1 P ensé entonces en lo íntimo de mi ser: «¡Anda, que voy a probar lo que es la alegría! ¡Voy a disfrutar de lo bueno!» ¡Pero resultó que también esto es vanidad!

I said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with mirth: therefore enjoy pleasure”; and behold, this also was vanity.

2 Y concluí que divertirse es una locura, y que los placeres no sirven de nada.

I said of laughter, “It is foolishness”; and of mirth, “What does it accomplish?”

3 E n lo íntimo de mi ser me propuse agasajarme con vino, y ser lo más necio posible, sin dejar de mantenerme bajo el control de mi sabiduría. Quería ver qué de bueno sacan los mortales de sus ocupaciones de toda la vida bajo el cielo.

I searched in my heart how to cheer my flesh with wine, my heart yet guiding me with wisdom, and how to lay hold of folly, until I might see what it was good for the sons of men that they should do under heaven all the days of their lives.

4 E mprendí grandes obras, hice que me construyeran casas y que me plantaran viñas,

I made myself great works. I built myself houses. I planted myself vineyards.

5 t uve mis propios huertos y jardines, y allí planté toda clase de árboles frutales.

I made myself gardens and parks, and I planted trees in them of all kinds of fruit.

6 M andé construir estanques de agua para poder regar la floresta donde crecían los árboles.

I made myself pools of water, to water from it the forest where trees were reared.

7 C ompré esclavos y esclavas, y tuve criados que nacieron en mi casa. Tuve también grandes ganados de vacas y de ovejas, más que todos los que reinaron antes de mí en Jerusalén.

I bought male servants and female servants, and had servants born in my house. I also had great possessions of herds and flocks, above all who were before me in Jerusalem;

8 A cumulé plata y oro, y tesoros que antes fueron de otros reyes y provincias. Tuve cantores y cantoras, y disfruté de los placeres humanos, ¡habidos y por haber!

I also gathered silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and of the provinces. I got myself male and female singers, and the delights of the sons of men—musical instruments, and that of all sorts.

9 M i grandeza fue mayor que la de todos los que reinaron antes de mí en Jerusalén. Pero, además, siempre conservé mi sabiduría.

So I was great, and increased more than all who were before me in Jerusalem. My wisdom also remained with me.

10 N o les negué a mis ojos nada que desearan ver, ni conscientemente me aparté de placer alguno, porque en lo íntimo disfruté de todos mis afanes. ¡Ésa fue la recompensa de todos mis afanes!

Whatever my eyes desired, I didn’t keep from them. I didn’t withhold my heart from any joy, for my heart rejoiced because of all my labor, and this was my portion from all my labor.

11 L uego me puse a considerar todo lo que yo había hecho con mis manos, y el trabajo que me costó realizarlo, ¡y resultó que todo era vanidad y aflicción de espíritu! ¡Nada es provechoso bajo el sol!

Then I looked at all the works that my hands had worked, and at the labor that I had labored to do; and behold, all was vanity and a chasing after wind, and there was no profit under the sun.

12 M e puse a considerar lo que es la sabiduría, la locura y la necedad. En realidad, ¿qué puede hacer quien venga después del rey? Aparte de lo que ya se ha hecho, ¡nada!

I turned myself to consider wisdom, madness, and folly: for what can the king’s successor do? Just that which has been done long ago.

13 C oncluí entonces que la sabiduría sobrepasa a la necedad, como sobrepasa la luz a las tinieblas.

Then I saw that wisdom excels folly, as far as light excels darkness.

14 E l sabio usa los ojos y la cabeza, pero el necio anda a tientas. Y también me di cuenta de que unos y otros correrán la misma suerte.

The wise man’s eyes are in his head, and the fool walks in darkness—and yet I perceived that one event happens to them all.

15 E ntonces me dije a mí mismo: «Si lo mismo que le espera al necio, también me espera a mí, ¿qué caso tiene esforzarme por ser más sabio?» Concluí entonces que también esto es vanidad,

Then I said in my heart, “As it happens to the fool, so will it happen even to me; and why was I then more wise?” Then I said in my heart that this also is vanity.

16 p orque jamás hay quien se acuerde del sabio ni del necio; en los días venideros todo será olvidado, y sabios y necios morirán por igual.

For of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no memory for ever, since in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. Indeed, the wise man must die just like the fool!

17 P or eso aborrecí la vida, porque lo que se hace bajo el sol me resultaba chocante, pues todo es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.

So I hated life, because the work that is worked under the sun was grievous to me; for all is vanity and a chasing after wind.

18 A borrecí también el haber trabajado tanto bajo el sol, pues todo lo que hice tendré que dejárselo a otro que vendrá después de mí.

I hated all my labor in which I labored under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who comes after me.

19 ¿ Y cómo saber si será sabio o necio el que se quedará con todos mis trabajos y afanes, a los que tanto trabajo y sabiduría dediqué bajo el sol? ¡También esto es vanidad!

Who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have rule over all of my labor in which I have labored, and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

20 E l desánimo volvió a dominar mi corazón al ver todos mis afanes y trabajos, a los que tanta sabiduría dediqué bajo el sol:

Therefore I began to cause my heart to despair concerning all the labor in which I had labored under the sun.

21 ¿ Tener que dedicar sabiduría, conocimientos y rectitud, para luego dejarle el fruto de su trabajo a quien nunca se lo ganó? ¡Eso también es vanidad, y un mal muy grande!

For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, with knowledge, and with skillfulness; yet he shall leave it for his portion to a man who has not labored for it. This also is vanity and a great evil.

22 ¿ Qué saca uno de tanto trabajar y fatigarse y afanarse bajo el sol?

For what has a man of all his labor, and of the striving of his heart, in which he labors under the sun?

23 ¡ Todo el tiempo es de dolores, trabajos y molestias! ¡Ni siquiera de noche encuentra uno reposo! ¡Y esto es también vanidad!

For all his days are sorrows, and his travail is grief; yes, even in the night his heart takes no rest. This also is vanity.

24 N o hay nada mejor para nosotros que comer y beber, y disfrutar de nuestros trabajos. Y he concluido que esto viene de la mano de Dios.

There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and make his soul enjoy good in his labor. This also I saw, that it is from the hand of God.

25 P orque, ¿quién puede comer y cuidarse mejor que uno mismo?

For who can eat, or who can have enjoyment, more than I?

26 E s un hecho que Dios da sabiduría, conocimientos y alegría a quien es de su agrado, y que al pecador le da el trabajo de recoger y amontonar, para dárselo a quien es del agrado de Dios. ¡Y también esto es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu!

For to the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he gives travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him who pleases God. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.
