Tira da prata a escória, e sairá um vaso para o fundidor.

5 T ake the sinful away from the king, and his throne will stand on what is right and good.

Tira o ímpio da presença do rei, e o seu trono se firmará na justiça.

6 D o not honor yourself in front of the king, and do not stand in the place of great men.

Não reclames para ti honra na presença do rei, nem te ponhas no lugar dos grandes;

7 F or it is better to be told, “Come up here,” than to be put down in front of the ruler whom your eyes have seen.

porque melhor é que te digam: Sobe, para aqui; do que seres humilhado perante o príncipe.

8 D o not go out in a hurry to argue. Or what will you do in the end, when your neighbor puts you to shame?

O que os teus olhos viram, não te apresses a revelar, para depois, ao fim, não saberes o que hás de fazer, podendo-te confundir o teu próximo.

9 A rgue your side of the problem with your neighbor, but do not tell the secret of another.

Pleiteia a tua causa com o teu próximo mesmo; e não reveles o segredo de outrem;

10 O r he who hears you may put you to shame, and bad things will be said about you forever.

para que não te desonre aquele que o ouvir, não se apartando de ti a infâmia.

11 A word spoken at the right time is like fruit of gold set in silver.

Como maçãs de ouro em salvas de prata, assim é a palavra dita a seu tempo.

12 A wise man speaking strong words to a listening ear is like a piece of gold for the ear and a beautiful object of fine gold.

Como pendentes de ouro e gargantilhas de ouro puro, assim é o sábio repreensor para o ouvido obediente.

13 A faithful man who carries news is like the cold of snow at gathering time to those who send him, for he makes the spirit of his owners feel new again.

Como o frescor de neve no tempo da sega, assim é o mensageiro fiel para com os que o enviam, porque refrigera o espírito dos seus senhores.

14 A man who talks much of a gift he never gives is like clouds and wind without rain.

como nuvens e ventos que não trazem chuva, assim é o homem que se gaba de dádivas que não fez.

15 W hen one is slow to anger, a ruler may be won over. A gentle tongue will break a bone.

Pela longanimidade se persuade o príncipe, e a língua branda quebranta os ossos.

16 H ave you found honey? Eat only what you need, or you may become filled with it and spit it up.

Se achaste mel, come somente o que te basta, para que porventura não te fartes dele, e o venhas a vomitar.

Põe raramente o teu pé na casa do teu próximo, para que não se enfade de ti, e te aborreça.
