1 W hat advantage then hath the Jew? or what is the profit of circumcision?

Qual è dunque il vantaggio del Giudeo, o qual è l'utilità della circoncisione?

2 M uch every way: first of all, that they were intrusted with the oracles of God.

Grande in ogni maniera; prima di tutto perché gli oracoli di Dio furono affidati a loro.

3 F or what if some were without faith? shall their want of faith make of none effect the faithfulness of God?

Che dire allora? Se alcuni sono stati increduli, la loro incredulità annullerà forse la fedeltà di Dio?

4 G od forbid: yea, let God be found true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy words, And mightest prevail when thou comest into judgment.

Non sia mai; anzi, sia Dio verace e ogni uomo bugiardo, come sta scritto: «Affinché tu sia giustificato nelle tue parole e vinca quando sei giudicato».

5 B ut if our righteousness commendeth the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who visiteth with wrath? (I speak after the manner of men.)

Ora se la nostra ingiustizia fa risaltare la giustizia di Dio, che diremo? Dio è ingiusto quando dà corso alla sua ira? (Io parlo da uomo).

6 G od forbid: for then how shall God judge the world?

Niente affatto! Altrimenti, come giudicherebbe Dio il mondo?

7 B ut if the truth of God through my lie abounded unto his glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner?

Per cui se la verità di Dio per la mia menzogna è sovrabbondata alla sua gloria, perché sono io ancora giudicato un peccatore?

8 a nd why not (as we are slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say), Let us do evil, that good may come? whose condemnation is just.

E perché non dire come alcuni calunniandoci affermano che noi diciamo «Facciamo il male affinché ne venga il bene» La condanna di costoro è giusta.

9 W hat then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we before laid to the charge both of Jews and Greeks, that they are all under sin;

Che dunque? Abbiamo noi qualche superiorità? Niente affatto! Abbiamo infatti dimostrato precedentemente che tanto Giudei che Greci sono tutti sotto peccato,

10 a s it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one;

come sta scritto: «Non c'è alcun giusto, neppure uno.

11 T here is none that understandeth, There is none that seeketh after God;

Non c'è alcuno che abbia intendimento, non c'è alcuno che ricerchi Dio.

12 T hey have all turned aside, they are together become unprofitable; There is none that doeth good, no, not, so much as one:

Tutti si sono sviati, tutti quanti sono divenuti inutili; non c'è alcuno che faccia il bene, neppure uno.

13 T heir throat is an open sepulchre; With their tongues they have used deceit: The poison of asps is under their lips:

La loro gola è un sepolcro aperto con le loro lingue hanno tramato inganni, c'è un veleno di aspidi sotto le loro labbra;

14 W hose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:

la loro bocca è piena di maledizione e di amarezza;

15 T heir feet are swift to shed blood;

i loro piedi sono veloci per spandere il sangue;

16 D estruction and misery are in their ways;

sulle loro vie c'è rovina e calamità,

17 A nd the way of peace have they not known:

e non hanno conosciuto la via della pace;

18 T here is no fear of God before their eyes.

non c'è il timore di Dio davanti ai loro occhi».

19 N ow we know that what things soever the law saith, it speaketh to them that are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God:

Or noi sappiamo che tutto quello che la legge dice, lo dice per coloro che sono sotto la legge, affinché ogni bocca sia messa a tacere e tutto il mondo sia sottoposto al giudizio di Dio,

20 b ecause by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified in his sight; for through the law cometh the knowledge of sin.

perché nessuna carne sarà giustificata davanti a lui per le opere della legge; mediante la legge infatti vi è la conoscenza del peccato.

21 B ut now apart from the law a righteousness of God hath been manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

Ma ora, indipendentemente dalla legge, è stata manifestata la giustizia di Dio, alla quale rendono testimonianza la legge e i profeti,

22 e ven the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ unto all them that believe; for there is no distinction;

cioè la giustizia di Dio mediante la fede in Gesú Cristo verso tutti e sopra tutti coloro che credono, perché non c'è distinzione;

23 f or all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;

poiché tutti hanno peccato e sono privi della gloria di Dio,

24 b eing justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

ma sono gratuitamente giustificati per la sua grazia, mediante la redenzione che è in Cristo Gesú.

25 w hom God set forth to be a propitiation, through faith, in his blood, to show his righteousness because of the passing over of the sins done aforetime, in the forbearance of God;

Lui ha Dio preordinato per far l'espiazione mediante la fede nel suo sangue, per dimostrare cosí la sua giustizia per il perdono dei peccati, che sono stati precedentemente commessi durante il tempo della pazienza di Dio,

26 f or the showing, I say, of his righteousness at this present season: that he might himself be just, and the justifier of him that hath faith in Jesus.

per manifestare la sua giustizia nel tempo presente, affinché egli sia giusto e giustificatore di colui che ha la fede di Gesú.

27 W here then is the glorying? It is excluded. By what manner of law? of works? Nay: but by a law of faith.

Dov'è dunque il vanto? E' escluso. Per quale legge? Quella delle opere? No, ma per la legge della fede.

28 W e reckon therefore that a man is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

Noi dunque riteniamo che l'uomo è giustificato mediante la fede senza le opere della legge.

29 O r is God the God of Jews only? is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yea, of Gentiles also:

Dio è forse soltanto il Dio dei Giudei? Non lo è anche dei gentili? Certo, è anche il Dio dei gentili.

30 i f so be that God is one, and he shall justify the circumcision by faith, and the uncircumcision through faith.

Poiché vi è un solo Dio, che giustificherà il circonciso per fede e anche l'incirconciso mediante la fede.

31 D o we then make the law of none effect through faith? God forbid: nay, we establish the law.

Annulliamo noi dunque la legge mediante la fede? Cosí non sia, anzi stabiliamo la legge.
