1 T hen I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and, behold, the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.

Dirigí entonces la mirada hacia tanta violencia que se comete bajo el sol, y pude ver que los oprimidos lloran y no hay quien los consuele; y no hay quien los consuele porque el poder está en manos de sus opresores.

2 W herefore I praised the dead that have been long dead more than the living that are yet alive;

Felicité entonces a los que ya han muerto, más que a los que aún viven,

3 y ea, better than them both did I esteem him that hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

aunque más felices que estos dos son los que todavía no han nacido, pues todavía no han visto tanta maldad que se comete bajo el sol.

4 T hen I saw all labor and every skilful work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

También he podido ver que todo el que se afana y tiene éxito en lo que hace despierta la envidia de su prójimo. ¡Y esto también es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu!

5 T he fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.

El necio se cruza de brazos, y acaba por destruirse a sí mismo.

6 B etter is a handful, with quietness, than two handfuls with labor and striving after wind.

Más vale un puñado de descanso que dos puñados de afanes y aflicción de espíritu.

7 T hen I returned and saw vanity under the sun.

Una vez más dirigí la mirada hacia la vanidad que existe bajo el sol.

8 T here is one that is alone, and he hath not a second; yea, he hath neither son nor brother; yet is there no end of all his labor, neither are his eyes satisfied with riches. For whom then, saith he, do I labor, and deprive my soul of good? This also is vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.

Y vi a un hombre solo, sin hijos ni hermanos que lo sucedieran, y que no obstante nunca dejaba de trabajar ni se cansaba de contemplar sus riquezas, ni tampoco se preguntaba: «Y yo, ¿para quién trabajo? ¿Para qué reprimo mi apetito por las cosas buenas?» ¡Y esto también es vanidad, y un trabajo infructuoso!

9 T wo are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor.

Dos son mejor que uno, porque sacan más provecho de sus afanes.

10 F or if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him that is alone when he falleth, and hath not another to lift him up.

Si uno de ellos se tropieza, el otro lo levanta. ¡Pero ay de aquel que tropieza y no hay quien lo levante!

11 A gain, if two lie together, then they have warmth; but how can one be warm alone?

Si dos se acuestan juntos, mutuamente se calientan; pero uno solo no puede calentarse.

12 A nd if a man prevail against him that is alone, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Uno solo puede ser vencido, pero dos presentan resistencia. El cordón de tres hilos no se rompe fácilmente.

13 B etter is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king, who knoweth not how to receive admonition any more.

Mejor es el joven pobre y sabio, que el rey viejo y necio, que no admite consejos.

14 F or out of prison he came forth to be king; yea, even in his kingdom he was born poor.

Porque el joven sabio, aunque haya nacido pobre en el reino del viejo necio, sale de la cárcel para asumir el trono.

15 I saw all the living that walk under the sun, that they were with the youth, the second, that stood up in his stead.

Yo he visto a todos los que viven bajo el sol seguir al joven que sucederá al rey necio.

16 T here was no end of all the people, even of all them over whom he was: yet they that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.

¡La gente que lo sigue es incontable! Y sin embargo, los que vengan después tampoco estarán contentos con él. ¡Y también esto es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu!
