1 B elshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.

Царь Валтасар устроил великий пир для тысячи своих приближенных и пил с ними вино.

2 B elshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, might drink therefrom.

Выпив вина, Валтасар приказал принести золотые и серебряные кубки, которые его дед Навуходоносор взял из Иерусалимского храма. Царь со своими приближенными, женами и наложницами собирался пить из них.

3 T hen they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, drank from them.

Золотые и серебряные кубки, взятые из храма, дома Бога в Иерусалиме, были принесены, и царь со своими приближенными, женами и наложницами пил из них.

4 T hey drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

Они пили вино и славили богов из золота и серебра, из бронзы, железа, дерева и камня.

5 I n the same hour came forth the fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaster of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

Тотчас же появились пальцы человеческой руки, которые стали писать на штукатурке стены царского дворца, рядом со светильником. Царь глядел на эту руку, когда она писала.

6 T hen the king's countenance was changed in him, and his thoughts troubled him; and the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.

Его лицо побледнело, и он так испугался, что его колени затряслись, и у него подкосились ноги.

7 T he king cried aloud to bring in the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spake and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and show me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

Царь громко закричал, чтобы привели волшебников, звездочетов и колдунов и сказал этим вавилонским мудрецам: – Того, кто прочтет эту надпись и объяснит мне ее смысл, оденут в пурпур, возложат ему на шею золотую цепь, и он станет третьим человеком в царстве.

8 T hen came in all the king's wise men; but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation.

Все царские мудрецы вошли, но не смогли ни прочитать надписи, ни объяснить царю ее смысл.

9 T hen was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were perplexed.

Тогда царь еще больше перепугался и изменился в лице. Его приближенные были в крайнем замешательстве.

10 N ow the queen by reason of the words of the king and his lords came into the banquet house: the queen spake and said, O king, live forever; let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed.

Услышав голоса царя и его приближенных, в пиршественный зал вошла царица. – О царь, живи вечно! – сказала она. – Не тревожься и не бледней!

11 T here is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him; and the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made him master of the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;

В твоем царстве есть человек, в котором пребывает дух святых богов. Во времена твоего деда он прославился своей просвещенностью, разумом и мудростью, подобной мудрости богов. Царь Навуходоносор, твой дед, поставил его главой чародеев, волшебников, звездочетов и колдунов.

12 f orasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and showing of dark sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will show the interpretation.

В этом человеке, Данииле, которого царь назвал Белтешаццаром, нашлись проницательность, знание, разум и умение толковать сны, раскрывать загадки и разрешать сложные задачи. Вели позвать Даниила, и он объяснит тебе смысл надписи.

13 T hen was Daniel brought in before the king. The king spake and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, who art of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Judah?

Тогда Даниила привели к царю, и царь сказал ему: – Ты ли Даниил, один из тех пленников, которых мой дед, царь, привел из Иудеи?

14 I have heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in thee.

Я слышал, что в тебе пребывает дух богов и что в тебе нашлись просвещенность, разум и великая мудрость.

15 A nd now the wise men, the enchanters, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof; but they could not show the interpretation of the thing.

Ко мне приводили мудрецов и волшебников, чтобы они прочитали эту надпись и объяснили мне ее смысл, но они не смогли сделать это.

16 B ut I have heard of thee, that thou canst give interpretations, and dissolve doubts; now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.

А о тебе я слышал, что ты можешь давать истолкования и разрешать трудные задачи. Если ты сможешь прочитать эту надпись и объяснить мне ее смысл, то тебя оденут в пурпур, возложат тебе на шею золотую цепь, и ты станешь третьим человеком в царстве.

17 T hen Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; nevertheless I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

Даниил ответил царю: – Оставь дары себе и отдай награды кому-нибудь другому. Я и так прочитаю царю надпись и объясню ему ее смысл.

18 O thou king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father the kingdom, and greatness, and glory, and majesty:

О царь, Всевышний Бог дал твоему деду Навуходоносору владычество и величие, славу и почет.

19 a nd because of the greatness that he gave him, all the peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew, and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he raised up, and whom he would he put down.

От величия, которое Он ему дал, все народы, племена и люди, говорящие на разных языках, трепетали перед ним и боялись его. Тех, кого царь хотел предать смерти, он предавал смерти; тех, кого он хотел пощадить, щадил; тех, кого он хотел возвысить, возвышал, а тех, кого хотел смирить, смирял.

20 B ut when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:

Но когда его сердце возгордилось и огрубело от гордости, он был смещен с престола и лишен славы.

21 a nd he was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the beasts', and his dwelling was with the wild asses; he was fed with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; until he knew that the Most High God ruleth in the kingdom of men, and that he setteth up over it whomsoever he will.

Его прогнали от людей, и его разум уподобился разуму зверя; он жил с дикими ослами и ел траву, подобно волу; его тело омывалось небесной росой, пока он не признал, что Всевышний Бог властвует над царствами смертных и ставит над ними кого желает.

22 A nd thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thy heart, though thou knewest all this,

Но ты, его внук Валтасар, не смирил себя, хотя знал все это!

23 b ut hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou and thy lords, thy wives and thy concubines, have drunk wine from them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified.

Ты возвысил себя против Владыки небес. Ты велел принести себе кубки из Его дома и со своими приближенными, женами и наложницами пил из них. Ты славил богов из серебра и золота, из бронзы, железа, дерева и камня, которые не могут ни видеть, ни слышать, ни понимать. Но Бога, в руках Которого твоя жизнь и все твои пути, ты не почтил.

24 T hen was the part of the hand sent from before him, and this writing was inscribed.

Поэтому и послана была от Него рука, которая написала эту надпись.

25 A nd this is the writing that was inscribed: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

Вот, что написано: МЕНЕ, МЕНЕ, ТЕКЕЛ, У-ПАРСИН

26 T his is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and brought it to an end;

Вот смысл этих слов: МЕНЕ – Бог исчислил дни твоего царствования и положил ему конец.

27 T EKEL; thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.

ТЕКЕЛ – ты взвешен на весах и найден слишком легким.

28 P ERES; thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

ПЕРЕС – твое царство разделено и отдано мидянам и персам.

29 T hen commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

Тогда по повелению Валтасара Даниила одели в пурпур, возложили ему на шею золотую цепь и провозгласили третьим высшим правителем царства.

30 I n that night Belshazzar the Chaldean King was slain.

В ту же ночь Валтасар, царь халдеев, был убит,

31 A nd Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.

и Дарий Мидянин принял царство в возрасте шестидесяти двух лет.
