1 A nd he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's mouth.

І наказав він тому, що над домом його, говорячи: Понаповнюй мішки цих людей їжею, скільки зможуть вони нести. І поклади срібло кожного до отвору мішка його.

2 A nd put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack's mouth of the youngest, and his grain money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.

А чашу мою, чашу срібну, поклади до отвору мішка наймолодшого, та срібло за хліб його. І зробив той за словом Йосиповим, яке він сказав був.

3 A s soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.

Розвиднилось рано вранці, і люди ці були відпущені, вони та їхні осли.

4 A nd when they were gone out of the city, and were not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?

Вони вийшли з міста, ще не віддалилися, а Йосип сказав до того, що над домом його: Устань, побіжи за тими людьми, і дожени їх, та й скажи їм: Нащо ви заплатили злом за добро?

5 I s not this that in which my lord drinketh, and whereby he indeed divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.

Хіба це не та чаша, що з неї п'є пан мій, і він, ворожачи, ворожить нею? І зле ви зробили, що вчинили таке.

6 A nd he overtook them, and he spake unto them these words.

І той їх догнав, і сказав їм ті слова.

7 A nd they said unto him, Wherefore speaketh my lord such words as these? Far be it from thy servants that they should do such a thing.

А вони відказали йому: Нащо пан мій говорить отакі то слова? Далеке рабам твоїм, щоб зробити таку річ...

8 B ehold, the money, which we found in our sacks' mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord's house silver or gold?

Таж срібло, що знайшли ми в отворах наших мішків, ми вернули тобі з Краю ханаанського. А як би ми вкрали з дому пана твого срібло чи золото?

9 W ith whomsoever of thy servants it be found, let him die, and we also will be my lord's bondmen.

У кого із рабів твоїх вона, чаша, буде знайдена, то помре він, а також ми станемо рабами моєму панові.

10 A nd he said, Now also let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my bondman; and ye shall be blameless.

А той відказав: Тож тепер, як ви сказали, так нехай буде воно! У кого вона знайдена буде, той стане мені за раба, а ви будете чисті.

11 T hen they hasted, and took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.

І поспішно поспускали вони кожен свого мішка на землю. І порозв'язували кожен мішка свого.

12 A nd he searched, and began at the eldest, and left off at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.

І став він шукати. Розпочав від найстаршого, а скінчив наймолодшим. І знайдена чаша в мішку Веніяминовім!

13 T hen they rent their clothes, and laded every man his ass, and returned to the city.

І пороздирали вони свою одіж!... І кожен нав'ючив осла свого, і вернулись до міста.

14 A nd Judah and his brethren came to Joseph's house; and he was yet there: and they fell before him on the ground.

І ввійшли Юда й брати його до дому Йосипа, а він ще був там. І попадали вони перед лицем його на землю.

15 A nd Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? know ye not that such a man as I can indeed divine?

І сказав до них Йосип: Що це за вчинок, що ви зробили? Хіба ви не знали, що справді відгадає такий муж, як я?

16 A nd Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord's bondmen, both we, and he also in whose hand the cup is found.

А Юда промовив: Що ми скажемо панові моєму? Що будемо говорити? Чим виправдаємось? Бог знайшов провину твоїх рабів! Ось ми раби панові моєму, і ми, і той, що в руці його була знайдена чаша.

17 A nd he said, Far be it from me that I should do so: the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my bondman; but as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.

А Йосип відказав: Далеке мені, щоб зробити оце. Чоловік, що в руці його була знайдена чаша, він буде мені за раба! А ви йдіть із миром до вашого батька.

18 T hen Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh, my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant; for thou art even as Pharaoh.

І приступив до нього Юда та й промовив: О мій пане, нехай скаже раб твій слово до ушей пана свого, і нехай не палає гнів твій на раба твого, бо ти такий, як фараон.

19 M y lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?

Пан мій запитав був рабів своїх, говорячи: Чи є в вас батько або брат?

20 A nd we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother; and his father loveth him.

І сказали ми до пана мого: Є в нас батько старий та мале дитя його старости, а брат його вмер. І позостався він сам у своєї матері, а батько його любить.

21 A nd thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.

А ти був сказав своїм рабам: Зведіть до мене його, і нехай я кину своїм оком на нього.

22 A nd we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.

І сказали ми до пана мого: Не може той хлопець покинути батька свого. А покине він батька свого, то помре той.

23 A nd thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.

А ти сказав своїм рабам: Коли не зійде з вами наймолодший ваш брат, не побачите більше лиця мого.

24 A nd it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.

І сталося, коли ми зійшли були до раба твого, до нашого батька, то ми розповіли йому слова мого пана.

25 A nd our father said, Go again, buy us a little food.

А батько наш сказав: Верніться, купіть нам трохи їжі.

26 A nd we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man's face, expect our youngest brother be with us.

А ми відказали: Не можемо зійти.

27 A nd thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons:

І сказав до нас раб твій, наш батько: Ви знаєте, що двох була породила мені жінка моя.

28 a nd the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I have not seen him since:

Та пішов від мене один, і я сказав: справді, дійсно розшарпаний він... І я не бачив його аж дотепер.

29 a nd if ye take this one also from me, and harm befall him, ye will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.

А заберете ви також цього від мене, і спіткає його нещастя, то зведете ви сивину мою цим злом до шеолу.

30 N ow therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad is not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad's life;

А тепер, коли я прийду до раба твого, мого батька, а юнака не буде з нами, а душа його зв'язана з душею тією,

31 i t will come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants will bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to Sheol.

То станеться, коли він побачить, що юнака нема, то помре. І зведуть твої раби сивину раба твого, нашого батька, у смутку до шеолу...

32 F or thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then shall I bear the blame to my father for ever.

Бо раб твій поручився за юнака батькові своєму, кажучи: Коли я не приведу його до тебе, то згрішу перед батьком своїм на всі дні!

33 N ow therefore, let thy servant, I pray thee, abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.

А тепер нехай же сяде твій раб замість того юнака за раба панові моєму. А юнак нехай іде з своїми братами!...

34 F or how shall I go up to my father, if the lad be not with me? lest I see the evil that shall come on my father.

Бо як я прийду до батька свого, а юнака зо мною нема? Щоб не побачити мені того нещастя, що спіткає мого батька.
