1 T hen Job answered and said,

А Йов відповів та й сказав:

2 H ear diligently my speech; And let this be your consolations.

Уважно послухайте слово моє, і нехай буде мені це розрадою вашою!

3 S uffer me, and I also will speak; And after that I have spoken, mock on.

Перетерпіть мені, а я промовлятиму, по промові ж моїй насміхатися будеш.

4 A s for me, is my complaint to man? And why should I not be impatient?

Хіба до людини моє нарікання? Чи не мав би чого стати нетерпеливим мій дух?

5 M ark me, and be astonished, And lay your hand upon your mouth.

Оберніться до мене й жахніться, та руку на уста свої покладіть...

6 E ven when I remember I am troubled, And horror taketh hold on my flesh.

І якщо я згадаю про це, то жахаюсь, і морозом проймається тіло моє...

7 W herefore do the wicked live, Become old, yea, wax mighty in power?

Чого несправедливі живуть, доживають до віку, й багатством зміцняються?

8 T heir seed is established with them in their sight, And their offspring before their eyes.

Насіння їх міцно стоїть перед ними, при них, а їхні нащадки на їхніх очах...

9 T heir houses are safe from fear, Neither is the rod of God upon them.

Доми їхні то спокій від страху, і над ними нема бича Божого.

10 T heir bull gendereth, and faileth not; Their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf.

Спинається бик його, і не даремно, зачинає корова його, й не скидає.

11 T hey send forth their little ones like a flock, And their children dance.

Вони випускають своїх молодят, як отару, а їх діти вибрикують.

12 T hey sing to the timbrel and harp, And rejoice at the sound of the pipe.

Вони голос здіймають при бубні та цитрі, і веселяться при звуку сопілки.

13 T hey spend their days in prosperity, And in a moment they go down to Sheol.

Провадять в добрі свої дні, і сходять в спокої в шеол.

14 A nd they say unto God, Depart from us; For we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.

А до Бога говорять вони: Уступися від нас, ми ж доріг Твоїх знати не хочем!

15 W hat is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

Що таке Всемогутній, що будем служити Йому? І що скористаєм, як будем благати Його?

16 L o, their prosperity is not in their hand: The counsel of the wicked is far from me.

Та не в їхній руці добро їхнє, далека від мене порада безбожних...

17 H ow oft is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out? That their calamity cometh upon them? That God distributeth sorrows in his anger?

Як часто світильник безбожним згасає, і приходить на них їх нещастя? Він приділює в гніві Своїм на них пастки!

18 T hat they are as stubble before the wind, And as chaff that the storm carrieth away?

Вони будуть, немов та солома на вітрі, і немов та полова, що буря схопила її!

19 Y e say, God layeth up his iniquity for his children. Let him recompense it unto himself, that he may know it:

Бог ховає синам його кривду Свою та нехай надолужить самому йому, і він знатиме!

20 L et his own eyes see his destruction, And let him drink of the wrath of the Almighty.

Нехай його очі побачать нещастя його, й бодай сам він пив гнів Всемогутнього!

21 F or what careth he for his house after him, When the number of his months is cut off?

Яке бо старання його про родину по ньому, як для нього число його місяців вже перелічене?

22 S hall any teach God knowledge, Seeing he judgeth those that are high?

Чи буде хто Бога навчати знання, Його, що й небесних судитиме?

23 O ne dieth in his full strength, Being wholly at ease and quiet:

Оцей в повній силі своїй помирає, увесь він спокійний та мирний,

24 H is pails are full of milk, And the marrow of his bones is moistened.

діжки його повні були молока, а мізок костей його свіжий.

25 A nd another dieth in bitterness of soul, And never tasteth of good.

А цей помирає з душею огірченою, і доброго не споживав він,

26 T hey lie down alike in the dust, And the worm covereth them.

та порохом будуть лежати обоє вони, і черва їх покриє...

27 B ehold, I know your thoughts, And the devices wherewith ye would wrong me.

Тож я знаю думки ваші й задуми, що хочете кривдити ними мене.

28 F or ye say, Where is the house of the prince? And where is the tent wherein the wicked dwelt?

Бож питаєте ви: Де князів дім, і де намет пробування безбожних?

29 H ave ye not asked wayfaring men? And do ye not know their evidences,

Тож спитайтеся тих, що дорогою йдуть, а їхніх ознак не затаюйте:

30 T hat the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity? That they are led forth to the day of wrath?

що буває врятований злий в день загибелі, на день гніву відводиться в захист!

31 W ho shall declare his way to his face? And who shall repay him what he hath done?

Хто йому розповість у лице про дорогу його? А коли наробив, хто йому надолужить?

32 Y et shall he be borne to the grave, And men shall keep watch over the tomb.

І на кладовище буде проваджений він, і про могилу подбають...

33 T he clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, And all men shall draw after him, As there were innumerable before him.

Скиби долини солодкі йому, і тягнеться кожна людина за ним, а тим, хто попереду нього, немає числа...

34 H ow then comfort ye me in vain, Seeing in your answers there remaineth only falsehood?

І як ви мене потішаєте марністю, коли з ваших відповідей зостається сама тільки фальш?...
