1 L a palabra del Señor vino al profeta Jeremías en contra de las naciones.

Yahweh’s word which came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nations.

2 E n el año cuarto del reinado de Joacín hijo de Josías en Judá, el faraón Necao acampó con todo su ejército en Carquemis, a orillas del río Éufrates, pero allí el rey Nabucodonosor de Babilonia lo derrotó. Esto es lo que dijo acerca de Egipto:

Of Egypt: concerning the army of Pharaoh Necoh king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates in Carchemish, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon struck in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah.

3 « Preparen los escudos y paveses, y presenten combate.

Prepare the buckler and shield, and draw near to battle!

4 U stedes los de caballería, sujeten los caballos a los carros, y trepen a ellos. Pónganse los yelmos y las corazas; limpien las lanzas.

Harness the horses, and get up, you horsemen, and stand up with your helmets; furbish the spears, put on the coats of mail.

5 ¿ Por qué los veo retroceder, llenos de miedo? Sus valientes han sido derrotados, y huyen sin volver la mirada atrás. ¡Hay terror por todas partes! —Palabra del Señor.

Why have I seen it? they are dismayed and are turned backward; and their mighty ones are beaten down, and have fled apace, and don’t look back: terror is on every side, says Yahweh.

6 » ¡Que no huya el ligero de pies! ¡Que no escapen los valientes, porque tropezarán y caerán en el norte, a orillas del río Éufrates!

Don’t let the swift flee away, nor the mighty man escape; in the north by the river Euphrates have they stumbled and fallen.

7 » ¿Quién es éste, que sube como el río Nilo, cuyas aguas se desbordan como un torrente?

Who is this who rises up like the Nile, whose waters toss themselves like the rivers?

8 E gipto se ensanchó como un río, como las agitadas aguas de un río dijo: “Subiré y cubriré la tierra, destruiré a las ciudades y a sus habitantes.”

Egypt rises up like the Nile, and his waters toss themselves like the rivers: and he says, I will rise up, I will cover the earth; I will destroy cities and its inhabitants.

9 ¡ Que ataque la caballería! ¡Que avancen los carros de combate! ¡Que salgan los guerreros etíopes! ¡Que se cubran con escudos los libios! ¡Que preparen sus arcos los lidios!

Go up, you horses; and rage, you chariots; and let the mighty men go out: Cush and Put, who handle the shield; and the Ludim, who handle and bend the bow.

10 ¡ Ese día es del Señor, el Dios de los ejércitos! ¡Es un día de retribución, para vengarse de sus enemigos! ¡La espada se hartará de matar! ¡Se embriagará de la sangre del enemigo, que será una ofrenda para el Señor, Dios de los ejércitos, en la tierra del norte, a orillas del río Éufrates!

For that day is of the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour and be satiate, and shall drink its fill of their blood; for the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, has a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.

11 ¡ Sube a Galaad, virginal Egipto, y busca un remedio! Pero aunque multipliques las medicinas, no hay remedio para ti.

Go up into Gilead, and take balm, virgin daughter of Egypt: in vain do you use many medicines; there is no healing for you.

12 L as naciones supieron de tu afrenta, y tu clamor llenó la tierra, porque un guerrero chocaba contra otro, y juntos cayeron los dos.»

The nations have heard of your shame, and the earth is full of your cry; for the mighty man has stumbled against the mighty, they are fallen both of them together.

13 É ste es el mensaje del Señor al profeta Jeremías, acerca del ataque del rey Nabucodonosor de Babilonia contra la tierra de Egipto:

The word that Yahweh spoke to Jeremiah the prophet, how that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon should come and strike the land of Egypt.

14 « ¡Anúncienlo en Egipto! ¡Háganlo saber en Migdol! ¡Denlo a conocer en Menfis y en Tafnes! ¡Díganles que se levanten y se preparen, porque la espada va a acabar con su comarca!

Declare in Egypt, and publish in Migdol, and publish in Memphis and in Tahpanhes: say, Stand up, and prepare; for the sword has devoured around you.

15 ¿ Por qué se vino abajo tu poderoso? No pudo mantenerse firme, porque el Señor lo derribó.

