1 M y son, if thou art become surety for thy neighbor, If thou hast stricken thy hands for a stranger;

2 T hou art snared with the words of thy mouth, Thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.

3 D o this now, my son, and deliver thyself, Seeing thou art come into the hand of thy neighbor: Go, humble thyself, and importune thy neighbor;

Fa' questo dunque, figlio mio, e disimpegnati, perché sei caduto in mano del tuo vicino. Va' gettati ai suoi piedi e insisti con forza il tuo vicino.

4 G ive not sleep to thine eyes, Nor slumber to thine eyelids;

Non dar sonno ai tuoi occhi né riposo alle tue palpebre;

5 D eliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, And as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

disimpegnati come la gazzella dalla mano del cacciatore, come l'uccello dalla mano dell'uccellatore.

6 G o to the ant, thou sluggard; Consider her ways, and be wise:

Va' dalla formica, o pigro, considera le sue abitudini e diventa saggio.

7 W hich having no chief, Overseer, or ruler,

Essa non ha né capo né sorvegliante né padrone;

8 P rovideth her bread in the summer, And gathereth her food in the harvest.

si procura il cibo nell'estate e raduna le sue provviste durante la mietitura.

9 H ow long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

Fino a quando, o pigro, rimarrai a dormire? Quando ti scuoterai dal tuo sonno?

10 Y et a little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep:

Dormire un po' sonnecchiare un po' incrociare un po' le braccia per riposare,

11 S o shall thy poverty come as a robber, And thy want as an armed man.

cosí la tua povertà verrà come un ladro, e la tua indigenza come un uomo armato.

12 A worthless person, a man of iniquity, Is he that walketh with a perverse mouth;

La persona da nulla, l'uomo malvagio, cammina con una bocca perversa;

13 T hat winketh with his eyes, that speaketh with his feet, That maketh signs with his fingers;

ammicca con gli occhi, parla con i piedi fa cenni con le dita;

14 I n whose heart is perverseness, Who deviseth evil continually, Who soweth discord.

ha la perversità nel cuore, macchina del male continuamente, e semina discordie.

15 T herefore shall his calamity come suddenly; On a sudden shall he be broken, and that without remedy.

Perciò la sua rovina verrà improvvisamente, in un attimo sarà distrutto senza rimedio.

16 T here are six things which Jehovah hateth; Yea, seven which are an abomination unto him:

L'Eterno odia queste sei cose, anzi sette sono per lui un abominio:

17 H aughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood;

gli occhi alteri, la lingua bugiarda, le mani che versano sangue innocente,

18 A heart that deviseth wicked purposes, Feet that are swift in running to mischief,

il cuore che escogita progetti malvagi, i piedi che sono veloci nel correre al male,

19 A false witness that uttereth lies, And he that soweth discord among brethren.

il falso testimone che proferisce menzogne e chi semina discordie tra fratelli.

20 M y son, keep the commandment of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother:

Figlio mio, custodisci il comandamento di tuo padre e non dimenticare l'insegnamento di tua madre.

21 B ind them continually upon thy heart; Tie them about thy neck.

Tienili del continuo legati sul tuo cuore e fissali intorno al tuo collo.

22 W hen thou walkest, it shall lead thee; When thou sleepest, it shall watch over thee; And when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.

Quando camminerai, ti guideranno; quando riposerai, veglieranno su di te; quando ti risveglierai, parleranno con te.

23 F or the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; And reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

Poiché il comandamento è una lampada, l'insegnamento una luce, e le correzioni dell'ammaestramento sono la via della vita,

24 T o keep thee from the evil woman, From the flattery of the foreigner's tongue.

25 L ust not after her beauty in thy heart; Neither let her take thee with her eyelids.

Non desiderare in cuor tuo la sua bellezza e non lasciarti avvincere dalle sue palpebre.

26 F or on account of a harlot a man is brought to a piece of bread; And the adulteress hunteth for the precious life.

Poiché per una prostituta uno si riduce a un tozzo di pane, e la moglie di un altro dà la caccia all'anima preziosa di un uomo.

27 C an a man take fire in his bosom, And his clothes not be burned?

Può un uomo portare fuoco nel suo seno senza bruciarsi gli abiti?

28 O r can one walk upon hot coals, And his feet not be scorched?

0 può un uomo camminare su carboni accesi senza bruciarsi i piedi?

29 S o he that goeth in to his neighbor's wife; Whosoever toucheth her shall not be unpunished.

Cosí è di chi va dalla moglie di un altro; chi la tocca non rimarrà impunito.

30 M en do not despise a thief, if he steal To satisfy himself when he is hungry:

Non si disprezza il ladro se ruba per soddisfare l'appetito quando ha fame;

31 B ut if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; He shall give all the substance of his house.

ma se viene colto in fallo, dovrà restituire sette volte, e dare tutti i beni della sua casa.

32 H e that committeth adultery with a woman is void of understanding: He doeth it who would destroy his own soul.

Ma chi commette adulterio con una donna è privo di senno; chi fa questo distrugge la sua stessa vita.

33 W ounds and dishonor shall he get; And his reproach shall not be wiped away.

Troverà ferite e disprezzo, e la sua vergogna non sarà mai cancellata,

34 F or jealousy is the rage of a man; And he will not spare in the day of vengeance.

perché la gelosia rende furioso il marito, che sarà senza pietà nel giorno della vendetta.

35 H e will not regard any ransom; Neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.

Egli non accetterà alcun riscatto e non sarà soddisfatto, anche se dovesse fare molti regali.
