1 T hen the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said:

El Señor respondió a Job desde el torbellino y dijo:

2 “ Who is this who darkens counsel By words without knowledge?

“¿Quién es éste que oscurece el consejo Con palabras sin conocimiento ?

3 N ow prepare yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me.

Ciñe ahora tus lomos como un hombre, Y Yo te preguntaré, y tú Me instruirás.

4 “ Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding.

¿Dónde estabas tú cuando Yo echaba los cimientos de la tierra ? Dí melo, si tienes inteligencia.

5 W ho determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it?

¿Quién puso sus medidas ? Ya que sabes. ¿O quién extendió sobre ella cordel?

6 T o what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone,

¿Sobre qué se asientan sus basas, O quién puso su piedra angular

7 W hen the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Cuando cantaban juntas las estrellas del alba, Y todos los hijos de Dios gritaban de gozo?

8 “ Or who shut in the sea with doors, When it burst forth and issued from the womb;

¿O quién encerró con puertas el mar, Cuando, irrumpiendo, se salió de su seno;

9 W hen I made the clouds its garment, And thick darkness its swaddling band;

Cuando hice de una nube su vestidura, Y de espesa oscuridad sus pañales;

10 W hen I fixed My limit for it, And set bars and doors;

Cuando sobre él establecí límites, Puse puertas y cerrojos,

11 W hen I said, ‘This far you may come, but no farther, And here your proud waves must stop!’

Y dije: ‘Hasta aquí llegarás, pero no más allá; Aquí se detendrá el orgullo de tus olas?’

12 “ Have you commanded the morning since your days began, And caused the dawn to know its place,

13 T hat it might take hold of the ends of the earth, And the wicked be shaken out of it?

Para que ella eche mano a los confines de la tierra, Y de ella sean sacudidos los impíos ?

14 I t takes on form like clay under a seal, And stands out like a garment.

Ella cambia como barro bajo el sello; Y como con vestidura se presenta.

15 F rom the wicked their light is withheld, And the upraised arm is broken.

Pero es quitada la luz a los impíos, Y es quebrado el brazo rebelde.

16 “ Have you entered the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in search of the depths?

¿Has entrado hasta las fuentes del mar, O andado en las profundidades del abismo ?

17 H ave the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the doors of the shadow of death?

¿Te han sido reveladas las puertas de la muerte, O has visto las puertas de la densa oscuridad ?

18 H ave you comprehended the breadth of the earth? Tell Me, if you know all this.

¿Has comprendido la extensión de la tierra ? Dí melo, si tú sabes todo esto.

19 “ Where is the way to the dwelling of light? And darkness, where is its place,

¿Dónde está el camino a la morada de la luz? Y la oscuridad, ¿dónde está su lugar,

20 T hat you may take it to its territory, That you may know the paths to its home?

Para que la lleves a su territorio, Y para que entiendas los senderos de su casa?

21 D o you know it, because you were born then, Or because the number of your days is great?

¡Tú lo sabes, porque entonces ya habías nacido, Y grande es el número de tus días!

22 “ Have you entered the treasury of snow, Or have you seen the treasury of hail,

¿Has entrado en los depósitos de la nieve, O has visto los depósitos del granizo,

23 W hich I have reserved for the time of trouble, For the day of battle and war?

24 B y what way is light diffused, Or the east wind scattered over the earth?

¿Dónde está el camino en que se divide la luz, O el viento del este esparcido sobre la tierra?

25 “ Who has divided a channel for the overflowing water, Or a path for the thunderbolt,

¿Quién ha abierto un canal para el turbión, O un camino para el rayo,

26 T o cause it to rain on a land where there is no one, A wilderness in which there is no man;

Para traer lluvia sobre tierra despoblada, Sobre un desierto sin hombre alguno,

27 T o satisfy the desolate waste, And cause to spring forth the growth of tender grass?

Para saciar la tierra desierta y desolada, Y hacer brotar las semillas de la hierba?

28 H as the rain a father? Or who has begotten the drops of dew?

¿Tiene padre la lluvia ? ¿Quién ha engendrado las gotas de rocío?

29 F rom whose womb comes the ice? And the frost of heaven, who gives it birth?

¿Del vientre de quién ha salido el hielo ? Y la escarcha del cielo, ¿quién la ha dado a luz?

30 T he waters harden like stone, And the surface of the deep is frozen.

El agua se endurece como la piedra, Y aprisionada está la superficie del abismo.

31 “ Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, Or loose the belt of Orion?

¿Puedes tú atar las cadenas de estrellas de las Pléyades, O desatar las cuerdas de la constelación Orión ?

32 C an you bring out Mazzaroth in its season? Or can you guide the Great Bear with its cubs?

¿Haces aparecer una constelación a su tiempo, Y conduces (las estrellas de) la Osa con sus hijos?

33 D o you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you set their dominion over the earth?

¿Conoces tú las ordenanzas de los cielos, O fijas su dominio en la tierra ?

34 “ Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, That an abundance of water may cover you?

¿Puedes levantar tu voz a las nubes, Para que abundancia de agua te cubra ?

35 C an you send out lightnings, that they may go, And say to you, ‘Here we are! ’?

¿Envías los relámpagos para que vayan Y te digan: ‘Aquí estamos ’?

36 W ho has put wisdom in the mind? Or who has given understanding to the heart?

¿Quién ha puesto sabiduría en lo más íntimo del ser, O ha dado a la mente inteligencia ?

37 W ho can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven,

¿Quién puede contar las nubes con sabiduría, O inclinar los cántaros de los cielos,

38 W hen the dust hardens in clumps, And the clods cling together?

Cuando el polvo en masa se endurece, Y los terrones se pegan entre sí?

39 “ Can you hunt the prey for the lion, Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

¿Puedes cazar la presa para la leona, O saciar el apetito de los leoncillos

40 W hen they crouch in their dens, Or lurk in their lairs to lie in wait?

Cuando se agachan en sus madrigueras, O están al acecho en sus guaridas ?

41 W ho provides food for the raven, When its young ones cry to God, And wander about for lack of food?

¿Quién prepara para el cuervo su alimento Cuando sus crías claman a Dios Y vagan sin comida ?
