1 H ear, my sons, the instruction of a father, And attend to know understanding:

Послухайте, діти, напучення батькового, і прислухайтеся, щоб навчитися розуму,

2 F or I give you good doctrine; Forsake ye not my law.

бо даю я вам добру науку: закона мого не кидайте,

3 F or I was a son unto my father, Tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.

бо сином у батька свого я був, пещений й єдиний у неньки своєї.

4 A nd he taught me, and said unto me: Let thy heart retain my words; Keep my commandments, and live;

І навчав він мене, і мені говорив: Нехай держиться серце твоє моїх слів, стережи мої заповіді та й живи!

5 G et wisdom, get understanding; Forget not, neither decline from the words of my mouth;

Здобудь мудрість, здобудь собі розум, не забудь, і не цурайся слів моїх уст,

6 F orsake her not, and she will preserve thee; Love her, and she will keep thee.

не кидай її й вона буде тебе стерегти! Кохай ти її й вона буде тебе пильнувати!

7 W isdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom; Yea, with all thy getting get understanding.

Початок премудрости мудрість здобудь, а за ввесь свій маєток здобудь собі розуму!

8 E xalt her, and she will promote thee; She will bring thee to honor, when thou dost embrace her.

Тримай її високо і підійме тебе, ушанує тебе, як її ти пригорнеш:

9 S he will give to thy head a chaplet of grace; A crown of beauty will she deliver to thee.

вона дасть голові твоїй гарний вінок, пишну корону тобі подарує!

10 H ear, O my son, and receive my sayings; And the years of thy life shall be many.

Послухай, мій сину, й бери ти слова мої, і помножаться роки твойого життя,

11 I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in paths of uprightness.

дороги премудрости вчу я тебе, стежками прямими проваджу тебе:

12 W hen thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; And if thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.

коли підеш, то крок твій не буде тісний, а коли побіжиш не спіткнешся!

13 T ake fast hold of instruction; let her not go: Keep her; for she is thy life.

Міцно тримайся напучування, не лишай, його стережи, воно бо життя твоє!

14 E nter not into the path of the wicked, And walk not in the way of evil men.

На стежку безбожних не йди, і не ходи на дорогу лихих,

15 A void it, pass not by it; Turn from it, and pass on.

покинь ти її, не йди нею, усунься від неї й мини,

16 F or they sleep not, except they do evil; And their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.

бо вони не заснуть, якщо злого не вчинять, відійметься сон їм, як не зроблять кому, щоб спіткнувся!...

17 F or they eat the bread of wickedness, And drink the wine of violence.

Бо вони хліб безбожжя їдять, і вино грабежу попивають.

18 B ut the path of the righteous is as the dawning light, That shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

А путь праведних ніби те світло ясне, що світить все більше та більш аж до повного дня!

19 T he way of the wicked is as darkness: They know not at what they stumble.

Дорога ж безбожних як темність: не знають, об що спотикнуться...

20 M y son, attend to my words; Incline thine ear unto my sayings.

Мій сину, прислухуйся до моїх слів, до речей моїх ухо своє нахили!

21 L et them not depart from thine eyes; Keep them in the midst of thy heart.

Нехай не відійдуть вони від очей твоїх, бережи їх в середині серця свого!

22 F or they are life unto those that find them, And health to all their flesh.

Бо життя вони тим, хто їх знайде, а для тіла усього його лікування.

23 K eep thy heart with all diligence; For out of it are the issues of life.

Над усе, що лише стережеться, серце своє стережи, бо з нього походить життя.

24 P ut away from thee a wayward mouth, And perverse lips put far from thee.

Відкинь ти від себе лукавство уст, віддали ти від себе крутійство губ.

25 L et thine eyes look right on, And let thine eyelids look straight before thee.

Нехай дивляться очі твої уперед, а повіки твої нехай перед тобою простують.

26 M ake level the path of thy feet, And let all thy ways be established.

Стежку ніг своїх вирівняй, і стануть міцні всі дороги твої:

27 T urn not to the right hand nor to the left: Remove thy foot from evil.

не вступайся ні вправо, ні вліво, усунь свою ногу від зла!
