sorveglia la sua bocca e la sua lingua preserva se stesso dall’angoscia.

24 A proud and haughty man — “Scoffer” is his name; He acts with arrogant pride.

Il nome del superbo insolente è: beffardo; egli fa ogni cosa con furore di superbia.

25 T he desire of the lazy man kills him, For his hands refuse to labor.

I desideri del pigro lo uccidono, perché le sue mani rifiutano di lavorare.

26 H e covets greedily all day long, But the righteous gives and does not spare.

C’è chi da mattina a sera desidera avidamente, ma il giusto dona senza mai rifiutare.

27 T he sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination; How much more when he brings it with wicked intent!

Il sacrificio dell’empio è cosa abominevole; quanto più se l’offre con intento malvagio!

28 A false witness shall perish, But the man who hears him will speak endlessly.

Il testimone bugiardo perirà, ma l’uomo che ascolta potrà sempre parlare.

29 A wicked man hardens his face, But as for the upright, he establishes his way.

L’empio fa la faccia tosta, ma l’uomo retto rende ferma la sua condotta.

30 T here is no wisdom or understanding Or counsel against the Lord.

Non c’è saggezza, non intelligenza, non consiglio che valga contro il Signore.

31 T he horse is prepared for the day of battle, But deliverance is of the Lord.

Il cavallo è pronto per il giorno della battaglia, ma la vittoria appartiene al Signore.
