1 B ut I say that so long as the heir is a child, he differeth nothing from a bondservant though he is lord of all;

Тож кажу я: поки спадкоємець дитина, він нічим від раба не різниться, хоч він пан над усім,

2 b ut is under guardians and stewards until the day appointed of the father.

але під опікунами та керівниками знаходиться він аж до часу, що визначив батько.

3 S o we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the rudiments of the world:

Так і ми, поки дітьми були, то були поневолені стихіями світу.

4 b ut when the fulness of the time came, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

Як настало ж виповнення часу, Бог послав Свого Сина, що родився від жони, та став під Законом,

5 t hat he might redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

щоб викупити підзаконних, щоб усиновлення ми прийняли.

6 A nd because ye are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

А що ви сини, Бог послав у ваші серця Духа Сина Свого, що викликує: Авва, Отче!

7 S o that thou art no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.

Тому ти вже не раб, але син. А як син, то й спадкоємець Божий через Христа.

8 H owbeit at that time, not knowing God, ye were in bondage to them that by nature are no gods:

Та тоді, не знаючи Бога, служили ви тим, що з істоти богами вони не були.

9 b ut now that ye have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how turn ye back again to the weak and beggarly rudiments, whereunto ye desire to be in bondage over again?

А тепер, як пізнали ви Бога, чи краще як Бог вас пізнав, як вертаєтесь знов до слабих та вбогих стихій, яким хочете знов, як давніше, служити?

10 Y e observe days, and months, and seasons, and years.

Ви вважаєте пильно на дні та на місяці, і на пори та роки.

11 I am afraid of you, lest by any means I have bestowed labor upon you in vain.

Я боюся за вас, чи не дармо я працював коло вас?...

12 I beseech you, brethren, become as I am, for I also am become as ye are. Ye did me no wrong:

Прошу я вас, браття, будьте, як я, бо й я такий самий, як ви. Нічим ви мене не покривдили!

13 b ut ye know that because of an infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you the first time:

І знаєте ви, що в немочі тіла я перше звіщав вам Євангелію,

14 a nd that which was a temptation to you in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but ye received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.

ви ж моєю спокусою в тілі моїм не погордували, і мене не відкинули, але, немов Ангола Божого, ви прийняли мене, як Христа Ісуса!

15 W here then is that gratulation of yourselves? for I bear you witness, that, if possible, ye would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.

Тож де ваше тодішнє блаженство? Свідкую бо вам, що якби було можна, то ви вибрали б очі свої та мені віддали б!

16 S o then am I become your enemy, by telling you the truth?

Чи ж я став для вас ворогом, правду говорячи вам?

17 T hey zealously seek you in no good way; nay, they desire to shut you out, that ye may seek them.

Недобре пильнують про вас, але вас відлучити хочуть, щоб ви пильнували про них.

18 B ut it is good to be zealously sought in a good matter at all times, and not only when I am present with you.

То добре, пильнувати про добре постійно, а не тільки тоді, як приходжу до вас.

19 M y little children, of whom I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you--

Дітки мої, я знову для вас терплю муки породу, поки образ Христа не відіб'ється в вас!

20 b ut I could wish to be present with you now, and to change my tone; for I am perplexed about you.

Я хотів би тепер бути в вас та змінити свій голос, бо маю я сумнів за вас.

21 T ell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?

Скажіть мені ви, що хочете бути під Законом: чи не слухаєтесь ви Закону?

22 F or it is written, that Abraham had two sons, one by the handmaid, and one by the freewoman.

Бо написано: Мав Авраам двох синів, одного від рабині, а другого від вільної.

23 H owbeit the son by the handmaid is born after the flesh; but the son by the freewoman is born through promise.

Але той, хто був від рабині, народився за тілом, а хто був від вільної, за обітницею.

24 W hich things contain an allegory: for these women are two covenants; one from mount Sinai, bearing children unto bondage, which is Hagar.

Розуміти це треба інакше, бо це два заповіти: один від гори Сінай, що в рабство народжує, а він то Аґар.

25 N ow this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia and answereth to the Jerusalem that now is: for she is in bondage with her children.

Бо Аґар то гора Сінай в Арабії, а відповідає сучасному Єрусалимові, який у рабстві з своїми дітьми.

26 B ut the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is our mother.

А вишній Єрусалим вільний, він мати всім нам!

27 F or it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; Break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: For more are the children of the desolate than of her that hath the husband.

Бо написано: Звеселися, неплідна, ти, що не родиш! Гукай та викликуй ти, що в породі не мучилась, бо в полишеної значно більше дітей, ніж у тієї, що має вона чоловіка!

28 N ow we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise.

А ви, браття, діти обітниці за Ісаком!

29 B ut as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, so also it is now.

Але як і тоді, хто родився за тілом, переслідував тих, хто родився за духом, так само й тепер.

30 H owbeit what saith the scripture? Cast out the handmaid and her son: for the son of the handmaid shall not inherit with the son of the freewoman.

Та що каже Писання? Прожени рабиню й сина її, бо не буде спадкувати син рабині разом із сином вільної.

31 W herefore, brethren, we are not children of a handmaid, but of the freewoman.

Тому, браття, не сини ми рабині, але вільної!
