1 E ntão se levantou um grande clamor do povo e de duas mulheres contra os judeus, seus irmãos.

Then there arose a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brothers the Jews.

2 P ois havia alguns que diziam: Nós, nossos filhos e nossas filhas somos muitos; que se nos dê trigo, para que comamos e vivamos.

For there were that said, “We, our sons and our daughters, are many. Let us get grain, that we may eat and live.”

3 T ambém havia os que diziam: Estamos empenhando nossos campos, as nossas vinhas e as nossas casas, para conseguirmos trigo durante esta fome.

Some also there were that said, “We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses. Let us get grain, because of the famine.”

4 H avia ainda outros que diziam: Temos tomado dinheiro emprestado até para o tributo do rei sobre os nossos campos e as nossas vinhas.

There were also some who said, “We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute using our fields and our vineyards as collateral.

5 O ra, a nossa carne é como a carne de nossos irmãos, e nossos filhos como os filhos deles; e eis que estamos sujeitando nossos filhos e nossas filhas para serem servos, e algumas de nossas filhas já estão reduzidas ã escravidão. Não está em nosso poder evitá-lo, pois outros têm os nossos campos e as nossas vinhas.

Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our children as their children. Behold, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters have been brought into bondage. Neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards.”

6 O uvindo eu, pois, o seu clamor, e estas palavras, muito me indignei.

I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.

7 E ntão consultei comigo mesmo; depois contendi com do nobres e com os magistrados, e disse-lhes: Estais tomando juros, cada um de seu irmão. E ajuntei contra eles uma grande assembléia.

Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said to them, “You exact usury, everyone of his brother.” I held a great assembly against them.

8 E disse-lhes: Nós, segundo as nossas posses, temos resgatado os judeus, nossos irmãos, que foram vendidos

I said to them, “We, after our ability, have redeemed our brothers the Jews that were sold to the nations; and would you even sell your brothers, and should they be sold to us?” Then they held their peace, and found never a word.

9 D isse mais: Não é bom o que fazeis; porventura não devíeis andar no temor do nosso Deus, por causa do opróbrio dos povos, os nosso inimigos?

Also I said, “The thing that you do is not good. Ought you not to walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the nations our enemies?

10 Também eu, meus irmãos e meus moços lhes temos emprestado dinheiro e trigo. Deixemos, peço-vos este ganho.

I likewise, my brothers and my servants, lend them money and grain. Please let us stop this usury.

11 R estituí-lhes hoje os seus campos, as suas vinhas, os seus olivais e as suas casas, como também a centésima parte do dinheiro, do trigo, do mosto e do azeite, que deles tendes exigido.

Please restore to them, even today, their fields, their vineyards, their olive groves, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, that you are charging them.”

12 E ntão disseram: Nós lho restituiremos, e nada lhes pediremos; faremos assim como dizes. Então, chamando os sacerdotes, fi-los jurar que fariam conforme prometeram.

Then they said, “We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do, even as you say.” Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they would do according to this promise.

13 T ambém sacudi as minhas vestes, e disse: Assim sacuda Deus da sua casa e do seu trabalho todo homem que não cumprir esta promessa; assim mesmo seja ele sacudido e despojado. E toda a congregação disse: Amém! E louvaram ao Senhor; e o povo fez conforme a sua promessa.

Also I shook out my lap, and said, “So may God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, that doesn’t perform this promise; even thus be he shaken out, and emptied.” All the assembly said, “Amen,” and praised Yahweh. The people did according to this promise.

14 A lém disso, desde o dia em que fui nomeado seu governador na terra de Judá, desde o ano vinte até o anos trinta e dois do rei Artaxerxes, isto é, por doze anos, nem eu nem meus irmãos comemos o pão devido ao governador.

Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even to the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brothers have not eaten the bread of the governor.

15 M as os primeiros governadores, que foram antes de mim, oprimiram o povo, e tomaram-lhe pão e vinho e, além disso, quarenta siclos de prata; e até os seus moços dominavam sobre o povo. Porém eu assim não fiz, por causa do temor de Deus.

But the former governors who were before me were supported by the people, and took bread and wine from them, besides forty shekels of silver; yes, even their servants ruled over the people: but I didn’t do so, because of the fear of God.

16 T ambém eu prossegui na obra deste muro, e terra nenhuma compramos; e todos os meus moços se ajuntaram ali para a obra.

Yes, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered there to the work.

17 S entavam-se ã minha mesa cento e cinqüenta homens dentre os judeus e os magistrados, além dos que vinham ter conosco dentre as nações que estavam ao redor de nós.

Moreover there were at my table, of the Jews and the rulers, one hundred fifty men, besides those who came to us from among the nations that were around us.

18 O ra, o que se preparava para cada dia era um boi e seis ovelhas escolhidas; também se preparavam aves e, de dez em dez dias, provisão de toda qualidade de vinho. Todavia, nem por isso exigi o pão devido ao governador, porquanto a servidão deste povo era pesada.

Now that which was prepared for one day was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this I didn’t demand the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy on this people.

19 L embra-te de mim para teu bem, ó meu Deus, e de tudo quanto tenho feito em prol deste povo

Remember to me, my God, for good, all that I have done for this people.