Why are your strong ones swept away? they didn’t stand, because Yahweh pushed them.

16 T us caídos se multiplicaron; cayeron, y uno a otro se dicen: “Levántate, y volvamos a nuestro pueblo, a la tierra que nos vio nacer; ¡huyamos de la espada vencedora!”

He made many to stumble, yes, they fell one on another: and they said, Arise, and let us go again to our own people, and to the land of our birth, from the oppressing sword.

17 A lgunos gritan: “¡El faraón es ‘mucho ruido’! ¡El rey de Egipto es ‘pocas nueces’!”

They cried there, Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise; he has let the appointed time pass by.

18 P ero viene uno que es imponente como el monte Tabor entre los montes, imponente como el monte Carmelo junto al mar. —Palabra del Rey, cuyo nombre es el Señor de los ejércitos.

As I live, says the King, whose name is Yahweh of Armies, surely like Tabor among the mountains, and like Carmel by the sea, so shall he come.

19 » Por eso, habitantes de Egipto, ¡prepárense para ir al cautiverio! Porque Menfis quedará asolada, ¡convertida en un desierto deshabitado!

You daughter who dwells in Egypt, furnish yourself to go into captivity; for Memphis shall become a desolation, and shall be burnt up, without inhabitant.

20 » Egipto es una becerra hermosa. Pero del norte viene su destrucción.

Egypt is a very beautiful heifer; but destruction out of the north has come, it has come.

21 H asta los soldados mercenarios que combaten a su lado parecen becerros engordados. Pero también ellos retroceden y huyen sin detenerse, porque les llegó el día de la derrota, la hora de su castigo.

Also her hired men in the middle of her are like calves of the stall; for they also are turned back, they are fled away together, they didn’t stand: for the day of their calamity has come on them, the time of their visitation.

22 » ¡Egipto silva como serpiente que huye! Llegan ya sus enemigos, y lo atacan con hachas, como si fueran leñadores.

The sound of it shall go like the serpent; for they shall march with an army, and come against her with axes, as wood cutters.

23 D erribarán sus bosques, aunque sean impenetrables, porque su ejército es incontable; ¡son más numerosos que una plaga de langostas! —Palabra del Señor.

They shall cut down her forest, says Yahweh, though it can’t be searched; because they are more than the locusts, and are innumerable.

24 » Los habitantes de Egipto quedarán en vergüenza, porque su país caerá en poder del pueblo del norte.»

The daughter of Egypt shall be disappointed; she shall be delivered into the hand of the people of the north.

25 E l Señor de los ejércitos y Dios de Israel ha dicho: «Voy a castigar a Amón, el dios de Tebas, y a Egipto, y a sus dioses y reyes; ¡lo mismo al faraón que a los que en él confían!

Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says: Behold, I will punish Amon of No, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with her gods, and her kings; even Pharaoh, and those who trust in him:

26 V oy a entregarlos en manos de los que quieren matarlos; en manos de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, y de sus siervos. Pero después Egipto volverá a ser habitado, como antes fue. —Palabra del Señor.

and I will deliver them into the hand of those who seek their lives, and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of his servants; and afterwards it shall be inhabited, as in the days of old, says Yahweh.

27 » Pero tú, Jacob, siervo mío, no temas; ¡no pierdas el ánimo, Israel! Porque yo te rescataré de ese país lejano; yo salvaré a tus descendientes del país donde ahora son cautivos. Y Jacob volverá, y descansará y prosperará, y no habrá nadie que le infunda temor.

But don’t you be afraid, Jacob my servant, neither be dismayed, Israel: for, behold, I will save you from afar, and your offspring from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and shall be quiet and at ease, and no one shall make him afraid.

28 T ú, Jacob, siervo mío, no temas, porque yo estoy contigo, Yo destruiré a todas las naciones entre las cuales te he dispersado, pero a ti no te destruiré del todo, sino que te daré un castigo justo, aunque de ninguna manera dejaré de castigarte.» —Palabra del Señor.

Don’t you be afraid, O Jacob my servant, says Yahweh; for I am with you: for I will make a full end of all the nations where I have driven you; but I will not make a full end of you, but I will correct you in measure, and will in no way leave you unpunished.
