1 J acob se quedó a vivir en la tierra de Canaán, donde su padre había vivido.

Jacob lived in the land of his father’s travels, in the land of Canaan.

2 É sta es la historia de la familia de Jacob: José tenía diecisiete años de edad, y apacentaba las ovejas con sus hermanos. El joven José estaba con los hijos de Bilá y con los hijos de Zilpa, las mujeres de su padre; y José informaba a su padre de la mala fama de ellos.

This is the history of the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father’s wives. Joseph brought an evil report of them to their father.

3 I srael amaba a José más que a todos sus hijos, porque lo había tenido en su vejez; por eso le hizo una túnica de diversos colores.

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a coat of many colors.

4 A l ver sus hermanos que su padre lo amaba más que a todos ellos, lo odiaban y no podían hablarle de manera pacífica.

His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, and they hated him, and couldn’t speak peaceably to him.

5 J osé tuvo un sueño, y se lo contó a sus hermanos. Pero ellos llegaron a odiarlo aún más.

Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him all the more.

6 Y él les dijo: «Escuchen ahora este sueño que tuve:

He said to them, “Please hear this dream which I have dreamed:

7 R esulta que estábamos en medio del campo haciendo manojos, y mi manojo se levantaba y se quedaba derecho, mientras que los manojos de ustedes estaban alrededor del mío y se inclinaban ante él.»

for behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and behold, your sheaves came around, and bowed down to my sheaf.”

8 S us hermanos le respondieron: «¿Acaso vas a ser tú nuestro rey, o nos vas a gobernar?» Y por causa de sus sueños y sus palabras lo odiaron aún más.

His brothers said to him, “Will you indeed reign over us? Or will you indeed have dominion over us?” They hated him all the more for his dreams and for his words.

9 P ero José volvió a tener otro sueño, y se lo contó a sus hermanos. Les dijo: «Resulta que tuve otro sueño. Esta vez, el sol y la luna y once estrellas se inclinaban ante mí.»

He dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, “Behold, I have dreamed yet another dream: and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me.”

10 Y les contó esto a su padre y a sus hermanos, y su padre lo reprendió. Le dijo: «¿Qué clase de sueño es éste que tuviste? ¿Acaso tu madre, tus hermanos y yo vendremos a postrarnos ante ti?»

He told it to his father and to his brothers. His father rebuked him, and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Will I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves down to you to the earth?”

11 Y sus hermanos le tenían envidia, pero su padre meditaba acerca de esto.

His brothers envied him, but his father kept this saying in mind.

12 C uando sus hermanos fueron a apacentar las ovejas de su padre en Siquén,

His brothers went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem.

13 I srael le dijo a José: «Tus hermanos están apacentando las ovejas en Siquén. Ven, que voy a enviarte con ellos.» Y José respondió: «Aquí me tienes.»

Israel said to Joseph, “Aren’t your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them.” He said to him, “Here I am.”

14 E ntonces Israel le dijo: «Anda y ve si están bien tus hermanos y las ovejas, y vuelve a darme la noticia.» Y lo envió Israel desde el valle de Hebrón, y José llegó a Siquén.

He said to him, “Go now, see whether it is well with your brothers, and well with the flock; and bring me word again.” So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

15 M ientras José andaba errante por el campo, un hombre lo halló y le preguntó: «¿Qué buscas?»

A certain man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the field. The man asked him, “What are you looking for?”

16 J osé respondió: «Estoy buscando a mis hermanos; por favor, hazme saber dónde están apacentando.»

He said, “I am looking for my brothers. Tell me, please, where they are feeding the flock.”

17 Y aquel hombre le respondió: «Ya se fueron de aquí. Pero les oí decir que iban a Dotán.» José fue entonces en busca de sus hermanos, y los encontró en Dotán.

The man said, “They have left here, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’” Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan.

18 C uando ellos lo vieron a lo lejos, antes de que él se acercara a ellos hicieron planes contra él para matarlo.

They saw him afar off, and before he came near to them, they conspired against him to kill him.

