1 A nd the angel of Jehovah came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you:

El ángel del Señor fue de Gilgal a Boquín, y les dijo a los israelitas: «Yo los liberé de Egipto y los llevé a la tierra que prometí dar a sus antepasados, cuando les dije: “Nunca anularé mi pacto con ustedes,

2 a nd ye shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall break down their altars. But ye have not hearkened unto my voice: why have ye done this?

mientras no hagan pacto con los que habitan en esta tierra, gente que tiene altares que ustedes deben destruir.” Pero ustedes no me hicieron caso. ¿Por qué no lo han hecho?

3 W herefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.

Por lo tanto, escúchenme bien: No voy a expulsar de estas tierras a sus habitantes, sino que ellos serán para ustedes como azotes en los costados, y sus dioses los confundirán.»

4 A nd it came to pass, when the angel of Jehovah spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

Cuando el ángel del Señor dijo esto a los israelitas, ellos se echaron a llorar con fuerte voz.

5 A nd they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto Jehovah.

Por eso, a ese lugar lo llamaron Boquín, y allí ofrecieron sacrificios al Señor. Muerte de Josué

6 N ow when Joshua had sent the people away, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.

Josué despidió al pueblo de Israel, y cada uno fue y tomó posesión de su heredad.

7 A nd the people served Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of Jehovah that he had wrought for Israel.

Y mientras vivió Josué, y los ancianos que le sobrevivieron y que habían visto las obras del Señor en favor de Israel, todo el pueblo sirvió al Señor.

8 A nd Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Jehovah, died, being a hundred and ten years old.

Y Josué hijo de Nun, siervo del Señor, murió a la edad de ciento diez años.

9 A nd they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.

Lo sepultaron en Timnat Seraj, que era su heredad, en el monte de Efraín, al norte del monte de Gaas.

10 A nd also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, that knew not Jehovah, nor yet the work which he had wrought for Israel.

Y murió también toda esa generación, y se reunió con sus antepasados. Después de ellos vino otra generación que no conocía al Señor, ni sabía lo que el Señor había hecho por Israel. Apostasía de Israel y surgimiento de los jueces

11 A nd the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and served the Baalim;

Los israelitas hicieron lo malo a los ojos del Señor, y adoraron a los baales.

12 a nd they forsook Jehovah, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples that were round about them, and bowed themselves down unto them: and they provoked Jehovah to anger.

Abandonaron al Señor, el Dios que sacó a sus antepasados de la tierra de Egipto, y empezaron a adorar a los dioses de los pueblos que vivían a su alrededor, con lo que provocaron el enojo del Señor.

13 A nd they forsook Jehovah, and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

Se apartaron del Señor, para adorar a Baal y a Astarot.

14 A nd the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that despoiled them; and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

Por eso el Señor se enojó contra el pueblo de Israel y los entregó en manos de ladrones, que lo despojaron de todo; los dejó a merced de los enemigos que lo rodeaban, a los cuales ya no pudo vencer.

15 W hithersoever they went out, the hand of Jehovah was against them for evil, as Jehovah had spoken, and as Jehovah had sworn unto them: and they were sore distressed.

A dondequiera que iban, la mano del Señor estaba en contra de ellos para su mal, y tal como se lo había jurado, se vieron en gran aflicción.

16 A nd Jehovah raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those that despoiled them.

Entonces el Señor suscitó caudillos para que los libraran de aquellos que los despojaban.

17 A nd yet they hearkened not unto their judges; for they played the harlot after other gods, and bowed themselves down unto them: they turned aside quickly out of the way wherein their fathers walked, obeying the commandments of Jehovah; but they did not so.

Pero ellos tampoco escuchaban a sus caudillos, sino que se fueron tras dioses ajenos, a los cuales adoraron, y pronto se apartaron del camino que habían seguido sus antepasados, pues sus antepasados habían obedecido los mandamientos del Señor, pero ellos no lo hicieron así.

18 A nd when Jehovah raised them up judges, then Jehovah was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented Jehovah because of their groaning by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

Cuando el Señor suscitaba algún caudillo, también lo apoyaba y, mientras ese caudillo vivía, los libraba del poder de sus enemigos, pues el Señor se conmovía al escuchar los gemidos de su pueblo oprimido y afligido.

19 B ut it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their doings, nor from their stubborn way.

Pero al morir aquel caudillo, el pueblo volvía a corromperse aún más que sus antepasados, y seguía a los dioses ajenos para servirles y adorarlos; y no se arrepentían de sus obras, ni de su obstinada conducta.

20 A nd the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel; and he said, Because this nation have transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;

Por eso la ira del Señor se encendió contra Israel, y dijo: «Como este pueblo ha roto el pacto que establecí con sus antepasados, y no me obedece,

21 I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations that Joshua left when he died;

tampoco yo volveré a expulsar delante de ellos a ninguna de las naciones que Josué dejó al morir.»

22 t hat by them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of Jehovah to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.

Ésta era una prueba para Israel, para ver si se esforzaban en volver al camino del Señor, como sus antepasados.

23 S o Jehovah left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.

Por esta razón, el Señor no expulsó a aquellas naciones, ni se las entregó a Josué, sino que las dejó entre ellos.
