1 T hen Jehovah answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

El Señor le respondió a Job desde el torbellino:

2 W ho is this that darkeneth counsel By words without knowledge?

«¿Quién se atreve a oscurecer mis designios con palabras carentes de sentido?

3 G ird up now thy loins like a man; For I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

Pórtate como hombre, y prepárate; yo te voy a preguntar, y tú me vas a responder.

4 W here wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast understanding.

»¿Dónde estabas tú, cuando yo afirmé la tierra? Si en verdad sabes mucho, dímelo.

5 W ho determined the measures thereof, if thou knowest? Or who stretched the line upon it?

Dime también, si lo sabes, ¿quién tomó sus medidas? ¿O quién la midió palmo a palmo?

6 W hereupon were the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the corner-stone thereof,

¿Sobre qué están sentadas sus bases? ¿Quién puso su piedra angular

7 W hen the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

mientras cantaban las estrellas del alba y los seres celestiales se regocijaban?

8 O r who shut up the sea with doors, When it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb;

»Cuando las aguas del mar se desbordaban, ¿quién les puso compuertas para controlarlas?

9 W hen I made clouds the garment thereof, And thick darkness a swaddling-band for it,

Cuando yo cubrí el mar de nubes blancas, y lo envolví en una densa oscuridad,

10 A nd marked out for it my bound, And set bars and doors,

establecí para el mar este decreto que ponía límite a sus movimientos:

11 A nd said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further; And here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

“Podrás llegar hasta aquí, pero no más allá. Hasta aquí llegarán tus orgullosas olas.”

12 H ast thou commanded the morning since thy days began, And caused the dayspring to know its place;

»¿Alguna vez le has dado órdenes a la mañana? ¿Le has señalado al alba cuál es su lugar,

13 T hat it might take hold of the ends of the earth, And the wicked be shaken out of it?

para que tome los extremos de la tierra y se sacuda de encima a los malvados?

14 I t is changed as clay under the seal; And all things stand forth as a garment:

Con el alba, la tierra cambia de aspecto y se reviste con tonos de lacre para sello;

15 A nd from the wicked their light is withholden, And the high arm is broken.

pero si se les quita su luz a los malvados, éstos pierden su fuerza y son vencidos.

16 H ast thou entered into the springs of the sea? Or hast thou walked in the recesses of the deep?

»¿Has bajado alguna vez al fondo del mar? ¿Has recorrido los senderos del abismo?

17 H ave the gates of death been revealed unto thee? Or hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?

¿Se te han revelado las puertas de la muerte? ¿Has visto el umbral del reino de las sombras?

18 H ast thou comprehended the earth in its breadth? Declare, if thou knowest it all.

¿Has calculado la extensión de la tierra? ¡Hazme saber si sabes todo esto!

19 W here is the way to the dwelling of light? And as for darkness, where is the place thereof,

»¿Sabes cómo llegar a la casa de la luz? ¿O en qué lugar se resguardan las tinieblas?

20 T hat thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, And that thou shouldest discern the paths to the house thereof?

¡Entonces puedes guiarlas hasta sus fronteras y mostrarles la senda que conduce a su casa!

21 D oubtless, thou knowest, for thou wast then born, And the number of thy days is great!

¡Claro que lo sabes, pues ya habías nacido! ¡Son muchos los años que has vivido!

22 H ast thou entered the treasuries of the snow, Or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,

»¿Has entrado en los depósitos de la nieve? ¿Has visto dónde está almacenado el granizo?

23 W hich I have reserved against the time of trouble, Against the day of battle and war?

Yo los guardo para momentos angustiosos, para los días de combate y de batalla.

24 B y what way is the light parted, Or the east wind scattered upon the earth?

¿De qué manera se difunde la luz? ¿Cómo se esparce el viento solano sobre la tierra?

25 W ho hath cleft a channel for the waterflood, Or the way for the lightning of the thunder;

»¿Quién le abrió el camino al aluvión, y con él a los truenos y relámpagos

26 T o cause it to rain on a land where no man is; On the wilderness, wherein there is no man;

que descargan su furia en los páramos y en desiertos que nadie habita?

27 T o satisfy the waste and desolate ground, And to cause the tender grass to spring forth?

Con la lluvia sacia su sed el desierto, y brota en el desierto la tierna hierba.

28 H ath the rain a father? Or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

»¿Quién es el padre de la lluvia? ¿Quién da origen a las gotas de rocío?

29 O ut of whose womb came the ice? And the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?

¿Del vientre de qué madre sale el hielo? ¿Quién da origen a la escarcha?

30 T he waters hide themselves and become like stone, And the face of the deep is frozen.

¿Cómo es que el agua se endurece como piedra, y la superficie del mar profundo se congela?

31 C anst thou bind the cluster of the Pleiades, Or loose the bands of Orion?

»¿Puedes atar los lazos de las Pléyades, o desatar las ataduras de Orión?

32 C anst thou lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season? Or canst thou guide the Bear with her train?

¿Puedes sacar las constelaciones a su tiempo, o guiar a la Osa Mayor y a sus cachorros?

33 K nowest thou the ordinances of the heavens? Canst thou establish the dominion thereof in the earth?

¿Conoces acaso las leyes de los cielos? ¿Puedes controlar su potestad en la tierra?

34 C anst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, That abundance of waters may cover thee?

»¿Puedes dar órdenes a las nubes, y hacer que te cubra un torrente de lluvia?

35 C anst thou send forth lightnings, that they may go, And say unto thee, Here we are?

¿Puedes marcar la ruta de los relámpagos, y hacer que ellos se pongan a tus órdenes?

36 W ho hath put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who hath given understanding to the mind?

»¿Quién le dio sabiduría al ibis? ¿Quién le dio inteligencia al gallo?

37 W ho can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven,

¿Quién con tanta sabiduría cuenta las nubes? ¿Y quién derrama las aguas de los cielos

38 W hen the dust runneth into a mass, And the clods cleave fast together?

para reblandecer los duros terrones cuando éstos se pegan por falta de humedad?

39 C anst thou hunt the prey for the lioness, Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

»¿Te atreverías a cazar la presa para el león? ¿Te atreverías a saciar el hambre de sus cachorros,

40 W hen they couch in their dens, And abide in the covert to lie in wait?

que tendidos en sus cuevas esperan impacientes la hora de comer?

41 W ho provideth for the raven his prey, When his young ones cry unto God, And wander for lack of food?

¿Quién alimenta al cuervo y sus polluelos, cuando éstos saltan de un lado a otro y graznan hambrientos pidiendo a Dios su comida?
