1 B ut I say that so long as the heir is a child, he differeth nothing from a bondservant though he is lord of all;

2 b ut is under guardians and stewards until the day appointed of the father.

sólo que está bajo tutores y guardianes hasta el tiempo señalado por el padre.

3 S o we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the rudiments of the world:

Así también nosotros, cuando éramos niños, vivíamos en esclavitud y sujetos a los principios básicos del mundo.

4 b ut when the fulness of the time came, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

Pero cuando se cumplió el tiempo señalado, Dios envió a su Hijo, que nació de una mujer y sujeto a la ley,

5 t hat he might redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

para que redimiera a los que estaban sujetos a la ley, a fin de que recibiéramos la adopción de hijos.

6 A nd because ye are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

Y por cuanto ustedes son hijos, Dios envió a sus corazones el Espíritu de su Hijo, el cual clama: «¡Abba, Padre!»

7 S o that thou art no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.

Así que ya no eres esclavo, sino hijo; y si eres hijo, también eres heredero de Dios por medio de Cristo. Exhortación contra el volver a la esclavitud

8 H owbeit at that time, not knowing God, ye were in bondage to them that by nature are no gods:

Ciertamente, en otro tiempo, cuando ustedes no conocían a Dios, servían a los que por naturaleza no son dioses;

9 b ut now that ye have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how turn ye back again to the weak and beggarly rudiments, whereunto ye desire to be in bondage over again?

pero ahora que conocen a Dios, o más bien, que Dios los conoce a ustedes, ¿cómo es que han vuelto de nuevo a los débiles y pobres rudimentos, a los cuales quieren volver a esclavizarse?

10 Y e observe days, and months, and seasons, and years.

Ustedes guardan los días, los meses, los tiempos y los años.

11 I am afraid of you, lest by any means I have bestowed labor upon you in vain.

¡Me temo que, con ustedes, yo he trabajado en vano!

12 I beseech you, brethren, become as I am, for I also am become as ye are. Ye did me no wrong:

Les ruego, hermanos, que se hagan como yo, porque yo también me he hecho como ustedes. Ningún agravio me han hecho.

13 b ut ye know that because of an infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you the first time:

Bien saben ustedes que, debido a una enfermedad del cuerpo, les anuncié el evangelio al principio,

14 a nd that which was a temptation to you in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but ye received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.

y ustedes no me despreciaron ni desecharon por la prueba que tenía en el cuerpo, sino que me recibieron como a un ángel de Dios, como a Cristo Jesús.

15 W here then is that gratulation of yourselves? for I bear you witness, that, if possible, ye would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.

¿Dónde, pues, está esa satisfacción que experimentaban? Yo doy testimonio de que, de haber podido, ustedes se habrían sacado sus propios ojos, para dármelos.

16 S o then am I become your enemy, by telling you the truth?

¿Acaso me he vuelto enemigo de ustedes, por decirles la verdad?

17 T hey zealously seek you in no good way; nay, they desire to shut you out, that ye may seek them.

Algunos muestran mucho interés por ustedes, pero no para bien, sino que quieren apartarlos de nosotros para que ustedes muestren interés por ellos.

18 B ut it is good to be zealously sought in a good matter at all times, and not only when I am present with you.

Qué bien que muestren interés en lo bueno siempre, y no sólo cuando estoy presente con ustedes.

19 M y little children, of whom I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you--

Hijitos míos, por quienes vuelvo a sufrir dolores de parto, hasta que Cristo sea formado en ustedes,

20 b ut I could wish to be present with you now, and to change my tone; for I am perplexed about you.

quisiera estar con ustedes ahora mismo y cambiar de tono, pues ustedes me tienen perplejo. Alegoría de Sara y Agar

21 T ell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?

Díganme, ustedes que quieren estar sujetos a la ley: ¿no han oído lo que dice la ley?

22 F or it is written, that Abraham had two sons, one by the handmaid, and one by the freewoman.

Porque está escrito que Abrahán tuvo dos hijos; uno de la esclava, y el otro de la libre.

23 H owbeit the son by the handmaid is born after the flesh; but the son by the freewoman is born through promise.

El hijo de la esclava nació conforme a una decisión humana; pero el hijo de la libre nació conforme a la promesa.

24 W hich things contain an allegory: for these women are two covenants; one from mount Sinai, bearing children unto bondage, which is Hagar.

Lo cual es una alegoría, pues estas mujeres son los dos pactos; el uno proviene del monte Sinaí, el cual da hijos para esclavitud; éste es Agar.

25 N ow this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia and answereth to the Jerusalem that now is: for she is in bondage with her children.

Porque Agar es el monte Sinaí en Arabia, y corresponde a la Jerusalén actual, y ésta, junto con sus hijos, está en esclavitud.

26 B ut the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is our mother.

Pero la Jerusalén de arriba, la cual es madre de todos nosotros, es libre.

27 F or it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; Break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: For more are the children of the desolate than of her that hath the husband.

Porque está escrito: «Regocíjate, oh estéril, tú que no das a luz; prorrumpe en júbilo y clama, tú que no tienes dolores de parto; porque más son los hijos de la desolada que los de la que tiene marido.»

28 N ow we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise.

Así que, hermanos, nosotros, como Isaac, somos hijos de la promesa.

29 B ut as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, so also it is now.

Pero como entonces el que había nacido según la carne perseguía al que había nacido según el Espíritu, así también sucede ahora.

30 H owbeit what saith the scripture? Cast out the handmaid and her son: for the son of the handmaid shall not inherit with the son of the freewoman.

Pero ¿qué dice la Escritura? «Echa fuera a la esclava y a su hijo, porque el hijo de la esclava no heredará con el hijo de la libre.»

31 W herefore, brethren, we are not children of a handmaid, but of the freewoman.

De modo, hermanos, que no somos hijos de la esclava, sino de la libre.
