1 T hen Jehovah answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

Allora l'Eterno rispose a Giobbe di mezzo alla tempesta e disse:

2 W ho is this that darkeneth counsel By words without knowledge?

«Chi è costui che oscura il mio disegno con parole prive di conoscenza?

3 G ird up now thy loins like a man; For I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

Orsú, cingiti i lombi, come un prode; io ti interrogherò e tu mi risponderai.

4 W here wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast understanding.

Dov'eri tu quando io gettavo le fondamenta della terra? Dillo, se hai tanta intelligenza.

5 W ho determined the measures thereof, if thou knowest? Or who stretched the line upon it?

Chi ha stabilito le sue dimensioni, se lo sai, o chi tracciò su di essa la corda per misurarla?

6 W hereupon were the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the corner-stone thereof,

Dove sono fissate le sue fondamenta, o chi pose la sua pietra angolare,

7 W hen the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

quando le stelle del mattino cantavano tutte insieme e tutti i figli di DIO mandavano grida di gioia?

8 O r who shut up the sea with doors, When it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb;

Chi racchiuse con porte il mare quando proruppe uscendo dal grembo materno,

9 W hen I made clouds the garment thereof, And thick darkness a swaddling-band for it,

quando gli diedi le nubi per vestito e per fasce l'oscurità?

10 A nd marked out for it my bound, And set bars and doors,

Quando gli tracciai un limite e gli misi sbarre e porte,

11 A nd said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further; And here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

e dissi: "Tu arriverai fin qui, ma non oltre; qui si arresteranno le tue onde superbe!

12 H ast thou commanded the morning since thy days began, And caused the dayspring to know its place;

Da quando vivi hai mai comandato al mattino o insegnato all'aurora il suo posto,

13 T hat it might take hold of the ends of the earth, And the wicked be shaken out of it?

perché essa afferri le estremità della terra e ne scuota via i malvagi

14 I t is changed as clay under the seal; And all things stand forth as a garment:

Si trasforma come creta sotto il sigillo, e spicca come un vestito.

15 A nd from the wicked their light is withholden, And the high arm is broken.

Ai malvagi è negata la loro luce, e il braccio alzato è spezzato.

16 H ast thou entered into the springs of the sea? Or hast thou walked in the recesses of the deep?

Sei forse giunto fino alle sorgenti del mare o sei mai andato in cerca delle profondità dell'abisso?

17 H ave the gates of death been revealed unto thee? Or hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?

Ti sono state mostrate le porte della morte, o hai forse visto le porte dell'ombra di morte?

18 H ast thou comprehended the earth in its breadth? Declare, if thou knowest it all.

Hai tu fatto caso all'ampiezza della terra? Dillo, se sai tutto questo!

19 W here is the way to the dwelling of light? And as for darkness, where is the place thereof,

Dov'è la via che guida alla dimora della luce? E le tenebre, dov'è il loro luogo.

20 T hat thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, And that thou shouldest discern the paths to the house thereof?

perché tu le possa condurre al loro posto, e possa conoscere i sentieri che portano alla loro casa?

21 D oubtless, thou knowest, for thou wast then born, And the number of thy days is great!

Tu lo sai, perché allora eri già nato, e il numero dei tuoi giorni è grande.

22 H ast thou entered the treasuries of the snow, Or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,

Sei mai entrato nei depositi della neve, o hai forse visto i depositi della grandine

23 W hich I have reserved against the time of trouble, Against the day of battle and war?

che io tengo in serbo per i tempi di calamità, per il giorno della battaglia e della guerra?

24 B y what way is the light parted, Or the east wind scattered upon the earth?

Per quali vie si diffonde la luce o propaga il vento orientale sulla terra

25 W ho hath cleft a channel for the waterflood, Or the way for the lightning of the thunder;

Chi ha aperto un canale per le straripanti acque e la via al tuono dei fulmini.

26 T o cause it to rain on a land where no man is; On the wilderness, wherein there is no man;

per far piovere su una terra disabitata, su un deserto, dove non c'è alcun uomo,

27 T o satisfy the waste and desolate ground, And to cause the tender grass to spring forth?

per dissetare le solitudini desolate, e far germogliare e crescere l'erba?

28 H ath the rain a father? Or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

La pioggia ha forse un padre? O chi genera le gocce della rugiada?

29 O ut of whose womb came the ice? And the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?

Dal grembo di chi esce il ghiaccio, e la brina del cielo chi la dà alla luce?

30 T he waters hide themselves and become like stone, And the face of the deep is frozen.

Le acque si induriscono come pietra e la superficie dell'abisso si congela.

31 C anst thou bind the cluster of the Pleiades, Or loose the bands of Orion?

Puoi tu unire assieme i legami delle Pleiadi, o sciogliere le catene di Orione?

32 C anst thou lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season? Or canst thou guide the Bear with her train?

Fai tu apparire le costellazioni a suo tempo, o guidare l'Orsa maggiore con i suoi piccoli?

33 K nowest thou the ordinances of the heavens? Canst thou establish the dominion thereof in the earth?

Conosci tu le leggi del cielo, o puoi tu stabilire il loro dominio sulla terra?

34 C anst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, That abundance of waters may cover thee?

Puoi tu far giungere la tua voce fino alle nubi affinché abbondanza di pioggia ti ricopra?

35 C anst thou send forth lightnings, that they may go, And say unto thee, Here we are?

Sei tu forse che scagli i fulmini dove devono andare, dicendoti: "Eccoci"?

36 W ho hath put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who hath given understanding to the mind?

Chi ha messo nella mente la sapienza o chi ha dato intendimento al cuore?

37 W ho can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven,

Chi conta le nubi per mezzo della sapienza, e chi versa gli otri del cielo

38 W hen the dust runneth into a mass, And the clods cleave fast together?

quando la polvere si fonde in una massa e le zolle si attaccano insieme?

39 C anst thou hunt the prey for the lioness, Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

Puoi tu cacciare la preda per la leonessa o saziare la fame dei leoncelli

40 W hen they couch in their dens, And abide in the covert to lie in wait?

quando si accovacciano nelle loro tane o stanno in agguato nei loro nascondigli?

41 W ho provideth for the raven his prey, When his young ones cry unto God, And wander for lack of food?

Chi provvede al corvo il suo cibo, quando i suoi piccini gridano a Dio e vanno errando senza cibo?
