1 A good name is better than precious oil; and the day of death, than the day of one's birth.

Un buon nome è preferibile a un olio profumato, e il giorno della morte meglio del giorno della nascita.

2 I t is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

E' meglio andare in una casa dove c'è lutto, che andare in una casa dove si fa festa, perché quella è la fine di ogni uomo, e chi vive vi porrà mente.

3 S orrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made glad.

La tristezza è preferibile al riso, perché davanti a un volto triste, il cuore diventa migliore.

4 T he heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

Il cuore del saggio è in una casa di lutto, ma il cuore degli stolti è in una casa di allegria.

5 I t is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.

E' meglio per qualcuno ascoltare la riprensione del saggio che ascoltare il canto degli stolti

6 F or as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.

perché com'è il crepitìo dei pruni sotto una pentola, cosí è il riso dello stolto. Anche questo è vanità.

7 S urely extortion maketh the wise man foolish; and a bribe destroyeth the understanding.

Certo l'oppressione rende insensato il saggio, e il regalo fa perdere il senno.

8 B etter is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof; and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

Meglio la fine di una cosa che il suo inizio, e meglio il paziente di spirito che il superbo di spirito.

9 B e not hasty in thy spirit to be angry; for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

Non affrettarti nel tuo spirito ad adirarti, perché l'ira alberga nel seno degli stolti.

10 S ay not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not inquire wisely concerning this.

Non dire: «Come mai i giorni passati erano migliori di questi?», perché non è saggio fare una tale domanda.

11 W isdom is as good as an inheritance; yea, more excellent is it for them that see the sun.

La sapienza è buona assieme a un patrimonio ed è vantaggiosa per quelli che vedono il sole.

12 F or wisdom is a defence, even as money is a defence; but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom preserveth the life of him that hath it.

Poiché la sapienza è un riparo come lo è il denaro; ma l'eccellenza della conoscenza sta in questo: la sapienza fa vivere quelli che la possiedono.

13 C onsider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?

Considera l'opera di DIO: chi può raddrizzare ciò che egli ha fatto storto?

14 I n the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider; yea, God hath made the one side by side with the other, to the end that man should not find out anything that shall be after him.

Nel giorno della prosperità sii allegro, ma nel giorno dell'avversità rifletti. DIO ha fatto tanto l'uno che l'altro, perché l'uomo non scopra nulla di ciò che accadrà dopo di lui.

15 A ll this have I seen in my days of vanity: there is a righteous man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his evil-doing.

Ho visto di tutto nei giorni della mia vanità. C'è il giusto che perisce nella sua giustizia e c'è l'empio che vive a lungo nella sua malvagità.

16 B e not righteous overmuch; neither make thyself overwise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?

Non essere troppo giusto né eccessivamente saggio. Perché vorresti distruggerti?

17 B e not overmuch wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

Non essere troppo malvagio e non essere stolto. Perché vuoi morire prima del tuo tempo?

18 I t is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from that withdraw not thy hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth from them all.

E' bene che tu stia aggrappato a questo e che non ritragga la mano da quello, perché chi teme DIO eviterà tutte queste cose.

19 W isdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers that are in a city.

La sapienza rende il saggio piú forte di dieci potenti in una città.

20 S urely there is not a righteous man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

Non c'è infatti alcun uomo giusto sulla terra, che faccia il bene e non pecchi.

21 A lso take not heed unto all words that are spoken, lest thou hear thy servant curse thee;

Inoltre non fare attenzione a tutte le parole che si dicono, per non sentirti maledire dal tuo servo

22 f or oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

perché anche il tuo cuore sa che tu stesso hai molte volte maledetto altri.

23 A ll this have I proved in wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.

Io ho esaminato tutto questo con sapienza. Ho detto: «Diventerò saggio»; ma la sapienza è ben lontana da me.

24 T hat which is, is far off and exceeding deep; who can find it out?

Una cosa che è tanto lontana e tanto profonda, chi la può trovare?

25 I turned about, and my heart was set to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the reason of things, and to know that wickedness is folly, and that foolishness is madness.

Allora ho applicato il mio cuore per conoscere, per investigare e per ricercare la sapienza e la ragione delle cose e per conoscere la malvagità della follia e la stoltezza della pazzia;

26 A nd I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and whose hands are bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

e ho trovato una cosa piú amara della morte: la donna il cui cuore è lacci e reti, e le cui mani sono catene. Chi è gradito a DIO le sfugge, ma il peccatore sarà preso da lei.

27 B ehold, this have I found, saith the Preacher, laying one thing to another, to find out the account;

Ecco ciò che ho trovato», dice il Predicatore, «esaminando le cose una ad una, per trovare la ragione.

28 w hich my soul still seeketh, but I have not found: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.

Ciò che io cerco ancora, ma non ho trovato: un uomo fra mille lo trovato ma una donna fra tutte queste non l'ho trovata.

29 B ehold, this only have I found: that God made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.

Ecco, solo questo ho trovato: DIO ha fatto l'uomo retto, ma gli uomini hanno ricercato molti artifici.