19 S e dijeron el uno al otro: «Miren, aquí viene el soñador.

They said to one another, “Behold, this dreamer comes.

20 ¡ Vamos, matémoslo ya! Echémoslo en uno de los pozos, y digamos que alguna mala bestia se lo comió. ¡Y vamos a ver qué pasa con sus sueños!»

Come now therefore, and let’s kill him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, ‘An evil animal has devoured him.’ We will see what will become of his dreams.”

21 P ero Rubén, al oír esto, lo libró de sus manos y dijo: «No lo matemos.»

Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand, and said, “Let’s not take his life.”

22 A demás, para librarlo de sus manos y hacerlo volver a su padre, Rubén les dijo: «No derramen sangre. Arrójenlo en este pozo que está en el desierto, pero no le pongan la mano encima.»

Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand on him”—that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father.

23 A sí que, cuando José llegó a donde estaban sus hermanos, ellos le quitaron su túnica, la túnica de colores que llevaba puesta,

When Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped Joseph of his coat, the coat of many colors that was on him;

24 y por la fuerza lo arrojaron en el pozo. Pero el pozo estaba seco; no tenía agua.

and they took him, and threw him into the pit. The pit was empty. There was no water in it.

25 L uego se sentaron a comer su pan. Pero al levantar la vista, vieron que de Galaad venía una caravana de ismaelitas, con sus camellos cargados de aromas, bálsamo y mirra, que llevaban a Egipto.

They sat down to eat bread, and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing spices and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.

26 E ntonces Judá les dijo a sus hermanos: «¿Qué ganamos con matar a nuestro hermano y encubrir su muerte?

Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?

27 V engan, vamos a vendérselo a los ismaelitas. No levantemos la mano contra él, pues él es nuestro hermano, nuestra propia carne.» Y sus hermanos estuvieron de acuerdo con él.

Come, and let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not let our hand be on him; for he is our brother, our flesh.” His brothers listened to him.

28 C uando los mercaderes madianitas pasaron por allí, ellos sacaron del pozo a José y lo vendieron a los ismaelitas por veinte monedas de plata. Y ellos se llevaron a José a Egipto.

Midianites who were merchants passed by, and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. They brought Joseph into Egypt.

29 C uando Rubén volvió al pozo y no halló a José adentro, se rasgó los vestidos;

Reuben returned to the pit; and saw that Joseph wasn’t in the pit; and he tore his clothes.

30 l uego volvió a donde estaban sus hermanos, y les dijo: «¡El niño ya no está! Y yo, ¿a dónde iré?»

He returned to his brothers, and said, “The child is no more; and I, where will I go?”

31 E ntonces ellos tomaron la túnica de José, degollaron un cabrito, y con la sangre tiñeron la túnica;

They took Joseph’s coat, and killed a male goat, and dipped the coat in the blood.

32 y enviaron la túnica de colores a su padre. Se la presentaron y dijeron: «Esto es lo que hemos hallado. Fíjate si es o no la túnica de tu hijo.»

They took the coat of many colors, and they brought it to their father, and said, “We have found this. Examine it, now, whether it is your son’s coat or not.”

33 C uando Jacob la reconoció, dijo: «¡Es la túnica de mi hijo! ¡Alguna mala bestia se lo comió! ¡José ha sido despedazado!»

He recognized it, and said, “It is my son’s coat. An evil animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces.”

34 E ntonces se rasgó los vestidos, puso cilicio sobre sus lomos, y durante muchos días guardó luto por su hijo.

Jacob tore his clothes, and put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days.

35 T odos sus hijos y todas sus hijas acudieron a consolarlo, pero él no quiso ser consolado, sino que dijo: «Bajaré al sepulcro, donde está mi hijo, guardando luto por él.» Y lo lloró su padre.

All his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. He said, “For I will go down to Sheol to my son mourning.” His father wept for him.

36 E n Egipto, los madianitas lo vendieron a Potifar, que era un oficial del faraón y capitán de la guardia.

The Midianites sold him into Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, the captain of the guard.
