1 » Pero los hombres del pueblo y sus esposas protestaron contra sus compatriotas judíos,

Then there arose a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brothers the Jews.

2 p ues decían: “Si contamos a nuestros hijos y nuestras hijas, en nuestra familia somos muchos, y tenemos que pedir prestado el grano para poder comer y vivir.”

For there were that said, “We, our sons and our daughters, are many. Let us get grain, that we may eat and live.”

3 O tros decían: “Es tanta el hambre que padecemos, que ya hemos hipotecado nuestras tierras, nuestras viñas y nuestras casas, a cambio de alimentos.”

Some also there were that said, “We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses. Let us get grain, because of the famine.”

4 O tros se quejaban: “Hemos tenido que hipotecar nuestras tierras y nuestras viñas para pagar el tributo al rey.

There were also some who said, “We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute using our fields and our vineyards as collateral.

5 A unque nuestro cuerpo es semejante al de nuestros hermanos, y nuestros hijos son como sus hijos, nosotros hemos tenido que hacer de nuestros hijos y nuestras hijas esclavos al servicio de otros; algunas ya lo son, y no podemos rescatarlas porque nuestras tierras y nuestras viñas pertenecen a otros.”

Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our children as their children. Behold, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters have been brought into bondage. Neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards.”

6 » Cuando escuché sus quejas, me enojé mucho.

I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.

7 P ero reflexioné acerca de lo que iba a decir; luego convoqué a los hombres importantes y a los oficiales del templo, y les dije: “¿Son capaces de exigir altos intereses de sus hermanos?”

Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said to them, “You exact usury, everyone of his brother.” I held a great assembly against them.

8 Y también les dije: “De acuerdo con nuestras posibilidades, nosotros rescatamos a nuestros hermanos judíos que habían sido vendidos como esclavos a otros pueblos; ¿y ustedes se atreven a vender a sus propios hermanos entre nosotros mismos?” Y como no supieron qué responder, prefirieron callar.

I said to them, “We, after our ability, have redeemed our brothers the Jews that were sold to the nations; and would you even sell your brothers, and should they be sold to us?” Then they held their peace, and found never a word.

9 P ero añadí: “Esto que están haciendo no está bien. ¡Demuestren temor por nuestro Dios! Así no tendremos que avergonzarnos delante de nuestros enemigos de otros pueblos.

Also I said, “The thing that you do is not good. Ought you not to walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the nations our enemies?

10 M is hermanos y yo también les hemos prestado dinero y grano, para que ellos puedan sobrevivir. ¡Dejemos de cobrarles intereses!

I likewise, my brothers and my servants, lend them money and grain. Please let us stop this usury.

11 Y o les ruego que hoy mismo les devuelvan sus tierras, sus viñas, sus olivares y sus casas, más la centésima parte del dinero, del grano, del vino y del aceite que les cobraron como intereses.”

Please restore to them, even today, their fields, their vineyards, their olive groves, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, that you are charging them.”

12 Y ellos dijeron: “Así lo haremos. Vamos a devolverles lo que les habíamos cobrado. No tendrán que pagarnos nada.” Entonces reuní a los sacerdotes y los comprometí a cumplir lo que se había acordado;

Then they said, “We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do, even as you say.” Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they would do according to this promise.

13 l uego sacudí mis vestiduras y les dije: “Así como yo he sacudido mis vestidos, que Dios sacuda de su casa a quien no cumpla con este acuerdo. ¡Que lo eche fuera!” Y el pueblo dijo: “¡Amén!”, y alabó al Señor y empezó a poner en práctica todo lo que habíamos acordado.

Also I shook out my lap, and said, “So may God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, that doesn’t perform this promise; even thus be he shaken out, and emptied.” All the assembly said, “Amen,” and praised Yahweh. The people did according to this promise.

14 » Durante doce años, desde el día en que el rey Artajerjes me nombró gobernador de la tierra de Judá, es decir, desde el año veinte de su reinado hasta el año treinta y dos, ni mis hermanos ni yo nos alimentamos con las contribuciones que yo recibía como gobernador.

Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even to the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brothers have not eaten the bread of the governor.

15 E n cambio, los gobernadores anteriores a mí abrumaban al pueblo y les cobraban cuarenta monedas de plata por el pan y el vino que les vendían; aun sus mismos criados se creían superiores y se aprovechaban del pueblo. Pero yo no me porté así, por mi temor a Dios.

But the former governors who were before me were supported by the people, and took bread and wine from them, besides forty shekels of silver; yes, even their servants ruled over the people: but I didn’t do so, because of the fear of God.

16 » Como parte del pueblo, a mí y a mis criados nos tocó restaurar un tramo de la muralla, aun cuando yo no había comprado tierras.

Yes, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered there to the work.

17 A mi mesa se sentaban ciento cincuenta judíos y oficiales, más otros que venían de las naciones vecinas.

Moreover there were at my table, of the Jews and the rulers, one hundred fifty men, besides those who came to us from among the nations that were around us.

18 C ada día se mataban un buey y seis ovejas engordadas; a mí me preparaban aves para comer, y cada diez días se servía vino en abundancia. Sin embargo, nunca exigí que eso se pagara con las contribuciones a que tenía derecho como gobernador, porque la pobreza del pueblo era extrema.

Now that which was prepared for one day was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this I didn’t demand the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy on this people.

19 » Dios mío, ¡te ruego que no te olvides de mí, ni de todo lo que he hecho por este pueblo!

Remember to me, my God, for good, all that I have done for this people.
