1 I n those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith Jehovah, Set thy house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.

In quel tempo Ezechia si ammalò mortalmente. Il profeta Isaia, figlio di Amots, si recò da lui e gli disse: «Cosí parla l'Eterno: Metti in ordine la tua casa, perché morirai e non guarirai».

2 T hen Hezekiah turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto Jehovah,

Ezechia allora voltò la faccia verso la parete e pregò l'Eterno:

3 a nd said, Remember now, O Jehovah, I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore.

«Ti supplico, o Eterno, ricordati come ho camminato davanti a te con fedeltà e con cuore integro e ho fatto ciò che è bene ai tuoi occhi». Poi Ezechia diede in un gran pianto.

4 T hen came the word of Jehovah to Isaiah, saying,

Allora la parola dell'Eterno fu rivolta a Isaia, dicendo:

5 G o, and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years.

«Va' e di' a Ezechia: Cosí dice l'Eterno, il DIO di Davide, tuo padre: Ho udito la tua preghiera, ho visto le tue lacrime; ecco, io aggiungerò ai tuoi giorni quindici anni;

6 A nd I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city.

libererò te e questa città dalle mani del re di Assiria e proteggerò questa città.

7 A nd this shall be the sign unto thee from Jehovah, that Jehovah will do this thing that he hath spoken:

Questo è per te il segno da parte dell'Eterno, che l'Eterno adempirà la parola che ha detto:

8 b ehold, I will cause the shadow on the steps, which is gone down on the dial of Ahaz with the sun, to return backward ten steps. So the sun returned ten steps on the dial whereon it was gone down.

ecco, io farò retrocedere di dieci gradini l'ombra che per effetto del sole si è allungata sui gradini di Achaz». E il sole retrocesse di dieci gradini sui gradini dai quali era disceso.

9 T he writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, when he had been sick, and was recovered of his sickness.

Scritto di Ezechia, re di Giuda, quando cadde ammalato e guarí dalla sua malattia.

10 I said, In the noontide of my days I shall go into the gates of Sheol: I am deprived of the residue of my years.

Io dicevo: «Al culmine dei miei giorni me ne andrò alle porte dello Sceol; sono privato del resto dei miei anni».

11 I said, I shall not see Jehovah, even Jehovah in the land of the living: I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world.

Dicevo: «Non vedrò piú l'Eterno, sí, l'Eterno, sulla terra dei viventi; fra gli abitanti del mondo dei trapassati non vedrò piú alcun uomo.

12 M y dwelling is removed, and is carried away from me as a shepherd's tent: I have rolled up, like a weaver, my life; he will cut me off from the loom: From day even to night wilt thou make an end of me.

La mia dimora terrena è divelta e portata via lontano da me, come una tenda di pastori. Ho arrotolato la mia vita come un tessitore. Egli mi recide dalla trama; dal giorno alla notte porrai termine alla mia vita.

13 I quieted myself until morning; as a lion, so he breaketh all my bones: From day even to night wilt thou make an end of me.

Ho calmato me stesso fino al mattino; come un leone, cosí egli spezza tutte le mie ossa; dal giorno alla notte porrai termine alla mia vita.

14 L ike a swallow or a crane, so did I chatter; I did moan as a dove; mine eyes fail with looking upward: O Lord, I am oppressed, be thou my surety.

Stridevo come una gru o una rondine, gemevo come una colomba, i miei occhi erano stanchi di guardare in alto. O Eterno, sono oppresso; sii tu il mio garante.

15 W hat shall I say? he hath both spoken unto me, and himself hath done it: I shall go softly all my years because of the bitterness of my soul.

Che dirò? Egli mi ha parlato ed egli stesso ha fatto questo. Io camminerò lentamente durante tutti i miei anni, nell'amarezza della mia anima.

16 O Lord, by these things men live; And wholly therein is the life of my spirit: Wherefore recover thou me, and make me to live.

O Signore, mediante queste cose si vive, e in tutte queste cose sta la vita del mio spirito; perciò guariscimi e rendimi la vita!

17 B ehold, it was for my peace that I had great bitterness: But thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption; For thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.

Ecco, è per la mia pace che ho provato grande amarezza, ma nel tuo amore hai liberato la mia anima dalla fossa della corruzione, perché hai gettato dietro le tue spalle tutti i miei peccati.

18 F or Sheol cannot praise thee, death cannot celebrate thee: They that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth.

Poiché lo Sceol non può lodarti, la morte non può celebrarti, quelli che scendono nella fossa non possono piú sperare nella tua fedeltà.

19 T he living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day: The father to the children shall make known thy truth.

Il vivente, il vivente è quello che ti loda, come faccio io quest'oggi, il padre farà conoscere ai figli la tua fedeltà.

20 J ehovah is ready to save me: Therefore we will sing my songs with stringed instruments All the days of our life in the house of Jehovah.

L'Eterno mi salverà, e noi canteremo i miei cantici con gli strumenti a corda, tutti i giorni della nostra vita nella casa dell'Eterno».

21 N ow Isaiah had said, Let them take a cake of figs, and lay it for a plaster upon the boil, and he shall recover.

Or Isaia aveva detto: «Si prenda un impiastro di fichi, lo si applichi sull'ulcera ed egli guarirà».

22 H ezekiah also had said, What is the sign that I shall go up to the house of Jehovah?

Ezechia aveva detto: «Qual è il segno per cui salirò alla casa dell'Eterno?».
